Jantrix Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I have some holiday time off (paid )coming at the end of this year and my wife has to work through most of it, so I was kicking around the idea of doing a quickie build - one week. Which I have not done since I was a boy. I was thinking about a "nearly" box stock version of the AMT 41 Ford Woody. That being said, from the folks that have built this one before are there any inherent issues with the kit I should be aware before I try this? Fitment, mold issues, bad engineering? Thanks very much.
Jantrix Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 A quick Google search on this kit reveals very little aside from the fact that it seems to have a very high ride height. That is something I shall have to remedy.
Greg Pugh Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I always go to briansmodelcars.com if I'm looking for a review. I found this in under 2 minutes for you. http://www.briansmodelcars.com/reviews/review/358 I hope this helps.
Jantrix Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 Thanks. I had no idea those existed. I'll make those a favorite.
Junkman Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Only to paint the 'wood' would take me more than a week. No, month. No, year. Probably decade.
62rebel Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 i've built one as a British military LRDG car, it goes together very well and has superior interior detail similar to the Revell '48. there is a problem with the cowl appearing lower than the hood at the front; i don't think this is a kit engineering flaw so much as a problem with the body shell. there is a nice rendition of a Columbia 2-speed rear axle and it has some nice wheels and whitewall tires.
Guest Gramps-xrds Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I can't remember having any problems with it, but I built it 6 mo.s ago. I painted my wood instead of using the decals.
Jantrix Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 Thanks guys. I have an idea that doesn't involve wood so no worries there. Thanks for the advice.
Lunajammer Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Heh, heh, let me guess. Something like...
Chuck Most Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Disregarding painting the wood, ride height bugaboos are about the only issue I've ever had if you're starting with the stock version of the kit.
Greg Pugh Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Wow Bill, that's a good lookin' example there!!
robertw Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Built this kit a few years ago and had no major problems. For the wood work I used Humbrol #9 tan on the wood trim then a lighter wood colored paint for the inner panels. Using the kit wood grain decals as templates I cut new panels using DM Red Oak wood grain decal. I was happy with the results.
Jantrix Posted November 23, 2011 Author Posted November 23, 2011 Heh, heh, let me guess. Something like... Nope. To give you a hint, it'll be called a "steely" instead of a "woody". I've done some woodwork recently in some of my builds and want to do this a little bit differently. An industrial look. Disregarding painting the wood, ride height bugaboos are about the only issue I've ever had if you're starting with the stock version of the kit. This is the hot rod version Chuck. I'm still going to want to get it in the weeds though.
Greg Pugh Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Why can everybody paint wood except me? Don't feel bad. I can't either!
