Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Thanks, Andy. I bookmarked it. Great stuff indeed. In case you haven't seen this, here's Jon K describing the new line:
Psychographic Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I have to say, thank goodness that fad died in the 80's early 90's Didn't the first chameleon paint come out on the 96 Mustang?
tabsscale1 Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Todd, those are marvelous . . . I gotta practice doing this kind of paintjob on models. I love it. Who started this trend in painting cars? Was it Starbird? Gene Wifiled is known for paint fades from way back. That 57 I am doing was painted on a 57 by Larry Watson. He did some wonderful paint jobs. Those 2 i showed are John D'Agostino cars. This is a gene Winfield paint job and the next one is a Larry watson paint job
Harry P. Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 When it comes to auto graphics, my tastes run toward subtle rather than "in yer face"... I've always thought ghost flames are a good combination of custom and class. They can look especially cool on a black car, but I couldn't find a good example to post.
SteveG Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I always had a thing for using Fades and Pearls, I got to combine them both on this project ..... I only used two colors for this effect, all the middle shades are just intermixed. -Steve
Longbox55 Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 EDIT: I've seen the Colorshift paints only at my local Lowe's, and a can is about $15, and when I first found it, a can was $20! The 2 cans it took for the cab and sleeper and the one can for the frame puts the total of this paint job at $60!! I've seen it at Autozone, it runs about the same price as Lowes, which is the only other place I've seen it. The local Autozones near me only seem to carry the Blue/Purple, my local Lowes has that one and the green. I've been keeping an eye out for any of the other colors at both places, but haven't seen anything yet.
Bill Edman Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 i love this thread it will give inspiration across the board
fatkidd Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 ok...i'll throw in some stuff i've painted over the years... bmx bicycle painted black with blue fire gilf club painted black with blue fire (for my dad on father's day a few years ago) r/c helicopter canopy painted chrome yellow with purple fire (left side) r/c helicopter canopy painted chrome yellow with purple fire (right side) realistic fire has blown up on the custom circuit...although i think its fading away a bit
charlie8575 Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 If we're talking color, how about ideas on how to get the shades we're looking for? Right now, for example, I'm trying to get a shade of "gold" for an interior on a '68 Charger I'm poking at, and it'll have to be mixed. Any ideas? This is a non-metallic gold. I'm leaning towards yellow for the primary component with a little bit of brown to darken it. Charlie Larkin
Tonioseven Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Fingernail polish, decals, pearl powders, & masked graphics...
mytricia Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 i have to get a camera<don't have one>and until then i can't post any pics.sorry guys!!i just painted lindberg's 66 chevelle s.s. with spaz stix.i used their black basecoat-their purple/green,etc... colorshift paint and their clearcoat.it needs to be polished out.point being-it,s not a donk or lo-rider, but it looks awesome.it is gonna be built very close to box stock except for a few changes.i mention all this because i got introduced to spaz stix from a model magazine.they're known for having chrome<like alclad>in an aerosol.i haven't tried it yet,but fellow modelers might want to check into there products,so far-i'm impressed.hope this helps somebody MARTY-"mytricia"
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 WOW, I go to sleep and wake up and you guys have TAKEN OFF and made this a great thread! THANK YOU! TONIO, my friend, THAT'S IT!!! You can't let another month go by without doing a how-to tape your kind of paint job HOW-TO, please. I will PM you about it! Keep the eye candy rolling, my friends. Also, those of you with a bit more knowledge of the history of when a particular effect or "trick" got started in the paint industry, I hope you will share all that wonderful information with us!
Bill Edman Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I agree with dr cranky Tonio we need a how to please
highway Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I've seen it at Autozone, it runs about the same price as Lowes, which is the only other place I've seen it. I thought somewhere in another thread here I seen someone mention that there is supposed to be a red in the Colorshift line too, but I haven't seen it yet. I did noticed the last time I was at Lowe's the price was $5.00 cheaper than the $19.and change I paid originally, I wonder if the price drop is thanks to Autozone starting to carry it now too!
Tonioseven Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Here's an Olds Starfire I got a good start on but lost direction... Loosely inspired by this car... I want to finish this one but I'm at a loss as to how to proceed with the top patterns. I'll figure something out.
MikeMc Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I agree with dr cranky Tonio we need a how to please The pictures do not do it justice......Norbie Lives!!!
mikemodeler Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 While I appreciate the artwork and amount of time one may spend achieving those incredible graphics, I know my limitations and am still mastering two tone paint jobs. I like the fade jobs as those seem to stay in style, depending on the model, and the intricate layout that Antonio did on those cars has been around for decades but I see things like the true fire being more of a fad. They look nice but maybe I am more old school in that I like 1 or 2 colors on a vehicle and the more graphics there are on a car, the less I seem to like it. Maybe I would feel differently if I could paint like Antonio!
Tonioseven Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Thanks for the compliments but I only attempt to do some of what I see. I see paintjobs like Truscale's, Gary Seeds' and others and am in AWE at what they accomplish with an airbrush! I have a lot of ideas in my head but often am not sure how to go about laying them out. I just grab some tape and a few fresh #11 blades and get to it. I'm glad that others dig my work; I just try to enjoy it as I go along.
Dr. Cranky Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Eric, those look fabulous . . . I think you and Antonio are doing some amazing things with tape and paint. Keep the eye candy coming!!!
Tonioseven Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 For those of you that dig the color-changing paints, Sally Hansen (fingernail polish company) made a line of color-changing polishes called "Nail Prisms". I have a few bottles left and I have also used them on a few projects... They can still be found on Ebay for roughly $5 a bottle. They work best when applied over a black base and thinned at least 50% polish/thinner.
Dr. Cranky Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 Nice models, and wonderful paint. I've only used nail polish once, but I can see where there would be lots of amazing color possibilities.

Maybe I would feel differently if I could paint like Antonio! I am in that boat also....However the lowrider community has been doing the panel, lace, and multi color paint jobs for 30 plus years. I am amazed at the time , thought and effort that these jobs represent! And Tonio is way too modest....I have seen many of his works 1:1 and pictures will not do justice to his work!!
Dr. Cranky Posted October 3, 2011 Author Posted October 3, 2011 Thanks for your input, Mike. I agree with you that lowrider culture has been around for a long time. I am looking forward to the day when I can see Tonio's models in person.
