mookie Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 After some stuff went down last night, I was a little sad. But the mailman made my day, I received my "61 Impala 409 convertible. I got the hardtop version a long time ago, all i did was paint it, and I put it away because i lost the inspiration. Now I have the inspiration to work on it. Im panning to do the hardtop stock, and the converitble a lowrider.
mookie Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 Update #1 Cut the fender wells, and springs. Notice the difference in stock spring versus custom spring. This is the difference between stock suspension height and custom height. Sorry for the quality of the pictures.
GOTH KUSTOMS Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Heck that one hell of a drop in spring hight right there, whats for the front????
mookie Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 Heck that one hell of a drop in spring hight right there, whats for the front???? Now that you mention it, it is quite a drop, haven't really noticed it till right now. I am planning on maybe a little lower than stock for the front.

mookie Posted July 18, 2011 Author Posted July 18, 2011 Update #4 Exhaust setup Rear suspension Front suspension, with engine mockup and rear of the car
Greg Pugh Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Just a thought for ya to chew on here.......You might want to lengthen your rear control arms. After lowering the car that severely, it will bring the wheels forward in the wheel wells. You could lengthen them to offset that and center the wheels.

wgflatliner Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 this has actually motivated me to do the same exact kit and make it a lowrider. i plan on having mine dropped in the back, and raised in the front though. i'll be watching this build.

wgflatliner Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 What do you mean by "leveled off"? what i'm trying to say is this: if you lengthen the control arms to make it sit centered while completely lowered, that will only work for that particular position of the wheels. If for some reason you raise the car to regular ride height, or raised higher than that, WITH the extended control arms, then the control arm will not be centered at that point. if you lengthen them to compensate for the lowered suspension, then that alters how it sits when at regular ride height. this is also true for the real cars. so honestly the lowered suspension with those control arms would work as long as it didn't bottom out on the rear quarter panel or the control arms hitting the belly of the car. The only thing i could possibly see that would need checked is to make sure you test fit everything with the suspension in the right spot to make sure nothing bottoms out.
george 53 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Why not just add a lowering block to the suspension arms? Between them and the axle?

I agree with everything you're saying. I just thought the car would be more aesthetically pleasing if the rear wheels were centered in the wheel well. While everything you said is true, this model will most likely be in the slammed down in the rear position permanently where a real car (with hydraulics) would be up and down all of the time. In the real car world, you're right, it wouldn't make sense to make that compensation. But I was just thinking, with this being a model, that it might look a little better sitting on the shelf that way.

Personally, if it were me, i'd possibly lengthen it very slightly. but that's just me. build on, OP, build on.
mookie Posted September 16, 2011 Author Posted September 16, 2011 Changed up the red one a little. The wheels are HRE off my brothers lambo kit he broke, they were intended for a mustang that has been on the back burner for a long time. I also opened, hinged and jammed the trunk.
LAone Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 dang! those rims are huge!! but they look good on there. so i guess the front won't steer?
tooltas Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 dang those look like 24by 10 and 24by15s i was going to use some on a 57 belair that was tubbed. but was looking funny
mookie Posted September 26, 2011 Author Posted September 26, 2011 trunk mockup, just need to clean it up.
mookie Posted September 28, 2011 Author Posted September 28, 2011 Got a chance to work on it a little today. The carb and the air cleaner are from 64 Impala the valve cover from 68 Corvette. The seats are the extra ones from the 07 GT500, I cut of the headrests to give it a cleaner look
