moparmagiclives Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 (edited) I wife asked me a question the other night that I really havent thought to much about yet. " what are you going to do with these after you build them?" I've only got about 4 or 5 "finished" models right now, so for the most part they sit on a little shelf above my bench. But I see some guys on here who crank out cars 5 to 10 a year it seens like, and really nice stuff that would be a waste and shame to disasemble for something else or discard all together. So what does everyone do with the models that they finish. I did a search and didnt come up with a topic like this, so I hope its not something thats been done to death on here already. Nick Winter Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 For me I have shelfs on two walls in my shop, not full walls, but enough to display what I have. Nick
Wagoneer81 Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Everything I built went on display in my home. Large scale ships got their own wall, cars were grouped together on shelves as was the armor and what few planes I had. I'm working on a couple of shadow-box style bookshelf dioramas for displaying cars and 1/35 scale armor. I build to display and collect. I may not be able to have the real thing, but I can have a nice scale replica. Right now, some are in storage because my housing and living conditions changed back in July but, when I'm in my own place again, I plan on turning my livingroom in to a miniature museum. Right now, I have a couple dozen models on display in my bedroom at my temporary digs. That's basically it.
diymirage Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 quite often i give them away a select few are on display in the living room, right now: the chicken of the sea on top of the aquarium, the twin turbo 69 camaro and the grand prix lowrider in my avatar on the shelf intended for dvds in the entertainment center then there are a few more elected ones downstairs in the guestroom, a hemi cuda, a 74 GTX and a 53 F100 with trailer the rest are on shelves in my modeling room/gym
crazyjim Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 I have 2 Carney Plastics cases almost full (each holds 21 builds) and another on order as a birthday present from my wife. In my shop I have a 48" x 24" garage dio with parking lot and an old stereo cabinet for displays. After some time has passed I trade off my older builds through the trade portion of this forum. Take a look at my 2 for 1 trade going on right now. There's only a couple of builds left - red '64 Chevy, gold '64 GTO, purple '55 Chevy, purple '69 Chevelle. I'm trying to work trades on the red '65 Dodge, grey GTX, Buick Grand National, and the black Cougar but there's nothing definite yet in case you're interested.
ra7c7er Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 You can build or buy a nice display case or stack them in cases I have seen people make entire walls of model cars stacked in cases. I am building a diorama for some of them and then others will be displayed. Very very few might make it to my nephew who will promptly destroy them and then the cats will probably get one or two also.
Nova-ss Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 For me it depends on the model and how I feel about it.sometime I trade them off after a couple of shows or years and others I've had for years...I mean years,I guess theere my favorites.I've sold alot to people at shows that want them.I've giving some aways as gifts.I know people that collect them for there homes, offices.and some are in museums here.so far that is what I've done. Thanks,Chris
Danno Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 One corner of my "retreat." It's presently being rearranged, updated, and improved; I'll re-shoot it when finished.
Eshaver Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Right now , I'm preparing to do a little touring in the comming year with "My Neighborhood" , uh service station dioramas in 2011. Ed Shaver
RodneyBad Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 I Don't know, When I finish too many, I'll let ya know It's not so much of what I finish, it is How many I can start. But I do have a Hobby room + Over-flow room and shed.
Terror Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 For room I display some, then rotate them back to the original box if they fit.
ROB213 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 well i just got back into models after a year and a half. but after i was done building them i would put them on ebay and sell them off. i have to many kids running around here and id rather give them to someone who would take care of them and appreciate them. i have about 2-3 dozen spreded out over the U.S. and a few over the pond. to me that brings me more joy knowing that my work is in other states and around the world and displayed in someones collection then just gathering dust at my house
cruz Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 After showng them around at different shows, I usually sell them afterwards, later, like a dumbass, I will regret it....
Guest Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 My wife has graciously let me have 2 shelves in the curio and 2 in the entertain ment center, plus I have a bookshelf in my hobby room, I rotate my builds amongst the spaces.
Chillyb1 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 I ran into this problem too when I started building again about five or six years ago. I gave some away as gifts then started selling them on eBay. And I've been selling them ever since shortly after I complete a build. These sales provide funds for further kit and supply purchases. And one of my models made its way to the GSL show and took second place! Hurray for me even though I was not the person who entered the model.

And one of my models made its way to the GSL show and took second place! Hurray for me even though I was not the person who entered the model. That's disgusting! It is dishonest and unethical for the purchaser to enter your model as his/her own build. Like most reputable contests, GSL rules prohibit entry of any model that was not the sole work/creation of the entrant. From the GSL Rules: "Section B. Model Eligibility, Classification and Presentation. To better understand the rules of the GSL International Scale Vehicle Championship and to make sure that your entry(ies) will meet the qualifications for competition, please carefully review these eligibility and classification rules: 1. Model Eligibility/Individual Craftsmanship. The GSL Championship rewards and encourages individual craftsmanship and creativity. GSL rewards individual effort, not partnership, committee or "contract" construction of entries (except as noted in the BOXPLUS Class regarding models prepainted by the manufacturer). To be eligible for competition, each model must be constructed exclusively by the entrant. No one other than the builderentrant may: i) install any upholstery, materials or kits, ii) apply any finish/paint job/graphics design work (aftermarketpainted kits are not permitted in competition under any circumstances, and manufacturerpainted kits are eligible only for BoxPlus Class); iii) install any component preassembled by anyone other than the builder/entrant (such as a prewired distributor), or iv) do any assembly tasks." While you cannot help what someone does with a model bought from you, the purchaser dishonestly stole that 2nd place award from a deserving entrant. And, it is this kind of subversion of rules that can impune the integrity and jeopardize the reputation of a revered competition such as GSL. The purchaser should be ashamed of himself/herself. my name is nobody Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 after completing a model, I usually display it. my model room is full of recycled displays. Here is the Ford display (recycled cigar case): Here is the Mopar display (recycled China cabinet): and finally, the General Motors display (recycled Dentist cabinet): The dentist cabinet has a nice storage area underneath the display area. I place older builds in their original boxes and store them in there. overflow models get placed into boxes and put in the rafters of my garage.
my name is nobody Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 That looks like a pretty cool room, CJ. Thank You. I like it. out of the entire five bedroom house, my wife allowed me one room for my stuff. very kind of her, and I isolate my hobbies to this one room. oh, and the garage......uh, and a Shed out by the barn.

All true. Once I apprised the organizers of the malfeasance, and after they investigated, I was awarded the plaque and my name was entered into the records! But if we modelers ourselves, collectively and individually, don't have the honesty and integrity to compete fairly then this sort of thing will happen again and again. And now, back to what one does with completed builds....
Raul_Perez Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Some I keep...some I sell and some get given away to, or traded, with friends. It kind of depends on how much time I put into it, how long I've had it, how well it came out, how much display space I have at the time and how much a friend might want it more than I do... With my four display cases already being full of my Danbury Mint diecast collection and a bunch of my built models, I need to start clearing out some of the stuff I've had for a long time to make room for some of the newer pieces I want to build... Later,

Curtis, After posting my comments, I found out that you did, indeed, blow the whistle on the purchaser's actions and that you notified GSL officials of the situation. I respect and admire you for that! Glad to hear the purchaser's attempt at deceit was exposed and expunged from GSL's records. Congratulations on winning a coveted award in a contest you didn't enter (LOL); it is an appropriate outcome for the circumstances. It also speaks very highly of the quality of your build! I've heard other so-called professional builders who sell on ebay say they don't see anything wrong with a purchaser competing with 'store-bought' completed models. It's good there are people like you. The hobby should thank you for your integrity.
kerc Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 After showng them around at different shows, I usually sell them afterwards, later, like a dumbass, I will regret it.... Don't sell them, man!
