Codi Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Now you went and did it Brad, you'll surely bring out the rivet counters now. Seriously though, I LIKE what you did. I've entertained it for the funny but it's cool to see it actually done. I'll have to give that some more thought considering how nice that turned out. Same aluminum as we discussed earlier right? ! cheers
gasser59 Posted August 3, 2016 Author Posted August 3, 2016 Thanks guys.No room in there Greg unless I tear off the gas tank and the aluminum panel that's riveted on.Tim - its the same stuff that we spoke about but a bit thicker. Its 0.012" which makes it a bit stiffer and perfect for this application.Trying to get more done tonight.
gasser59 Posted August 3, 2016 Author Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) Making the entire interior out of aluminum sheet is an experiment that I've wanted to try for some time. This build called for it since the kit one wouldn't fit. I think I cut this one too short so it may be a prototype. We'll see after another bench session or so. Edited August 4, 2016 by gasser59

gasser59 Posted August 4, 2016 Author Posted August 4, 2016 Thanks for the link Greg. As my thread title says...Late '60s...fits the NHRA rule book for the time period.
gasser59 Posted August 4, 2016 Author Posted August 4, 2016 A bit more work done the last couple of nights. The hump is just sitting there for the moment and will get glued in once a couple of straps with rivets are made to go over the top. The underside of the floor needs to be cut to fit this driveshaft tunnel and I plan on doing that before I glue it.
gasser59 Posted August 8, 2016 Author Posted August 8, 2016 Started work on the bomber seat and it still needs a bunch of work. This was my second attempt, the first got all out of proportion. Comments welcome.
10thumbs Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Hi Brad, looking very good and I'm happy to see you going this route. The riveting kicks butt, and will be absolute stunning when finished. I like.
Davewilly Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Hey Brad that Tub looks great! Where do you pick up your printing plate at...here in town...or do you order it? I am starting on one of these right now and I might try out your front axle on it. Keep up the great work! Its coming along nicely!
gasser59 Posted August 16, 2016 Author Posted August 16, 2016 Hi Dave - I get my printing plate from a couple of different shops. Each shop has different size presses so the plates differ in thickness. I can provide you some of each so you can get to work. Let me know when we can hook up.
gasser59 Posted August 17, 2016 Author Posted August 17, 2016 I've been spending my bench time on finishing up the interior tins and I wanted to share with you my progress. I needed to add another piece on the floor to cover the overlapping flap where the floor met the firewall. I've got the passenger side done and had to have the side panel come up and cover the gap along the bottom. I've also been working on the seat by making a couple of slots for the seat belts, which are just sitting there for now. I stole these from the original interior tub I had. The buckles are also printing plate. I also make a seat base out of the lighter gauge printing plate and punched holes in them. The drive shaft tunnel isn't glued in until I get the other side of the floor done. Here's a couple of pics.
Intmd8r Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 LOVE IT!Nothing beats the look of real metal. Wish I could do scaled metal work like this...
gasser59 Posted August 21, 2016 Author Posted August 21, 2016 More bench time since the last post and the interior is almost buttoned up. Still have the dash and steering wheel to do. Man is there a lot of tin in there. LOL
iBorg Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 A question and a suggestion. How are you cutting the metal? Are you using something like snips or heavy scissors and hen filing to shape? The seat and riser are quite impressive. Now for the suggestion....Scoring the lines in the door panels and adding a door pull or handle will add a lot to the interior. Overall, a wonderful job.
gasser59 Posted August 22, 2016 Author Posted August 22, 2016 Thanks Mike. I'm cutting the metal with a good heavy scissors and then sanding with finer and finer grades of sanding boards. I have plans to add a layer of the thinner aluminum plate on top of the sides where the doors would be and then add a door pull, just haven't got there yet. I appreciate your feedback and input.
Mooneyzs Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Brad... That is some mighty fine work on this interior. It's looking great!! any more progress on this bad boy??
bobthehobbyguy Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 Beautiful work on the interior. The aluminum panels look great.
noname Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 That interior looks great. Nothing better than metal to replicate metal. I was wondering how you do the rivets. They look real and scale correct.
gasser59 Posted September 23, 2016 Author Posted September 23, 2016 (edited) Thanks noname and Bob. The rivets on the driveshaft tunnel are actually only holes pushed in with a needle in my pin vice. No actual rivet. Some of the areas like the angled part of the firewall have rivets and those are from Scale Hardware which has since closed. Edited September 23, 2016 by gasser59
noname Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Thanks for that. The rivets are the best I've seen in this scale.
gasser59 Posted November 17, 2016 Author Posted November 17, 2016 You bet NoName. Thanks. I gotta get back to this soon. Its so close to being completed. Few small things here and there and then a simple paint job with some weathering is in store.
Codi Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 That looks sharp Brad. I wanted to also answer your question about the Bantam that missed answering somehow. I'm going to do a drop axle with shocks in front of the chassis. I have a single pic of a car setup that way and it looks pretty cool so I'll attempt to pull that off. cheers, tim
Mooneyzs Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Brad... you need to get back to the bench with this one
