Dr. Cranky Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 The idea for this thread comes from the fact that every time (a very human reaction, I guess) I think I've seen it all in terms of models (or dioramas) that push the boundaries of what is possible, along comes something that surprises me. Here I am think of the work of people like Ricky Couch, Roger Yu, Tommy May, and countless others, all builders who tend to break the mold by coming up with a model or a subject that nobody has seen before. So this is an attempt to survey what you think you haven't seen yet, or what you would like to see (not necessarily in new kits or aftermarket parts) but in--and here you have to think outside the box--in models or in the real world. If you think of examples, please feel free to post them . . . I am hoping once again this will be an inspirational thread for lots of folks, myself included. Thank you.
Scale-Master Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 If you haven't seen it, how can you post it?
MikeMc Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 If you haven't seen it, how can you post it? It's what Most artists and Photographers do daily.....VISUALIZATION...... like Harley Riders say....."If you have to ask....."
charlie8575 Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I'd like to see if someone would want to make simulated exhaust, perhaps using a steam unit from an HO or N scale steam locomotive. The cylinder pulses occur fast enough on a real car that a fairly steady stream of smoke would be acceptable, although if someone wanted to rig up a sound recording to go along with it, that would be pretty cool, too. Dr. Cranky Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Now you are talking, Charlie, this is a good example of what I had in mind . . . pushing the imagination. Yes, visualize! The proverbial box, think outside of it.
Dr. Cranky Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Here's an example of another one of Hollywood Jim's build (a master of T.O.B.): Jim is always thinking Tiki, and he and Ricky Couch are a few of the builders I know of who are crazy about Tiki, so, Jim pulled this one together: His work is always fresh and new because often time you get the feeling you haven't seen anything like this done in scale.
Chuck Most Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I would like to see a diorama with the cars suspended up over the ground. Like an old 'Tournament Of Thrills' scene or an (gulp) airbourne General Lee. I've seen mirror surfaces used by aircraft modelers, where the plane is cut in half and secured to the mirror base to create the illusion of a plane in flight. I'm wondering if the same thing could be applied to a diorama depicting a jumping car.
Dr. Cranky Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Interesting, Chuck. A lot of model railroad builders have many tricks like mirrors to convey a sense of depth, etc . . . There's a world of possibilities too with models, including this:
Monte's Motors Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Now Cranky, you have a good one here. I bought one of those Military DUKW (DUCK) in 1/35th scale. (Why can't military just be 1/25th) Anyway I have a thought and ONLY a thought. What about building a DUCK as a Top Fuel or Funny Car. Not in my plans, but I could see it.
Dr. Cranky Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Roger, that's why I think this thread is a good idea . . . just share neat stuff like this, and if you don't think it, someone else might . . . and who knows what idea will trigger more eye candy, which is really what EYEGORE and I are addicted to. LOL.Case in point, if you look at this vid, it's a great example of someone who's lightbulb went off and created something out of a normal, every day item or shape. http://www.youtube.com/user/ArtofModeling#p/u/6/P8i0HLN9K98

Hey Virgil, is that the Lindberger 1/20th Kit yu used. Looks cool, but may take time for me to get used to that face.
TurboKitty Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I've always wanted to build this concept from Rinspeed. It's called the "zaZen", and it has Swarovski crystals everywhere. Including being embedded in the self healing polyurethane clear coat, accenting the head and tail lights, and wheels. There are a lot of high tech materials used on it from the holographic clear top to the gel used in the seats. Some may not like the white and orange theme, but I love it and would love to either build it or see a kit of it become available: More pics and info here: http://www.rinspeed.com/pages/cars/zazen/pre-zazen.htm http://www.rinspeed.com/pages/cars/zazen/pre-zazen-fotos.htm
Dr. Cranky Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Richard, here's what Hollywood Jim (who build the model) used:
Dr. Cranky Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Let me see if I find a couple of pictures of a dirt track diorama Ken Hamilton built a few years ago, and which was also something I had never seen before. For a lot of builders it feels natural to always want to push the boundaries of what is possible. Dave T and Clay K have most certainly done that with Nascar subjects, and they've pushed the envelope on how high detailing can be taken . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Here you go, I found it. This is a Sprint Car race track (diorama) that Ken Hamilton built a few years back. As far as I know, nobody had tried to do a dramatic action scene like this before . . . You can check out the rest of the build here: http://public.fotki.com/khamilton/models/the_archives/sprint-car-diorama/ This was also the first time I realized that part of model building, part of the fun of it, pertains to taking photographs of your work and having fun with them.
57peppershaker Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I remember a Richard Petty NASCAR build very similar to that, years back. Even had gas flowing out the gas lines !
Jon Cole Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I would like to see a combination of a painting or pencil art, with a model. Such as a scene or landscape and a road, with the car adding a "3-D" effect.
Chuck Most Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I did that with a general lee, I used two pieces off of a metal rake and put half of them in dirt Yes, and I do remember that one. But the car is still visibly attached to the dirt berm it is jumping from. What I was thinking about was having the car completely clear of the ground, perhaps suspended on a mirror, or possibly with monofilament line.
Dr. Cranky Posted October 6, 2011 Author Posted October 6, 2011 Working windshield wipers, that would be so AMAZING, wouldn't it. I agree.
