Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 Come on, folks, some of you are old enough to have a picture or two with Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, no? Big Daddy was always attending cars shows all over the place.

moparmagiclives Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I worked 7 years in Indy Car as a corner worker and black flagger. This was between 1991 and 1997. It removed any hero worship I may have had. I've met Rick Mears (probably the only hero I have just because he is soooooooo nice), the Andretti's, Roger Penske, Paul Newman, Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Danny Sullivan, etc. Like any portion of the human race, you have some really nice people and some real jerks. The jerks ruin it for everything. I very rarely seek autographs from anyone. I'm a big baseball fan (Tigers) and I've met a few players including Al Kaline. The same holds true for them. I save my picture taking for being with friends or going to 'events'. I go to baseball games and I may get pictures of the players as part of the event, but I don't bother seeking out autographs afterward. When I was 15 or so, my uncle drove me down to a friends shop on salinas, I talked to the guy for a few min about my dreams and ambitions of custom paint and art work. I sat there for about 5 more mins of him telling me how there isn't any need for anymore painters out there and to find another hobby. That was the last time I ever cared to see or read anything about Rod Powell again. Every time I pull the tape off a car and hear someone ohh and Ahh....I hear that in the back of my head and just smile. Craig Fraser has a similar story in the begging of his first fx book, must be something about painters...who knows
Jon Cole Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I did shooters with the Pope, but nobody had a camera with them.
Harry P. Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I did shooters with the Pope, but nobody had a camera with them. You know the drill. No pix means it never happened...
Mercman Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Come on, folks, some of you are old enough to have a picture or two with Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, no? Big Daddy was always attending cars shows all over the place. Doc never got to meet him in person, however I did locate a old ARMY buddy of his for him. The guy lived 60 miles west of me here in Fargo. For my efforts I got one of hius T-Shirt catalogs, and a nice autographed letter from him. Also we talked on the phone for 1/2 hour or better. He was my inspiration to draw. I would copy his designs from the postage stamp size ads in HR mag, and make them bigger. I also have had the honor of meeting Jan Berry from Jan and Dean fame. I bought the first 2 tickets to a show he did here in Fargo back in the 80's. I gave him a button I had made saying "SURF'S UP". Also Roger Maris from the Yankee's was born here, I have his autograph, and have met him a couple of times. Great person very humble. As for pics with the celebs. These were taken at George's shop in Hollywood. Roth Catalog. I've also met Lou F. The Incredible Hulk, and saw Morgana the sports star groupie.
1320wayne Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Heres me with this famous guy in the modeling hobby. I think he runs a model magazine or something.
1320wayne Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 (edited) And my wife has always been a huge supporter of my hobby and love of drag racing that she naturally took an interest and discovered her own favorite personalities. This is her getting Gary Scelzi's autograph. And then her again the following year getting Scelzi to autograph a copy of the picture shown above. And her biggest thrill was to stumble across Grumpy wandering around an empty pit area so she walked in and asked to have a picture with him. Not the most cheerful guy in the world but I guess that's where you get a name like Grumpy. Edited February 4, 2012 by 1320wayne
Dave Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I met this guy last summer, Kyle Petty's father, pretty fun guy, seemed to know alot about racing himself, Been fortunate enough to meet quite a few famous types over the years. I've gotten to know several major league baseball players very well through some charitable work I do on occasion, a good friend from college played in the NBA for about 16 years and Junior Johnson doesn't live far and out and about quite abit. SO far by favorites have been Tommy Lasorda and Bobby Valentine, thats a picture I need to scan and get posted.
moparmagiclives Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Pamala Anderson is my second cousin ,, does that count. [no seriously] Are you from Montana ? If so i don't think it does, go for it dude !!!
Qwit Pushin Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Had the great fortune to meet Rich Guasco at the GoodGuys Pleasanton show this past August. Super nice guy, great story teller. Loved the story about how his dad found out he took his '29 Model A out street racing when he was a kid. When he arrived home his dad told him to pull it out back in the scrap yard. Rich's father told him he'd cut it up into pieces the next day. Rich decided to disassemble the Model A and scatter the parts throughout salvage yard until the heat blew over. A few weeks later he went out and recovered all the pieces and rebuilt the car that became the 1961 AMBR winner (Pictured) And of course we all know about his legendary 'Pure Hell' fuel-altered. Image below is a composite of a few shots including one of your's truly with the legend himself.
TurboKitty Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 (edited) the only person I've met that I guess can be considered a car builder is Steve Saleen. He was at the Detroit Auto Show a couple years ago, and he wasn't exactly a very talkable guy if you know what I mean. I think all the people around got him a bit irritated, because after a while he stayed behind his cars that were on display (he is in the black suit, I know it's hard to see him but there wasn't much room to see him. Sorry for the blurry picture but I only had my phone to take pics with at the time): Edited March 31, 2012 by TurboKitty

Danno Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 (edited) Take a peek at my avatar and throw a little of that jealousy my way, I got to drive it...sort of . Okay I got to steer while the crew pushed it to it's spot in the show. No pix ... ('Aw, c'mon, Dude, that ain't cool!') ... but I HAVE driven Rescue 51 ... the real, live Rescue 51. Didn't get to wind 'er up, though. * And don't get me started on people-celebrities. I've had a rich life. Edited February 4, 2012 by Danno
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 So that's what you do, Danno, every time the Big Kahuna sends you to your room, you sit there paging through your scrap book, reliving the memories!
