speedy5963 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Here are some 49's I've been playing with. The one in primer I actually started about 14 years ago, I found it about a year ago when I was looking for someother stuff. Not much had been done, just some bad scribing. I finished scribing all the lines and filled in the mistakes I had previously made. I then removed the emblems, door handles and locks, the latches on the decklid and cleaned all the flash and mold lines on the body. I molded in the custom piece for the front end and removed the drip rails as well. The un primered body is another that was pulled out and messed with. I've done some scribing and removed some stuff. Think this one will get some more extensive body work done on it, just not sure to what extent yet
Mooneyzs Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Looking Good Paul!! I will have to find a '49 out of a magazine and show you. Its got a sweet blue kind of like HOK oriental blue. The car was build and from Bakersfield. Not sure if they sold it or what. But will show ya bud!

Sounds good, depending on how long it takes for these to get to color I have had a ton of ideas popping, everything from maybe a candy red and tangerine fade, to a pearl yellow or blue, something that will popp. I need to block out the primered one and see what I've got, the other will take some time, need to get some ideas for the front and rear and get that done before the top gets cut!
speedy5963 Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 Here are a couple more pics after a little more scribing and sanding. Drip rail removed, used the dremel tool where the door handles and locks were and took out the little emblem under the side moldings. Did a little filling with some evercoat. Hopefully tomorrow we'll do some more sanding and start working over the front and rear sections!
speedy5963 Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 The other day I pulled out one of the custom options from an amt 50 Ford. I noticed when simple glued in and worked over, it seems to add some length to the car so I removed some of the stock plastic from the front fenders so that the custom piece wouldn't add much length.

speedy5963 Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 Here are a few more pics after some dremeling and sanding, then roughing everything in with some plastic wood. I'm going to let it sit for a few days then will start working it over again and get everything cleaned up and start doing something in the rear section.

If you have Evercoat filler why are you using Plastic Wood?
speedy5963 Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 I'm confused. If you have Evercoat filler why are you using Plastic Wood? We thin it out and it works great for the initial filling and working over, I'll use some evercoat towards the finishing part of it.
Mike Kucaba Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I like how you cut off some of the front fender to add the custom piece. Nice trick.
speedy5963 Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 Here are a pic with the plastic wood knocked down.
speedy5963 Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 I like how you cut off some of the front fender to add the custom piece. Nice trick. thank you Mike, we have one started from years back that is all worked over really nice but it is a little longer in the front, so this one I thought I'd try something different.
Raul_Perez Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Paul, I did something similar several years ago, but I used the other custom '50 Ford nose clip for mine. Here's a pic of it: I did a lot of work to the body on mine, but I was never really satisfied with the look. It'll be interesting to see what you're able to come up with. Thanks for sharing,

62rebel Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 go back to the pic of the front end where you've smoothed out the plastic wood (i remember when PW was one of the very few options we had for filler!) and look at the flow of the lines referencing the top of the windshield in relation to the door cut lines, where you've removed the drip rails. it's just my 2 cents, but removing the drip rails "raises" the door cut line visually and throws off the balance with the windshield opening. nice trick removing the headlight area; i do that to install the Chrysler dual headlights from the '50 kit and avoid the long nose of the kit piece as well. it's only a little more work to do, and keeps the body from getting "nose heavy". i even jumped into a Revell Merc with both feet and installed a set of them... not as simple as on the '49/'50 kits. this kit is without a doubt my favorite AMT offering. i must have 2 dozen of them in various styles. even 2 "Sportsman" what-if's.

speedy5963 Posted March 10, 2016 Author Posted March 10, 2016 Just pulled out the primered 49 Ford and glad I looked up this old thread as I forgot about the 49 with the custom front end, will have to find that one and get it going as well! Right now I am working on the hood and grill for the primered 49, will post some pics here later this evening.
Jantrix Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Paul I just finished a '49 recently myself. Very nice kit. I look forward to seeing where you go with this.
Mooneyzs Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Paul... I can't wait to see what you do with this one. So glad you have pulled it out and knocked the dust off it. I know you will knock it out of the park.
speedy5963 Posted March 11, 2016 Author Posted March 11, 2016 Thank you Rob, Chris and everyone! I've been having some fun with one of the 49's this evening. Stole Mooneyzs (Chris') idea for a seat, the mexican blanket idea for a seat. Credit to Chris, that is a bit of work. Not so happy with the first attempt, will probably start another one tonight or tomorrow but for the first attempt it did not come out bad and once in the car you don't see as much of the flaws. My wife had brought back a few of these blankets from her last visit to LA and Mexico so I was looking at the colors and patterns. What I've done for the front end here, so years ago, I want to say probably back in 1990 or so when I was about 12 I built a 49, was a pretty basic build from the box but the front end idea came from a drawing in an old Rod n Custom magazine. Used the front custom pan but rather than using one of the custom grills, I actually used the stock grill. The bumper has been cut off to make it fit with the custom pan. For the hood the choice was to either use the custom hood and round out the front to fit with the stock grill or use the stock hood, just smooth it all out, I went with option number 2, stock hood smoothed out. Long ways to go but here is where I am for now:
speedy5963 Posted March 11, 2016 Author Posted March 11, 2016 Second attempt on the seat cover/blanket. Was not happy with the 1st
speedy5963 Posted March 12, 2016 Author Posted March 12, 2016 Few more pics as the progress is coming along, put down some black flocking for carpet and for the package tray.
speedy5963 Posted March 12, 2016 Author Posted March 12, 2016 For the 2nd attempt at this I am pretty happy, could have been a bit better and a lot worse lol:
