...the 1/16 Mercedes SS for the wheels (though I haven't mastered the assembly yet. Figuring it out makes my brain hurt).

It is bordering rocket science (I should know, I have a Doctor's degree in Physics). You will figure it out eventually and the nice thing is you can try over and over again until you get it right. It's like learning how to cycle. It seems impossible to master, but suddenly you got it and once you got the concept, it's a pip!

I needed half a day for the first wheel. The sixth one I made in less than five minutes.

If we broaden the scope of kits a bit to motorcycles I have to say the Tamiya Honda RC 166 6 cylinder GP bike is absolutely incredible especially with the Tamiya detail sets added. It builds well and looks absolutely fantastic. It was aaactually a dream come true for me. I have seen a lot of very high quality kits over the years but none hold a candle to this one. NONE! Not even my favorite little Tamiya Mini-Cooper.

I scrolled through both favorites and not so . Here's what I have built out of the bunch :

Revell 1929 Ford Model A Ford P U

Revell 1959 Ford Sunliner

Revell 1941 Willis Americar coupe

Revell 1966 Chevelle station wagon . Trailer was scratch built for George 53.

All things aside , only Trumiteer and the "OLD " I M C company have ever had issues with me .......... Ed Shaver

I am just going to go with the Tamiya Morris/Austin Mini Cooper 1275 S. I have built 5 of them so far and plan on about a dozen more. It falls together, looks fantastic, and takes up less shelfspace when done.

Agreed. I only have one that's about 3/4 done, but the only problem I have really had was a paint issue likely of my own creation.

This is just an obversation of mine. This thread has really gone to sleep but the one about the worst kits is still going strong even though it was started much earlier than this one. I guess we all like to complain more than we like to praise.:lol:

I'd have to go with Revell's '29 Model A pickup and '31 Tudor. Very accurate and highly detailed- and they were tooled, what, five decades ago?

Didn't the '29 roadster pickup issue in the '80s have the 5-hole "outlaw" wheels someone was looking for, for a 'Cuda project?

I liked the Crown MFG. Corvair V-8 conversion kit of the '70s. Did 2 of 'em! Sorry......couldn't resist! I'm really liking the Little Red Wagon kit. Also like the '60 Ford Starliner.

You're not thinking of the Monogram 1/24 scale '29 Ford Roadster Pickup kit, are you?

No sir! It was Revell 1/25 molded in red with typical '80s almost flourescent graphics. Only the 4-cyl. engine, but GREAT rims. I bought it for the rims, but never built it. Tsk,tsk.

I have always liked the 32 Ford kits. My favorite is the highboy. I could build that kit 100s of time and never get bored of it. There are so many posibilities with the MCG photoetch, colors, wheels and tires.

BEST kit I have built myself??? Moebius Hudson by a mile. The subject is great, fit is FANTASTIC and finished kit looks like a 1/1 Hudson....

The best-made kit I have is a 1/20 scale Nissan Leopard by Gunze Sangyo, of all things.

Even the wrinkles of the seat fabric are lovingly replicated.

Tamiya... F40, F50, Testarossa, Enzo, Aston Martin DBS.... Stuff it... Nearly every Tamiya kit beats any Revell/AMT/MPC kit ever released. Warranted they've not kitted Muscle/rods etc but I'm just basing my opinion on Tamiya quality Vs the rest. Here's an example... Revell has yet to get the 1970 'Cuda correct, after at least 3 attempts... Tamiya have never NOT got it right 1st time every time on any car they've kitted... 'nuff said.

Actually it's harder to pick which models are best as there are so many I really like. But it's easy to pick some that are just plain garbage.

Tamiya so messed up the Fiat 500D kit. Compare the vents...

Tamiya's try:

OMG! ;)

Tamiya is not perfect either, but, if one would have to say "who makes the best kits ever", it could very well be Tamiya.

As far as best kits...I think I already voted earlier in this post, like last year.

not so fast there Cliffo. Tamiya didn't get either one of the two Mustangs they did right, and i hear there are some accuracy issues with the Jeep Wrangler's too. Tamiya doesn't always get it right, but they do seem to always have very high quality kits. sometimes thier over simplification of things can be a bit questionable as well.

Mate I never purchased the Tamiya Mustang/Jeep orFiat kit's... So I was not aware of the deficiencies of those kits, my apologies. Over all though I don't think any other kit company can hold a candle to Tamiya... If any then Aoshima & Fujimi are closer than the U.S manufacturers.

Cheers Cliffo.

I was pretty much being really sarcastic - the Fiat kit is great. I agree, overall, Tamiya kits are the Bee's Knees.

I'm not aware of any accuracy problems with the Tamiya Wranglers all I can say about them is that the engine detail is very soft and the transfer case is a joke. If there are any problems it may be because they seem to be Euro spec Jeeps rather than US spec, I have noticed the side markers are different. Myself, I son't care how nice or accurate Tamyia kits are there is little subject matter that intrests me. In my collection I have somewhere over 600 kits only 4 of them are Tamyia. I can't say much for the other foreign kit makers, I have 2 Fujimi kits and 2 Italeri kits and thats about it. I'm not much for European cars and have zero intrest in Asian cars.
