Chris C. ~ I'm really liking that '66 Nova. That looks slick and even though it was trying to get you down, it looks like you prevailed. Any more pics of this ride?

This is an old A/ Dragster I built for a 50s club project. It's a combination of scratch built and parts box stuff. P8270040.jpgP8270045.jpgP8270043.jpg

Here is my 66 Nova. I loved building this car. It was frustrating and rewarding all at the same time. Few things I wish I would have done differently but I learned alot with this build.

Chris...I can't resist asking you this...Why do you have the distributor coming out of the intake manifold? Or is that one of those things you wished you had done differently?

fyi. the "dist." is not really mounted to the front of the intake manifold. it actually mounts to the front of the block via the upper timing cover bolts. the "dist" is being run off of the front of the cam via a belt drive. i could go into a more detailed explanation if you like.

it does give kind of the impression that the dist. is mounted to the front of the manifold although the reality is, that it's not.

hope this helps.

Wow thanks for that bit of info Dave, I have always wondered how they worked being mounted in a vertical position like that about even with the top of the block.

Thanks for the explanation guys. When I first saw the photo of the engine, I couldn't figure the mounting position of the distributor either. I know I'm not 'up' on all of the new technology and products. Looks like it just needs a triangle shaped bracket to be correct. I'd really like to see one of these mounted up and in place. Guess I'll be 'Googling' through images.

they are cogged timing belts and sprockets. they are not a "v" type belt. besides, the distributor on this setup does not control the ignition timing. these systems have a crank trigger. they do how ever control "phasing".

chris, in no way am i trying to step on your build. i have seen this car at some of the shows i go to and it is FANTASTIC!!!!! i was only trying to assist those who don't understand how the real stuff works.

No worries and thank you for the kind words. We have talked at a few shows, most recently at Gilbertsville and I enjoy talking to people that are passionate about what they do. I can' wait to see the completed 1/8 Camaro you are working on.

Guys...I do know about the distributor...don't forget..I've been around drag racing for over 40 years. I figured that's what you were going after Chris but I can see that this one is clearly mounted to the front of the intake manifold. I was just wondering why you had mounted it there that's all. I thought maybe you had a poor photo somewhere and you were under the impression that was how it was supposed to be mounted. Thanks for your explanation. ;)

"I found a couple of detailed pictures online that demonstrates this better. Pretty cool innovation."

Indeed it is. One place I can think of that this setup would really help is the classic Big Block in a Tri-five Chevy where there is no room for the distributor at the firewall!
