Jantrix Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 After near two years languishing in the limbo that is contract work, I recieved an official offer from Honeywell of a permanent position. You know, the kind with benefits, vacation days and stuff! This is such a load off my back. I was looking at the unemployment line in October if this didn't happen, and the only reason it did, is because another Honeywell technicians poor health forced an early retirement. It's been a tough couple of years for the Mattis' I gotta tell you. But now the wife has finally found work and this happens for me............whew. What a life. The only downside.......having to deal with the guys that are still contract and odds are will not be seeing my good fortune. There just aren't any openings left. The temperature in the lab has gotten much colder if you know what I mean. I know lots of us are dealing with this crappy job market. I'm hoping we all see the upswing soon.
Custom Mike Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Congratulations Rob, don't let the cold shoulders faze you, just do your job better than they do, and smile the entire time! It'll eat 'em alive!
kenb Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Good for you Rob, I know just where you're coming from. I was injured on the job last October, had surgery and was out for 6 months. My wife got laid off to week after my surgery, which put us in dire straights. Workers comp in Georgia caps off at $500 no matter how much you earn yearly. She still hasn't found a job, and she's quite qualified at what she does. Seems like businesses want to hire unqualified people and pay them less. I did get a lot of building time in when I had my knee surgery. Glad things are looking up for you, it's not a nice way to look at things, but nowadays you have to look out for #1 and not worry about the rest of em'. Ken
Dr. Cranky Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Wow, man, that's fantastic news. Congrats. In this economy finding a job like that is cause of celebration indeed.
whale392 Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 What do you do for Honeywell? We run a lot of Honeywell hard parts in our aircraft. I also used to install Honeywell avionics suites into King-Aires.
Jantrix Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 I am an engineering test technician at Honeywell Clearwater, FL. I inspect and test circuit boards (very expensive, used in space is all I can say about that) from design to finished product. Basically the engineers design it. I test it. Then we both figure out why it doesn't work. Lather, rinse, repeat.
whale392 Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 (edited) Nice. I used to live and work in the Orlando area, then got a wild hair to move to Ohio. I was doing A&P work, along with installing avionics and RVSM compliance retrofits on Citations and later King-Airs. Currently, I A&P on CRJ200s and CRJ700s, which use Honeywell APUs. crazyjim Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 That's great news, Rob. I'm looking forward to seeing you in Tampa October 14-16.
Jantrix Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 (edited) Congrats! It's a bear trying to find work now. It's too bad other's have to frown on your good luck. I can understand where they are coming from. They know the openings have dried up and I just sort of lucked into my spot. However I was chosen over them, and that's where the hurt feelings come into play. That's great news, Rob. I'm looking forward to seeing you in Tampa October 14-16. Good news Jim, can't wait to see ya and catch up. Edited August 19, 2011 by Jantrix
MrObsessive Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Rob that IS good news! I just found out this morning that 50 people on my job were laid off yesterday. While no one in my section was let go........it did involve some people I know and a couple buildings in my area were hit. This is the second time in as many years that we've had layoffs. This time is not as bad as two years ago, but any layoff is unwelcome at this juncture. Yes, it's VERY tough finding gainful employment these days, and the sad thing is-----it's not going to get any better any time soon. In fact, things will get much tougher before long.
Dragracer Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Congrats on the job Rob!,I myself almost got a job this month, but do to a small medical problem, I could only wear gloves 20% of the time & the job said needed to wear gloves 100% of the time, so no-go! , been out of work since 2006!, & can't even get a interview!, some luck has come my way tho, lived in Fl. for 34 yrs. (just north of you, little town called Hudson),found out the insurance I had owes me some money, couldn't find me here on Az., so sent the money to Tallahassee (as law requires), sent in my claim form & now just have to wait till they get to my claim. Then small spending spree! (model stuff don't you know!). Once again congrats on the job!
george 53 Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Oh yes, Rob, Congratulations! Praise God to hear your fortune is getting better. Hopefully it'll work out an you'll just look back on the past with a MUCH brighter future! God Bless you's both!
