Danno Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 "The new phone book is here!" is a quote from the movie "The Jerk." Try to keep up with the tour group, willya??? (BTW... I'm with you. What does that have to do with MCM?) To me, it was instantly a reference to the relative quantity of content ... compared to the Scaley Otto Pamphlet, MCM is a veritable phone book sized tome. If that was the OP's intent, I got it. If it wasn't, it should have been.
ra7c7er Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 To me, it was instantly a reference to the relative quantity of content ... compared to the Scaley Otto Pamphlet, MCM is a veritable phone book sized tome. If that was the OP's intent, I got it. If it wasn't, it should have been. I thought the same way as you. Of course I don't like the aforementioned Steve Martin movie so I would have never gotten the reference. --- As for the Hot Wheels content. I like it. It's something different. Their is a HUGE Hot Wheels club in my area has over 300 paying members compare that to the model car clubs in my area and you are looking at a 10:1 ratio in favor of those little cars. Nationally is small scale diecast more popular than the mid 20s scale nope but around here it is.
mikemodeler Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 I liked it, too ... Mark Jones is one of the finest modelers in the country. If you can't learn something from him, regardless of what scale or medium he's working in, then ... well, I just feel sorry for you. The beefing that inevitably occurs here when MCM publishes an article about a subject that isn't plastic and 1/25 scale, or that doesn't meeting someone's definition of "model car," gets pretty tiresome, too ... Back to Mark's article, though. Consider this ... at a buck a pop, think of all the Hot Wheels you could buy and modify for the price of one 1/25th scale kit! Not to mention it is easier to stash away a lot more Hot Wheels than Revell kits! The display cases are much smaller too!
Darin Bastedo Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 I have no idea what this thread is about...I thought a phonebook was the darn heavy yellow thing that appears by my front door and gets promptly recycled.. :? It's from the movie "The Jerk" with Steve Martin. "Navin R. Johnson: The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here! Harry Hartounian: Boy, I wish I could get that excited about nothing. Navin R. Johnson: Nothing? Are you kidding? Page 73 - Johnson, Navin R.! I'm somebody now! Millions of people look at this book everyday! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity - your name in print - that makes people. I'm in print! Things are going to start happening to me now."
Harry P. Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 I continue to maintain that anyone who expects to be blown away by every single article in ANY publication _ be it MCM, Scale Auto, Rodder's Journal or the Wall Street Journal _ has ridiculously high expectations. Not ridiculously high expectations... more like impossible expectations.
LAone Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) my LHS has had some (more than one, as in they never have any) issues in stock and have been buying them there(yes i do plan to subscribe, eventually). totally love the mag! i just picked up 159 yesterday and well, just another one to put to the love list.. i also like the fact that the pages don't smear when you hold them while reading..(oil on fingers) or drop a bit of water on them.. reading it while at work, trying to pass the day.
