evilone Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 In my personal opinion, Donk and great don't go together in a sentence. Sure some may have decent suspension engineering, but most of the time they are crappy jobs, and all of the time the wheels look stupid. agreed you know its bad when a 21 ft long stock 89 caddy hearse can out manuver a 86 chevy caprice lol stupid person lift kits are for trucks lol
evilone Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Of all the truly stupid automotive fads, which one do you think ranks #1??? crimes against humanity is punishable by death that was a innocent cadillac that was murdered for the worst reason EVER
Naydrus Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Wow.... ok.... my 2cents. While the cars looks absolutely ridiculous, I do admite the engineering it takes to lift something like that... but they dont realize that they are VERY top heavy, and could tip on the slightest turn.... but oh well. And in reference to the bubble term.. I have one. I own a 93 Caprice LS... and everyone always asks me how much do I want for my bubble. Its not for sale.. STOP ASKING ME. Im not selling it to some kit so he can stuff 22" + rims, 5k worth of stereo equipment in it. If I ever get the time... this car is going into Hot Rod form. I see everyone goose these cars to idiotic levels... I think its time that someone taps the inner potential of a true road burner and make it come alive.. so when I pull up next to these lifted monstrosites, I can sit there, line lock the brakes and smoke my tires till they cant see.. then pull away, because you know they wont push those cars past 20mph, lol.

You are assuming they care about how fast your car is. I can tell you from experience they don't. Mutual respect goes a long way in the car culture. I have been rescued from some seriously scary situations by some of those type of people. Do I think Donks are a gift to car culture or anything special NOPE but I do think they are cool for what they are. I also don't think rat rods are special neither do I think $15,000 dollar paint jobs on otherwise stock cars are very cool nor do I like seeing factory stock brand new cars sitting in the line at car shows. Everyone has their likes and dislikes no reason to be high and mighty just because you like something different. IMO guys who smoke their tires like that at intersections are no better than those Donks you see. More dangerous too. Edited March 30, 2011 by ra7c7er
Jordan White Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 (edited) Wow.... ok.... my 2cents. ra7c7er Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Only on the better built ones do they have any semblance of good engineering. I'm sure most are just set up like this: Most have good engineering. They follow a similar style of lifting as lifted trucks do. The badly engineered ones don't last very long so if you go out to a show or even see them on the street you will be surprised at how well they are built.
ra7c7er Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Here is the article about the Hummer that started this post. Apparently some artist across the pond considers it art. http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/16/hummer-with-wooden-wheels-called-art/
Greg Cullinan Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I like the Limo and Newport box, pretty wild.
RodneyBad Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Only on the better built ones do they have any semblance of good engineering. I'm sure most are just set up like this: Perty... OMG!! I can not tell ya how Wrong those are. Those with backyard-make-it-up-as-you-go-gineering Should Never Ever see the road nor light of day. Now, if one was build Properly, it may not be all that bad but I haven't seen one yet. BTW: Thanks for the pics, I haven't seen a close up of that Fakengineering before.
mrmike Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Only on the better built ones do they have any semblance of good engineering. I'm sure most are just set up like this: Perty... I can't imagine trying to stop one of those DONKS with huge wheels and tiny little brakes like this! Anytime you add big diameter wheels and tires, you need to upgrade the braking system. This one will need a couple of miles to come to a complete stop from 55 MPH!
Jordan White Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I believe the best way to do it would of course be larger brakes, and a solid front axle beam to give it a proper 4 link, like you would a truck. The less desirable way is of course lowering the A-arms, as it appears the pics I posted attempted to do (though with better fabricating).

Harry P. Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 This one will need a couple of miles to come to a complete stop from 55 MPH! You'd have to be completely crazy to take that monstrosity to 55 mph!
VW Dave Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I always like to say that 'DONK' is the sound of an overstressed balljoint breaking.
MikeMc Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 they are sorta stupid to many.....but then we have:
diymirage Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 if i had to take my chances at 50 MPH i would take this over this by a LONG SHOT Perty...
whale392 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 (edited) That is my biggest beef, Dave. The complete LACK of forethought into how adding 50lbs of wheels/tires will affect stock brakes. The amount of centrifugal MASS you have going with that large a diameter wheel/tire combo cannot be adequately controlled by stock brakes. They cannot shed the extra heat energy created by trying to stop all that built-up inertia. As to the overall geometry of these things; the exact opposite of extreme lowering happens, along with some of the extreme lowering bad side-effects. You completely throw your steering geometry out of whack; misaligned lower control arms/spindle position, dissimilar ball joint/tie rod end angles, scrub and jacking effect galore.............and all for what? To be the loudest colored Peacock in the henhouse? Hope your tail-chasing and color-blinging is worth the life/lives you might give for it. Cars engineered to go fast reliably, to go low and slow reliably, and to get you safely to and from your destination are one thing; but to purposely overlook basic physics/geometry all in the name of fashion? Foolish. Edited April 1, 2011 by whale392
Greg Cullinan Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 They are basically 20-25 mile an hour cars, for cruising. I have yet to see a Donk get into an accident cause it couldn't stop. I have however seen a few other cars that could go fast and stop slow .
whale392 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 When we were racing, we went by something very simple when we built the car: Stop it Suspend it Power it Body it We believed that there was no need for extra power until you could STOP and TURN the car, as well as plant the extra power. Seems these guys didn't get that memo......even at 25mph, you still have to stop. And I have seen a DONK in a wreck....care to guess whos' fault it was? (I'll give you a hint, the DONK took MASSIVE front-end damage).
Sixx Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Of all the truly stupid automotive fads, which one do you think ranks #1??? YIKES!!!!! How " stoopid " man, donks & low riders bouncing down the road just kills a cars looks!! sorry, my 2-cents...Sixx
mrmike Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 they are sorta stupid to many.....but then we have: IMHO, the engineering here is 100% better!
Terror Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 (edited) Maybe someone will make an oversize body to fit the wheels someday. The big chrome spokes would look cool on an Amish cart. Edited April 1, 2011 by Terror
Draggon Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Makes me wonder how this idea: got translated into this: Oh, yea......crack!
