Thanks to Ebay, I have become a proud owner of a Modelhaus '49 Cadillac Sedanette. Impressed again after a couple of disappointments, namely the 1965 Impala S/W, I thought it is a petty to use that primitive chassis and to glue the hood. The problem is, however, where to get an engine? One has to be a freak to have a hobby like car kit building, but I am not freak enough to sacrifice a Franklin Mint for the engine, a '53 Welly perhaps but not a FM.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

IIRC the AMT 49 Ford Coupe came with an optional Cadillac engine. You could probably also use the Revell parts pack Cadillac engine.

I'm pretty sure the AMT 49 Mercury and 59 El Camino have optional Cadillac engines too, but don't know what years they would be from.

The El Camino has a Cadillac engine with a 4 speed Hydramatic, I beleive it's a late '50s/early '60s version, possibly a 390. It doesn't have the integrated bellhousing that the earlier engines have. The Revell '49 Mercury may have a more appropriate Cadillac engine, I think it's the early version. The Parts Pack Cadillac should be fine, too. The engine from the Roth Outlaw could also be used, but the transmission will need to be changed. The intakes will have to be changed to a single 2 bbl, instead of the custom and factory 3x2 intakes found on the other engines.

Side note, the AMT '49 Mercury has a 413/427 Chrylser RB engine with the Short Ram intake.

The AMT '49 Merc has a 413 Chrysler engine. The Revell '49 Merc has a very nice early Cadillac engine.

Dan is 100% correct.

Ditto on the Caddy V8 in the Revell '49 Merc. And for a cool extra detail you might consider the super-nice Cadillac script valve covers from Replicas & Miniatures Co. of Maryland:

Any thoughts on what to use on the Caddy for a 2-bbl intake? Those seem pretty scarce in the modeling world.

Either that, or you could always do an "owner-mod" with the triple twos, which would still be pretty cool on an otherwise stock car. Does the Revell engine come with a 3-speed or Hydra-Matic?
