edward smith Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Hey guys, do any of you have any idea how good this kit is? It is the '59 Impala with the white version with flames on the big box and the black one next to it. Looks like a nice kit, I just wanted to know if anyone has built it here.
MrObsessive Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 I built the convertible years ago, and I don't recall anything really bad about building it. I think the engine sits a bit too far back under the cowl as the 1:1 '59's weren't quite like that. I do have some nits about the roof shape on the hardtop, as I think the roofline is a bit too flat compared to their '60 which is about perfect to my eyes. Also, watch out for sink marks around the tailfins-------particularly at the top of the fins. It will take some careful body work to fill those in, as well as trying to preserve the chrome trim that's there. Hope this helps!
cruz Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 I did one a few years back and thought it was a great kit to the point where I actually just purchased another one from ebay myself. Like Bill says, there are some pretty deep sink marks on top of the rear fins that you have to carefully work with but other than that I loved it!!! edward smith Posted August 5, 2011 Author Posted August 5, 2011 Oh Cruz, this thing is awesome! Thanks for sharing, I will keep the sink marks in mind, I am actually checking them out while I write this. What shade of white did you paint yours and what paint did you use if you don't minnd?

Thanks Ed, the color is Tamiya Pearl White w/ Tamiya clear, the blue accents are Testor's enamel 50's aqua, just wanted to create a little contrast since the interior is also white.
Tony T Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 (edited) I built the convertible about 11 or 12 years ago...the only thing I really didn't like was the interior floor seam. It was a bit hard to cover up for a box-stock build, but with some careful filling it does make a nice model all in all! Careful BMF work pays off!! Edited August 5, 2011 by Tony T
Eshaver Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Mannnnnnn, dat ride be screamin J. C. Witney all over it. Check out dem Lake Pipes , dem Spinners , dat Tube grille ! Dat ride needs parkin in muh driveway NOW! Ed Shaver
Danno Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 It is sweet. Ed's right. (Emoticon indicating "J.C.Whitney Ride of the Week" award-winner here.)
59 Impala Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 I had no problems building this one. I built it to look like the one I had way back in 1967. The only difference is mine had a 3 speed on the tree and a 4 barrel carb and ran like a raped ape. No power brakes or steering. I loved that car. Dan
Foxer Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 (edited) All these builds shown here are magnificent builds of a great kit! I started building the hardtop Impala I had and started with the convertible and got a resin hardtop from ... not sure. That was enough off the convertible body I started just cutting the top off. Then the hardtop kit came out and just used that. All it has needed is BMF for about 15 years.. I think it's an exceptional kit detail wise and it will surly put your BMF resume up a notch! Harry P. Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Hosted on Fotki Hosted Holy excrement, Cruz! If it wasn't for the fact that you shot it on your deck, that could pass for a real car!
Guest Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 Otheres have ocvered it preetty well, great kit, biggest isue is the sink marks on the fins.
Aaronw Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 Not the Impala but I have a '59 El Camino I've been working on off and on (more off) and painting the undersides of the tail fins was something of a chore.
Tonioseven Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 I was hoping I wouldn't have to get this kit but after seeing Cruz's, I might need to rethink the idea.
