horsepower Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Try Grandt line for the shackle bolts, you can get them in the model train section or from a store that specializes in train stuff.
eviltwincustoms Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Here's the slot rims i got coming for the front, and here is a picture of one of the rear spring shackle extensions i built, since you can see them hanging down in the back of the car, on some of the pics i got... i'll probably redo them in a slightly narrower material, so it looks more in scale. this one was more of a test one. any ideas on something to simulate a bolt for the rear shackles? Yep for bolts your best bet would be Scale Hardware, they have actual scale bolts or you can purchase the simulated ones that don't have threads. Other wise purchase Hex styrene cut to size for the bolt head and scale styrene rod weld together with Ambroid and make your own.
Shelbytona Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the tips! i couldn't find any grandt fasteners at the hobby shop so i took Barts's advice on the hex styrene, thanks! Here's a pic of one of the shackle extensions... i have to sand it a bit and then then straighten out the back part of the leaf springs to reach it's new position on the shackle. I don't want it sitting jacked up high (it's not in the pics very much either) the tires i'm using it will give it a slight rake as it is. Sorry for the crappy pic, my camera sucks under florescent lights. Edited January 6, 2012 by Shelbytona
Shelbytona Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 (edited) Here's the rear stripe trimmed around the trunk seam to add more realism (PITA to do!) and i blackwashed the seam as well... again sorry for the crappy pics Edited January 6, 2012 by Shelbytona
Gluhead Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Nice work. How's the stance mockup looking with the shackles?
Shelbytona Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Nice work. How's the stance mockup looking with the shackles? Thanks! I'll start mocking it up tomorrow, i've glued the diff to the springs and the shocks as well, so it will hold it at stock ride height.. i made the shackles tall enough to just stick past the lower quarter at eye level and the springs will be level from diff to the shackle (no backwards arch) any tips on taking the arch out or the springs? will hot water work best?
Car Crazy 81 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Thanks for all the compliments! Randy, Who makes those slotted wheels you have theyre awesome. Nice work on the Charger.
Casey Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Randy, Who makes those slotted wheels you have theyre awesome. Nice work on the Charger. PM forthcoming, Rick. Nice job on the bumblebee stripe, as cutting in when it crosses a body panel gap is a detail most people overlook...probably because it's a pain to do. It's nice to see a "normal" non-HIP color on a Mopar, too. Since you're going all out with the details, I would suggest you add some of that black wash to the drain holes on the frame rails, too, as those would be open on the 1:1 car and appear almost black. Your wheels will be on their way today, Randy.
jaydar Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Great car and build. Can you tell me how you did the red stripes on the tires? thanks, joe.

Thanks for the tip, i'll do that! after the chassis is finished i want to weather it a little bit. I picked up a Dukes Of Hazard rosco's police car model kit today, and the rims and tires were perfect for what i wanted! (the rim in the pic is a front one, i just used it for mockup, the rear ones are identical in width tho) since these tires are a little smaller in diameter then what i planned on using before, i jacked the back end up a bit... as close as what the real car looks like in the pics. I also narrowed the rear axle a bit to tuck the tires in because they were sticking out a bit. these rims and tires are almost a perfect match, i'm going to alclad chrome them. Shelbytona Posted January 7, 2012 Author Posted January 7, 2012 Great car and build. Can you tell me how you did the red stripes on the tires? thanks, joe. The model comes with redline and white wall waterslide decals, just be sure to have some decal setting solution, because once you slide them on the tire there not round anymore and you have to work with them to centre and straighten them.. they were a little tricky to get on there. I'm going to use those wheels on my next 69 GTX project.
Rob McKee Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 This just keeps getting better. Great job on the shakles and the RT stripe.
Shelbytona Posted January 7, 2012 Author Posted January 7, 2012 This just keeps getting better. Great job on the shakles and the RT stripe. Thanks! I'm happy with how its turning out as well... it's starting to look like its from the 70's now! . The only part that bothers me on the body is that small mold line on the bottom of the vinyl roof. It's actually not really noticeable in person, but my camera picks it up really good! I might go back and fix it later on, i was worried about sanding it off, since the vinyl roof texture was molded in.
Shelbytona Posted January 7, 2012 Author Posted January 7, 2012 (edited) I also picked up some strip styrene for rocker panel moldings.. I'll cut them like the original and BMF them and glue them on. Here are couple better pics of the real car. Edited January 7, 2012 by Shelbytona
Shelbytona Posted January 8, 2012 Author Posted January 8, 2012 I got the rear end and exhaust all painted and installed. I lightly weathered the chassis, blackwashed the frame holes (thanks for the tip!) and i alclad chromed the diff cover.
baloney Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 (edited) wow that's what i call a paint job! so nice seems like it's flowing on the car.. so nice i'm jealous! congrats for painting like this. just curious, with a well build kit like this.. why you didn't sand off the chrysler writing on the fuel tank? Thanks! i will sand it off and repaint the tank.. I guess it kinda looks out of place now that you mentioned it. I got the front suspension painted and detailed with steel and gold leaf to look like gold galvanized. Shocks are also done, but i can't assemble any of this until the car is almost built, so i'll be able to install the steering box.
Tonioseven Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 I'm enjoying this build so far!! It's getting me motivated to start a '68 I want to build! Thanks for sharing your progress on this one.
Shelbytona Posted January 10, 2012 Author Posted January 10, 2012 (edited) I'm enjoying this build so far!! It's getting me motivated to start a '68 I want to build! Thanks for sharing your progress on this one. Yeah i wanna do a 68 next! these models are very well put together and detailed... the only two problems i noticed so far.. the centre console locates where the front seats go and in that position its WAY to far back, it makes the front seats almost touch the back. To move the seats ahead i had to trim the seat bottoms for the hump on the floor, so the seats never sat on an angle. the interior lights need to be moved ahead as well, if you move the seats up. The other issue was the rear axle not centred to the wheel well. Console is all done.. BMF for the trim, wood grain done in tamiya nato brown and painted to give it a wood grain texture. the sides are flocked as well Edited January 12, 2012 by Shelbytona
Haubenschild Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 That interior is outstanding , you sure know how to build an awesome model!
Brutalform Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Can you say "EYE CANDY"....Top notch modeling here!!!
