CDA Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Most of are probably thinkin, "who cares", but i gotta share it. As I am currently stationed in Kuwait, I am an Army truck driver working in an office. This is my 3rd trip over here, first time not driving. Anyway, between making slide presentations, goin to meetings and staring at this computer, I will see whats goin on in the world, and take a minute to continue my 20+ year search for the elusive AMT T541/ 546. I been dying to get one, but don't need it bad enough to pay Evil Bay prices. Round 2 savin it for last I guess. So a web site called www.modelexpress.com, who usually has a few rarities, ended my search. They had the Georgia Pacific box cover one for $99! I felt my whole body go numb! They ship it tomorrow! Still has the shrink wrap! Part of me wants to build it, the other says leave it wrapped. What do yall think? Got no glue, or anything out here to even think about starting a truck. Feel like a kid at Christmas! CDA
mackinac359 Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Opening it and taking in the parts is the best part of getting a long desired kit. Tim Open it, fondle the parts and BUILD IT!

Feel like a kid at Christmas! CDA You got every right in the world to bragg and want to share after finding something that took 20 years to find. I looked for the same kit for nearly 6 years before I found one (At a reasonable price) . If I remember a collector was thinning out his stock and I scored mine for $45.00 open but everything was still in the box. Aside this there's a television series on SPEED Channel called "Dangerous Drives" They made an episode devoted to riding shotgun w/ an ARMY transport unit in Iraq. I can't recall which unit it was though. There was some equiptment one there that I'd never seen before!!!
Chad Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 (edited) I had this exact same feeling the other day. I went to a hobby shop who deals strictly in models, I walk to the truck section and he has 7 sealed big rig SETS. Needless to say the wife told me to buy 3 or 4 at only 75.00 a set! He also has the original California hauler for 49.99! I know your excitement! Ibought the schoitz, Pabst, Budwieser and doors light and he gave me all 4 for 250, knocking 50 bucks off because I bought so many!!!!! But remember you have to ship the built model home and they usually break in shipping. Have fun and be safe over there. I also got the italeri canvas side ABC expess trailer for 20 bucks, my wife wanted to kill me LOL, I'm thinking about going back for more Chad Edited January 16, 2011 by Chad
highway Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Open it, fondle the parts and BUILD IT! I love this response, Mike!! I feel the same way! I see it this way, shrink wrap was made to be opened, and if you've been wanting it for so long, you obviously want to build it, it just would not be right to leave it sitting on a shelf.
Guest Johnny Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Opening it and taking in the parts is the best part of getting a long desired kit. Tim X100! All while imagining the build you are planning for it! Tough leaving the drivers seat, isn't it? Take care and have fun building!
Missing in Action Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 OPEN IT!!! Build it,shelve it and get another one and do it again!!! Roy
chuckyr Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Models are meant to be built in my opinion . Even the rarest and most valuable. They are like Ferraris. Those that can afford them buy them and then put them under glass, whereas Enzo would turn over in his grave if he knew it wasn't driven hard! You may not get around to building it any time soon, but don't worship it, build it!

Chad Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 It's called denbigh hobbies in Newport news va Great people as well Chad
Chad Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 That is a dream! and only $250 for all of them? I wish there was a hobby store like that around here. I have to rely on either hobby lobby or the internet. I cant even find any in denver which is a pretty big place. Ypud think they would have at least 1 hobby store with model kits. Too bad im not a train guy because there is one of the largest model train stors in the united states really close to me. And congratulations on finally getting the truck! No no, I paid 250 for 4 of them, they have more. If you'd like I can ask them about shipping, they have a TON of older ant kits for cheap. I think I'm going back to get the old AMT cornflake doubles for 39.99. Chad
Jim B Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Is this the place? http://www.dhcinc.com/ Yes, find out about shipping, and see what else he has in stock.

My wife doesn't understand my obsession with trucks, but she supports the fact that I at least have a hobby. On top of the 1/25- 24 trucks, in Korea i everybody had the RC cars, so i found that Tamiya makes a truck! Eeeexcellent! So, 7years later, all together around $2000 later, I have a 1/14 "Peterbilt" With lots of extras. Shes threatened to make me eat that one! She flung it out in the yard once! Glad the only plastic is the cab. Thats the only part I had to replace.
Ben Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Personally, if I were you, I'd send it home to be safe until you get back home to build it. Then, just maybe, Round Two will have reissued it and you can build the reissued one and leave the original sealed. I personally love having a mint condition hard to get kit thats still sealed after all these years! I'll build it if I really get the urge but I would much rather build a reissue and leave the original as part of my collection. The box art alone makes the original muuuuch more valuable to me as far as visual enjoyment.
Ben Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Also, if your interested,. Illini Replicas makes a photo etch set for that kit that has the grill and badges for the hood.

Ben Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 There's no telling what kits will be released again. There have been some kits that have been reissued to death and some only once. Some kits like the AMT Kenworth W925 conventional can't be reissued because the tooling was modified to make the AMT Kenworth T600 kits. I think a lot of the tooling is currently being cleaned up and reviewed so there's a good chance we could see more kits that have not been around for a while.

Like to see that episode! They have come up with a bunch of new armored stuff since the war started! Its wierd to see all these trucks and stuff now, as compared to when i was here in '03 when we first crossed. Some trucks didn't even have doors!(before they started retro fitting everything with AC) Then in '05, we couldn't even leave Kuwait unless we had the latest armor.

I didn't know Illini Replicas did a P/E set for White. I knew that GR Decals out of Queensland, Australia, did; but not Illini. Interesting news.
chuckyr Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 It's called denbigh hobbies in Newport news va Great people as well Chad Definitely have check that place out if I ever venture in that area. I have found some rare kits at almost give-a-way prices at out of the way hobby shops.

Yeah, Bob had the sets made years ago and the last time I talked with him he had a few sets left. I ordered a couple sets for a friend. They were really nice!
SpreadAxle Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Open it, fondle the parts and BUILD IT! Yes! Let your fingers savor the victory!!! Rippin' the cellophane on a rare kit is a rush. It makes it yours. I would send it home for safe keeping.
