Nick Winter Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 (edited) Well I've been chomping at the bit to build another dio, and the other day I glued together and painted some Tamiya Mechanics I got in a trade from Rodney (Zukaholic), well with mechanics I had to build a garage. I lucked out and helped my cousin Jeff clean out his home shop, He's a contractor, so We found all kinds of tools and scraps of wood, most of which followed me home the peice I used was the lest warped/bowed/cuped, they all had quite the curve to them this was the best, the walls consist of 1/8th" paneling, the outside light is just a single christmas bulb, running off a 9 volt battery and a 6 volt switch. it's not perfect, but where getting there, still needs a lot of finishing work and it's only in rough right now. I'm an Imperial guy, hense the old inches markings and such. Edit: changed the name of the shop. Edited August 18, 2011 by Nick Winter
Nick Winter Posted January 11, 2011 Author Posted January 11, 2011 my mechanics Fred Red Ed any imput would be great. Nick
Foxer Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 (edited) This seems pretty quick ... wired already! Looks promising. You should mention disposable gloves to the mechanics. There's another way to measure things besides inches?? Edited January 11, 2011 by Foxer
Jim B Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 I like your idea so far, and Red looks a little like G.I. Joe!
GTMust Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Looking good! Us older Canucks still think in inches.... If we drive in kilometers/hour, do we get there faster??
Nick Winter Posted January 11, 2011 Author Posted January 11, 2011 Thanks guys, still a lot of stuff to do, sanding edges, seems etc.
Dr. Cranky Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Can't wait to see more. Wow, and it's wired too. Cool.
dptydawg Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Hi Nick Your off to a great start on your dio. If you ever get to using metric you may find it a lot easier to scratch build. Just measure the real thing in inches then mark out your model the same number of millimetres. It gives you 1/25th scale. For example: A 36" X 80" door would scale out at 36 X 80 mm. Nice job on the figures. What type of paint did you use to get the dead flat finish? How did your mechanics manage to get grease on their arms but keep their shirts spotless? A little drybrushing of a lighter shade on the uniforms might add a little depth to the wrinkles. I sometimes comb my figures hair with a razor saw to bring up a bit more detail. Looking good so far. Thanks Carl

Thanks Carl I used cheapo dollar store craft paints, there water based acrylic, I bought them for interiors and painting tire lettering, but they always seem to have another use. They work like me, I can go all over a car and only get grease on my arms and hands, then again my last oil change left me wearing a bit more than most people, stupid drain plug, Like I said it's still a work in progress and I think I will do some dry brushing on them, thanks for the suggestion. Nick
SuperStockAndy Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Looks great Nick! When I was a bit younger and played farm, I wired a bunch of Christmas tree lights in my barn. I used an AC adapter, but my parents wouldn't let me keep it in there in case it caught on fire.

Well all my lights are wired properly and soldered then taped with vinyl electrical tape for that specific reason, considering this sits under neath my paint cabinet. Nick Edit: Something tells me that if it did catch fire there would be one heck of a boom. Edited January 11, 2011 by Nick Winter
dannyi Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 ....looking good Nick, look forward to seeing more of it......
charlie8575 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Nick will lead a charge of high school freshmen from across the Dominion to return her to His Majesty's measures! Seriously, I hope you do it, I'll even come north and help! And yes, Nick, when I work on my cars, I tend to keep my shirt clean(ish,) too. I've never figured out how that works. Oh well. I like it so far. I'll keep an eye on this one. Charlie Larkin

Eshaver Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Nick, try some Grey, Dark Tan and Black "Washes" to the skin tones of the mechanic's faces and to the trousers too. Ed Shaver

GTMust Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 (edited) Comin' together well, Nick! Keep up the good work..... Tony Edited August 19, 2011 by GTMust
MikeMc Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I think the mechanics are the tops. Well done sir. IMHO The floor is just not there for me...I think it might be the width of the planks? This scale is 1/2" = a foot. What width are you trying for?..Scale planks would be no wider than 10" to 12" max. I did a smaller overhang on my dio...what did you do the roof with?
charlie8575 Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Slow and steady wins the race in modeling. Except it's not a race, it's a journey. The building is coming out very nicely Nick. Keep working on it, and it'll come out nicely. Charlie Larkin
Tony T Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Looks good so far, Nick. The mechanics are great...where are they from? I need to 'hire' a few at my shop. No worries, I know your guys are loyal!

The Ted, Red and Fred were born at Tamiya general hospital, them and there sultry sister Veronica (she's new to my shop, gotta have a supermodel to go with super cars). As for loyalty, as long as I keep them in scale nudey mags and scale beer their happy. (Tamiya Figures and Interior accessories set to be exact) Nick Edited August 23, 2011 by Nick Winter
