Harry P. Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Pardon my ignorance...but "DONK" is a new term to me. Can someone explain please? A donk is a car that has huge clown-car wheels. One of the absolute dumbest automotive fads ever, IMO. An automotive abomination if there ever was one.
Harry P. Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Okay, I get it now. Honestly...this is the first place I ever saw anything like that and they are absolutely rediculous looking! Yessir, that they are...
Harry P. Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Out of all of those you posted, I find THAT one to be the most offensive... They're all pretty offensive if you ask me... but that one is offensive and crass!
Patrick2005 Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Those DORK's look like over-sized Hotwheels

I like to say that 'DONK' is the sound of an overstressed GM balljoint breaking.
Nick Notarangelo Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Out of all of those you posted, I find THAT one to be the most offensive... I agree since I was born and rasied in Newport Rhode Island
Danno Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 I agree since I was born and rasied in Newport Rhode Island Yikes! Them Road Eyelanders named a whole city after them ciggerettes!?!?!?!?! Remember: There's hardly any difference between DONK and DORK ~ only one itty bitty little letter.
Dr. Cranky Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Now, now, as a builder who likes a variety of subject, I am glad DONKS are possible and available to others as model building subjects . . . nothing wrong with that. Now, in real life you could not pay me enough to drive one . . . the look totally unsafe to me . . .
mikelo Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Out of all of those you posted, I find THAT one to be the most offensive... What, with your name on the side of it?! I thought that would be your fave. I still love the story, Ithink it is on wikipedia, on how that name came to be. Appears the person who did one of the first ones thought the emblem on his car was a donkey. Hence "donk". Too bad it was actually an IMPALA!!! Mike
Harry P. Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Harry - you should let us know how you really feel, stop holding back. I know... I really need to come out of my shell and speak my mind one of these days...
Jantrix Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Now, in real life you could not pay me enough to drive one . . . the look totally unsafe to me . . . Yep, somebody call Ralph Nader!
Chuck Most Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Out of all of those you posted, I find THAT one to be the most offensive... Oh, come on Mike- that one has your name written all over it!
mookie Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 nice to see this is a hot topic, anyways heres some updates and after that this is how it sits. I don't know what class it would run in, anybody have any ideas if it would even qualify for a class.
Chuck Most Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 (edited) It could run in just about any heads-up or bracket class- most of the cars like that in my area (ones with mostly stock chassis and body) race in those classes. Already looks way better for not being a mile up in the air. Edited September 1, 2011 by Chuck Most
MikeMc Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Out of all of those you posted, I find THAT one to be the most offensive... He didn't post these.....
charlie8575 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I'll admit...real wagon wheels have a certain degree of cool to them....but really! Javier- massive improvement. No car deserves to be abused like that- real or model. Charlie Larkin
Ry4ns302 Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 Well either one of two NHRA classes..depending on the final weight of the car (assuming full interior), a super stock, or depending on the motor (if you go wild) super street, I'm pretty sure the NHRA website breaks down the classes. Either way, the build looks good, and even though I wouldn't drive a "so-called DONK", a clean model of one is pretty sick! Alot of customization goes into those cars, alotta labor..it only makes sense to build a model of one. I like a clean street car more though....Good luck with the build.
tooltas Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 more of a stock chassie 10 inch class street racer B) go look on the drag site yellow bullit .com an look at some of the drag cars on there.
deathskull59 Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 so how many clowns can fit in that clown car oh i mean DONK like 5 or maby 40 clowns!!!! !
ItsThePaint! Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Yeah, DONKs are ridiculous. and probably unsafe... but on the other hand, how many ridiculous fads have come and gone in the automotive world? Gassers (even if they are "cool") are ridiculous and pretty unsafe (and if they are safe, why do you think pro racers sit 5 inches off the ground?). How many jacked up tri-fives had ball-joint spacers, and straight axles for that matter? They all handle like elephants on stilts. A lot of people think rat-rods are pretty goofy too(note my avatar pic)-and unsafe. I agree with Cranky-if it gets kids away from x-box(or worse), let em' build what they perceive as cool. How many "adults" hated all that crazy Roth stuff in the sixties? If "adults" stopped trying to push their tastes and perceptions of cool on youths of today, you might get a few more builders to keep the hobby going. It may be a "ridiculous" fad, but the "dirty south" look is progressing into something new, the rims ain't getting smaller (deal with it-it's here just like fuel injection and on-board computers) and the cars are coming back down to mother earth. Crazy, sensory overload stuff is what gets kids' attention, and I don't see anything wrong with that. It's what's happened throughout history-rock and roll, muscle cars, whatever-there are always detractors to every fad, automotive or not. Stop trying to shove your opinions down every kid with baggy pants throat, and gain some insight to what's happening now, like it or not. You might be able to subtly influence them. Otherwise you come off like that crazy southern baptist guy from "Footloose" who outlawed dancing in his town. And to boot, you're probably driving off the only people that might keep the hobby alive... Just a little food for thought.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 What you have your work cut out with all that chassis modifications, unless you are planning to make this one a curbside.
torinobradley Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 My favorite part of Donks is watching them try to turn into a parking space... Rubbbb, grinddd, scrappeee, creak, groan, etc... Someone say a 13 point u-turn... Not my style but fun to poke fun at... Oh, and what about those belly scrapers. Speed bumps? Driveways? Hi-Jackers. Ever watch a jacked up Camaro try to corner? Funny you mention "clown car". My dad used to say that too. Way back in the '70s when people would put wires, curb feelers, wild colored super flake paint jobs, light-up hood ornaments, landau bars and extreemly padded vinyl roofs on pretty much every type of car out there.
