Jantrix Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I think I have the problem with the paint sticking to the straw. Most of it will have header wrap on it. I'll make sure to rough it up a bit before paint as well. Ken Maybe a coat of Future first?
kenb Posted November 11, 2011 Author Posted November 11, 2011 This is an update. Decided to design my own grill. Wanted something on the line of a 34 Ford. Took a few pieces of Rectangular evergreen strips and glued together in the shape that I wanted. Then sanded down to the right contour. I made the grill insert from piano wire. Right now it's all shiny, but will be weathered and dullcoated. Looking for some headlights to attach to either side. Now to make a radiator to go behind it. Ken
modelmarknz Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Wow ..... nice work , I had a go at build one like this a few years back , I used a peterbuilt cab , build mine like that video of Piss of pete,i think theres a pic in the rat rod file somewhere...Anyway.... Very cool build, Mark
Tony-442 Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 looks really good. Can't wait to see more. Tony
Jesse D Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 That bendy straw stack is the baddest a$$ Sack Idea I've ever seen. HUGE PROPS TO YOU SIR!!!!
Dr. Cranky Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Great to see you back with more progress. That scratch-built front grill is SWEET!
sweptline64 Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 wow this is looking amazing I'll be following this one.
plastikfreek Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Now that is totally cool............... Could you use a light coat of some sort of adhesion promoter like BullyDog on the straw..?...I've used that stuff painting the plastic engine covers on my 1:1 before, and it works great....I know some paints/primers are too "hot" for some plastics, but it's worth a shot...
MikeMc Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Use a lexan primer like adherto...it's clear and is used on RC shells painted with HOK
Chuck Most Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Always like seeing the progress on this. Love that grille!
route66modeler Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Hi, Great job on the cat 3406 engine(and the chassis too). Can't wait to see the completed truck. Steve
surfjunke Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Great WIP! I love the idea. The detail & scratch building is also great. Nice paint & weathering. This is one very cool truck.
kenb Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Well, it's been a while. Like I said before I build slow. Holidays and new grand baby slowed things down for a while. Now I have to go for double hernia surgery on valentines day, so that will slow me down again. I'm slowly but surely getting there. I've gotten pretty far, just scratched up a radiator. Will be putting an electric fan on the front of it after it is installed. Lots of small details left, like mirrors, wipers, brake lines, the rest of the steering gear, air lines etc. have to install the grill also, after radiator is completed. Here it is. All comments and criticism welcomed. I'm giving it my best. Ken
vwrabbit Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Love it! I remember seeing this somewhere a good while back. Great to see it again at this stage! Love the exhaust! How'd you get the paint to stick? And hope surgery goes w/o a hitch and congrats on the new grand baby! Tim
Dr. Cranky Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Ken, this one has turned out beautiful. You know what I'm going to say (Jim, cover your hears! ) LONG LIVE RUST!
kenb Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Been working on the radiator this morning. Good time to do it 21 degrees outside. I'm a firm believer in ading nut and bolt detail to make things more realistic. I think this comes from my many years as a model railroader. All you need is a piece of styrene rod. Just cut tiny pieces and glue in place to replicate fasteners. Makes for a much more detailed part. Here are a few pictures. Ken
Dr. Cranky Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Super realistic results . . . the fan is an aftermarket fan, right?
kenb Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 That fan came out of my spares box. When I go to model shows I'll sometimes I see these fellows with a box of odd part that some look at as junk. I can usually buy the whole lot for peanuts. Take it home and sort it out. I have storage containers with seperate compartments that I itemize everything in. Had about 15-20 fans to choose from. I have no idea of it's origin. I actually made the brackets from plastruct and the fan clutch is serving as the drive motor. Ken
zaina Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 very nice build! detail in all the right places
Rob McKee Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Ken, this is an awesome build. I love your use of the straws for exhaust! The seats are amazing as well.
kenb Posted February 13, 2012 Author Posted February 13, 2012 Andy, love that Caddy. Is that the Monogram kit? I've got a few of those in my stash waiting to be built. If they come out half as good as yours I'll be happy. Ken
kenb Posted February 18, 2012 Author Posted February 18, 2012 Recuperating from double hernia surgery on valentines day. I can get around and feel my best when seated, which is what I do at the workbench. Here are some new pictures of the Rat Rig. They might seem repititious, but if you look at them there are changes. I mounted the grill and weathered it. Added a bunch of details. There isn't too much more to go and then I will call it done. I have another crazy project that I started a while back that I have dug out. It's in line for assembly when this is done. Thanks for looking. Ken
Dr. Cranky Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Man, that looks beautiful. Great job. Hey, hope you are feeling better after the surgery.
