Darin Bastedo Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I want to do my 53 Hudson as a mild kustom, lake opipes caddy engine, frenched headlights etc. But I'm stuck on wheels I have some caddy sombreros, but am worried they might be a little cliche'. Is there any wheel covers available in scale that you guys think would look cool, bit would be a little different?
george 53 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Darin, Try th "Flipper" Hubs that came in the 59 Ford Skyliner. Their different, and I remember them being on ALOT of cool cruisers! i THINK they were like 56 Olds hubs or something of that nature.
Chuck Most Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Dodge Lancer caps would look cool as well- not sure what kits have them (if any) but they are available in resin. Replicas and Miniatures makes quite a few cool period full wheel covers, only (possible) downside is they don't come plated.
Harry P. Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I've always liked the look of WW tires with steel wheels, trim rings and baby moons.
BOSWELL891 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I agree with Harry and if you dont like the baby moon just leave it off and keep the beauty ring
Rob Z Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 The '53 Stude Starliner has a nice set of Flippers in it also, or possibly a 3 or 4 bar cap.

tabsscale1 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Modelhaus Carries some Olds Fiesta hubcaps and some Dodge lancers caps. I am using the Fiesta caps on my 50's comminity build on this forum. Also remember back in the 50's alot of people put spolights on their cars. Here is a link to some picture of Modelhaus stuff. http://public.fotki.com/drasticplasticsmcc/1/2/1/after-market-source/modelhaus/

Eshaver Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 The hubcaps in question were found on A M T annuals back in 1960-2and Jo-han kits right up to 1965. Modelhaus is about the only place you may find what you need these days ............ Ed Shaver

They are the stock caps for the car shown....It is 100% except for the mags, cut springs in front, and lowering blocks in the rear.

modelercarl Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 As a freshly licensed driver in 1956 in suburban Detroit and with my first car in 1957 ("53 Studebaker) I can tell you that the Olds Fiesta 3 bar spinner was by far the most popular hubcap around. They were a hot item with thieves and you could usually find someone while cruising the many drive-ins around the Detroit area who was selling them out of his trunk. Perhaps next in popularity was the Plymouth "Chinaman's hat", I think a '57 model year, and then probably the full moon finished out the most often seen hubcaps. A few guys who regularly ran their cars at Detroit Dragway or Milan had unadorned steel wheels. You would see some baby moons but not many. This prevailed pretty much through the end of the 50's and very early 60's. I went into the service in '61 and when I returned to the States in '64 these hubcap styles had been replaced by the Cragers and other specialty hubcaps.
sbk Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 If you're going for a late '50's look. Modified 51/52 Olds with 6 flippers. Modelhaus has these. 61 Plymouth. Modelhaus as well as others have these.
fumi Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 53 Stude and 57 Plymouth hubcaps were also popular choices back then. RMCM makes both.
