VW Dave Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 (edited) Does anybody happen to make a resin Schroeder steering gear unit in 1/24-1/25? I understand the Casey Luna sprint car kit has one, but I need several and don't want all those extra sprint car bits laying about. Thanks in advance for any advice or assistance. Here's a couple of the units I'm talking about in 1:1, in '32 Fords built by the Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop in nearby Greenfield Center NY:: Edited February 8, 2012 by VW Dave
VW Dave Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 And here's another I shot just this past weekend, at the 2012 'winter garage party' @ Rolling Bones:
dimaxion Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 It looks simple enough to scratch build or cast . I believe the mass quantity you are seeking would be hard to get . Thanx ..
VW Dave Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 (edited) Thanks, but the limited and sporadic time I have to build as of late makes me not wanna scratch it; all I really need is one, and I know a couple different casters who could turn that one into many. Thanks for the advice on the Revellogram sprinters too, Dave....over the years I only was after the tires from them. If no sooner, I'll scope out sprinters at the NNL East swap room(s) Edited February 8, 2012 by VW Dave
roadhawg Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Dave, I have one from a sprint car you can have, but it'll be a couple of weeks before I can get home and get it sent out.
george 53 Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Could you fake one by useing a 48th scale rear end?? Doesn't look like it'd be too hard to scratchbuild.
VW Dave Posted February 9, 2012 Author Posted February 9, 2012 Tommy - If you can spare the part, I'd really appreciate it...no rush at all, either. Drop me a line and lemme know what I can send in return. George - I might be able to scratchbuild or use a smaller-scale diff and mod it, but it would eat up a ton of my already limited bench time. I'm putting them in chopped hot rods, so I'd rather not spend too much time making them because they really aren't a focal point of the model.
shucky Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Dave, not sure how much of a hurry you are for this but I'll take a shot at making one the next time I'm at the modeling bench. If it turns out good I'll make some copies.
VW Dave Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 Dave, not sure how much of a hurry you are for this but I'll take a shot at making one the next time I'm at the modeling bench. If it turns out good I'll make some copies. I'm not in a huge rush, Mike....and I know you have a hard time making anything that's NOT impressive. If you can make one, I'd like to pre-order about 15-20 of the copies; my local model hot rodding buddy Matt T would for sure also be into them, and those would cover the both of us.
roadhawg Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 You're welcome, Dave. Glad you were able to use it.
doggie427 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Tommy, are you making resin copies of the Schroeder ? If so i'd like to buy some please . Thanks

horsepower Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 I know you have one of the new style Schroeder boxes and it's been years, but the new style boxes are a take off on a late model GM power steering box, the Schroeder you're looking for is the old style and they were patterned after a Ross steering box from the Crosley cars and international trucks, there is an excellent version of them in the midget kits that Revell released a little while back, or in a pinch you can even use a model A, or early Ford steering box with the side tubes made from tubing or styrene rod. We built a box for a real dirt modified in the late sixties from an early Chevy steering box and used the stock side cover and built an extension from tubing and cut the stock shaft to the Pittman arm and lengthened it out so we would still have the splined end, it worked perfectly. In fact in a recent Street Rodder magazine they printed an article on how to do the same exact thing using a Ford pickup box for use in a model A roadster that they wanted the old look steering in.
plastic-mechanic Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 http://www.bigdonkeyresin.com/big_donkey_web_site_030.htmpart SP-1 might work. Roy Royston used to cast one but he passed away. can't reember the name of his forum, but either pm dr. kerry or look around here http://fredsresinworkshop.com/forum/ and you might hit it.
mrindy77 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 I believe the unit in the Monogram sprint cars are all the same and they are KSE. They look similar but the are not a Schroeder. I've contemplated scratch building one and casting...if that comes to fruition I will post here.
