Danny Lectro Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 This is the first (and only) car model I've finished since I got back into car modelling last year (I've been a sci-fi modeler for years). Now I have a bunch of cars in varying states of completion. Link to more photos This is a repop of a kit that first came out in 1960, and it does show it's age. It's built mostly out of the box. I wanted to use the old-school hot-rod white-walls that came with the kit, but for some reason the manufacturer did not include enough rims - there were 4 white-walls and 2 drag slicks, and 2 rims for the drag slicks and only 2 rims for the white-walls. While doing research, I found photos of a rat-rod sporting 22 inch rims as a joke by the car's owner, so I decided to add these "thug-ride" rims I found cheap at my local hobby shop. I stripped all of the chrome off. The frame and motor were painted with Model Master red, the body and interior were painted Model Master primer gray, and a few shades of Model Master Metallizers were used for the various hardware. I gave it a liberal application of Tamiya Weathering Master Soot, Rust and Mud. I attached a side mirror from a die-cast VW bug. It's now impossible to see much detail inside, but the seats were painted black with steel shells, and the gauge cluster came from a die-cast VW bug. I painted the shift knob to look like an 8-ball. I'm not entirely happy with how this came out, and I see so many things I would have done differently, but I'm glad I didn't give up and stuff it back in a box. My next rat rod will be much rattier.
Jantrix Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Dude, if the wheels are removable I will gladly donate a set of wheels to save that excellent build. Those wheels ruin a very cool and clean build. It is my opinion so take that for what its worth. Send me a PM if I can help.
Danno Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 That's very interesting ... in an unusual sort of way. Not rat, not bling, not hot rod, not street rod. Kind of an amalgam ... which is pretty intense nomenclature for a streethotblingrat!

Thanks, but I had to make modifications to make these wheels fit, so it's kinda stuck this way. However, whenever Round 2 re-releases the AMT Tall T, I plan to take the original steelies and the chopped body from this, and the steelies and chassis from the tall T, to make a proper 60's hot rod with cycle fenders. The Tall T or roadster body will go on this chassis with the bling rims. That's very interesting ... in an unusual sort of way. Not rat, not bling, not hot rod, not street rod. Danny Lectro Posted August 27, 2011 Author Posted August 27, 2011 <-----see avatar Dude, I did say it was not my first choice, okay? I do appreciate your comments on the build quality. Thanks!
Rick Schmidt Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 The car looks pretty good I can'tr help but wonder tho ... if those wheels were less chrome or even the matching red would they look a bit better
outlaw035 Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 danny i think its pretty "KQQL" look'n just the way it is...nice thing about building a rat rod is that pretty much anything goes...so rock on....
Danny Lectro Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 Thank you for the kind remarks, Rick and Outlaw!
deathskull59 Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 nah i would get rid of those big rims. and get some chromed out cregers, steeles, or better yet magnesium gasser wheels with white walls and big wide treaded drag slicks. will make this 25 t rat rod look much more better. eather way you did a very good job with the body and stuff. B)

B) I SECOND THAT!!! It's not an personal attack anyway, but it would look better like that. Nicely built anyway, nothing wrong with that, but those big wheels don't fit to "Ratty" look.
brodie_83 Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I personally think it looks really cool! I've never seen something like it, so it's definitely unique and different, but I think you did a fantastic job. I like the blingy wheels on it...keep building!
Danny Lectro Posted September 7, 2011 Author Posted September 7, 2011 Thanks all, for the kind words and constructive criticisms.
retrobuilder Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 I like it! its different. all that matters is that you enjoyed building it and that you like it. keep having fun.
