stewart Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 I am building this GNX from the Revell high-performance kit. The fender flares were in the kit, the hood is a resin piece of ebay. I have to grind off a brace in the under-hood compartment to get it to fit though. I am still trying to decide whether to paint the car flat black, semi-gloss, or gloss black. It has to be black though. These cars just don't look the same in any other color. I made the rear spoiler slightly larger with strip styrene and bondo. In order to fit the wheels and tires, I had to enlarge the rear wells. However, the design of the chassis made that rather hard so cut off the rear trunk pan and fuel tank and replaced it with my own modified one. I still need to add a fuel cell and the rest of the frame. Here is my progress so far on the frame. This is my wheel and tire package. I don't know where the wheels are from. I modified the rears to fit in 23" pegasus sleeves with perelli tires. STewart
Tonioseven Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 The design of the wheels are Corvette Z06 wheels. Not sure of the scale manufacturer. Nice project so far.
RodneyBad Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 My Vote is for Semi-gloss Black. Not too flat or too glossie. Hood and Flares look great. Fender flares where in the kit? like part of the kit?? Got to find me one of those.. Great looking cars.. Can't wait to see what ya do to this one.. Build on..
stewart Posted October 8, 2011 Author Posted October 8, 2011 Yes they are part of this kit. I was able to "rough in" the rear suspension and frame. Still needs some finish work. The axle and 4-link are from the Revell IMSA roush mustang. STewart
Moparkid13 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 looks like it's gonna be awesome.. I actually have one of these on it's way now, exact kit, so im definitely gonna be watchin this
Tony T Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Semi-gloss black, if you are looking for votes!! Looks good so far!
Eric Stone Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I vote glossy. The flares are in the kit because they're part of the real car- one of the small differences between the GNX and the regular Grand National.
BKcustoms Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I vote shiny And I cant wait to see what you do with this one!
W-409 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Gloss black of course, semigloss or matt black just doesn't fit. Nice project anyway, I'd like to see it with 15" wheels, but those aren't the worst ones, I've seen. Keep on the good work.
RodneyBad Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 looks like it's gonna be awesome.. I actually have one of these on it's way now, exact kit, so im definitely gonna be watchin this I do now.. Funny how a build thread can Influence shopping habits.. Great Reference pics too TonioSeven
stewart Posted October 9, 2011 Author Posted October 9, 2011 Thanks for the reference pics. Those are great. One problem I am going to have is the vents on the front quarter panels. The ones in the kit are just glue-on pieces that don't look that great. I tried using a dremel to cut out vents on a spare hood but it is really hard to do. I will have to come up with something. I got a little more done tonight. I finished up the rear frame. I now have to fit the rear axle and suspension setup in. I also need to construct a fuel cell. I didn't like the rear bench seat but I also did not want to remove it. The seat looked too dated and I want this to look like a nicely resto-modded GNX. I wanted to leave the rear seat in because I don't want this to be a race-only car despite the title . I took some extra buckets from an SRT, cut them up a little, and fit them into the back. Unfortunately, I had to cut away some of the seats to get them to fit around the rear tubs. Have to fix that somehow. STewart
fastram Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Looking great so far. My vote on paint is gloss black with the hood and half the roof semi gloss, or just from the body line up satin black and the sides gloss. Keep up the good work! You coming back to Cincy any time soon for a visit?
stewart Posted October 10, 2011 Author Posted October 10, 2011 I am thinking of doing some carbon fiber on the body. Don't know how much yet though. Here are some ideas I have. Gloss black with -a carbon fiber racing stripe up 1 side -carbon fiber hood -carbon fiber front splitter -carbon fiber on the duck tail spoiler -carbon fiber on the fender flares Just a few ideas. I am definitely going to do the front splitter and possibly the rear spoiler. I am leaning towards the single stripe up one side right now though. STewart
stewart Posted October 10, 2011 Author Posted October 10, 2011 Spoilers and flares definitely. Hood and trunk lid is a little too predicable though. \ STewart
Tonioseven Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Sure; I have this kit in my to-do pile so I may go with whatever you don't go with. Lol. Keep up the good work, I'm watching.
mytricia Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 ver very dark royal blue-definitely glossy-that's a no-brainer---great looking project! can't wait to see more.
stewart Posted October 11, 2011 Author Posted October 11, 2011 Thanks for the very helpful tip. I will check it out. I few more progress pics. Here is a sneak peak of the engine and turbo as well as the tranny. Switching out the stock for a 5-speed. I just have to find tubing big enough for it. I figured it would be a good idea to try to get some more cold air onto the intercooler and radiator so I carved out the rectangles in the front fascia where the turn signal lights go. I finished up the frame and made a fuel cell. I just need to pain the frame and chassis. STewart
stewart Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 Finished the intercooler up today. It is scratchbuilt. The extenders on the sides are to direct airflow coming in from the two intake holed I opened up in the front frascia. The dual fans are from a Revell dodge Viper kit. I also painted up the turbo, rear axle, and radiator. More of the intercooler STewart
