Fabrux Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Is there anyone other than Dencon that makes Grand Prix pieces to convert a '62 Catalina? I found reference on this board of Dencon producing the grille, but there was some argument about it in the thread and he mentioned discontinuing it... at any rate, the website is down and his Twitter account hasn't seen activity in almost a year... I found a conversion kit on eBay ONCE and I'm kicking myself for not snagging it. I think it had both the grille and taillight trim pieces. I figure if anyone knows where to find this, this board will!
a/gass Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 ill have to check the spelling but arrow head racing has it for $10.00 +shipping?i still need a few too along with 63's.
imatt88 Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I would love to pick up a GP conversion. I have two Catalinas and would love to convert one. How do I get one of those? Cheers, Ian

Mike Kucaba Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Get the conversion from Shawn Carpenter. Look him up on Google. I don't believe he has a website.
a/gass Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 (edited) well my link dont seem to work?so googel arrowhead componets should be first on list then go to hobbie Edited February 11, 2012 by a/gass
Fabrux Posted February 11, 2012 Author Posted February 11, 2012 a/gass: here's the corrected link: http://www.arrowheadcomponentsinc.com/aciproducts/resinhobbyitems.html Arrowhead has just the grille, tail panel, and door emblems and it looks like Shawn Carpenter has those plus body, door panels, seats, console and 8-lug wheels. I didn't realize the Grand Prix's body was that different from the Catalina?
montelsc Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) Did the grandprix come in a 62 i thought they came out in 64?? How about a 76 NOW THATS WHAT WE NEED!!!!! Edited February 12, 2012 by montelsc
Dan Helferich Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 You will not be disappointed with anything Shawn Carpenter produces. I have 2 of his conversions and I want the Grand Prix!
dimaxion Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Get the conversion from Shawn Carpenter. Look him up on Google. I don't believe he has a website. <rocketfin.com> , scroll down to model car links . Right click and find Shawn Carpenter and right click . All are listed alphabetically . His stuff is great . No dissappointment on service and quality . Thanx ..

I didn't realize the Grand Prix's body was that different from the Catalina? The Grand Prix was a sedan'd roofed Catalina. The Cat had that beautiful "Bubble roof" and the Grand Prix had the standart two door "Formal" rear roofline. YES, they were two different rooflines on the same shorter(than a Bonneyville)body.

The bubble roof was '61, the '62 Catalina 2dr ht roofline is same as the Grand Prix. '63 is when the Grand Prix got it's own unique roofline... Edited February 13, 2012 by Rob Hall
george 53 Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 No. The 62 has the "Formal" roofline. NO Grand Prix's had the "Bubble" roofline of the Catalina. It wasn't offered.
Fabrux Posted February 13, 2012 Author Posted February 13, 2012 So the AMT '62 Catalina body is accurate with its roofline? Or is there a different roof?
montelsc Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Found one and its the 62 catalina roof not the bubble top i like this never knew they made one in 62
Rob Hall Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 The '62 Catalina and '62 Gran Prix have the same roof. In '63 the Grand Prix had a roof it shared with the Oldsmobile Starfire and Jetstar I, but no other Pontiacs. Why can't you people look this stuff up? The lack of automotive knowledge on model car boards is mystifying. And you don't get bonus points for proving you don't know what you are talking about by posting a wrong answer. Probably younger people that don't know these details. Though such information is readily available on the internet and in the literature.
Rob Hall Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 No. The 62 has the "Formal" roofline. NO Grand Prix's had the "Bubble" roofline of the Catalina. It wasn't offered. You are wrong. Look it up.
MrObsessive Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 To solve this issue, you guys can check here and here about the Pontiac "bubbletops" for 1962.............
MrObsessive Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Here's another story about the fabled Pontiac Catalina "Bubbletop". There were actually NO bubbletops produced by Pontiac for '62. That roofline was reserved for the B-Body Chevy Bel Air hardtops as GM wanted to move the rest of the GM lineup in a different direction. Check this story to see................
Fabrux Posted February 14, 2012 Author Posted February 14, 2012 Now, I had noticed that the Grand Prix's roof was pretty close to the Catalina in pictures I've seen but I wasn't sure since the resin conversion has a body included. But that's because of the side trim from what I can see.
Rob Hall Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 The '61 roof looks good on the '62 body..I have the JF resin body to do one eventually w/ the AMT '62 Catalina..
george 53 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 You are wrong. Look it up. Ok, your right, but there STILL was NO Grand Prix built with a bubbleroofline. I'm NOT wrong about that.
Rob Hall Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 (edited) Ok, your right, but there STILL was NO Grand Prix built with a bubbleroofline. I'm NOT wrong about that. No one said there was. Edited February 14, 2012 by Rob Hall
montelsc Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I enjoyed this topic so much that i purchased the 62 catalina kit yesterday and also trying to order the grand prix nose and tail assy from arrowhead comp.this is going to be my next project
Mike Kucaba Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Here's what inspired me to do the model that Flintstone eventually cast: http://www.carnut.com/show/99/all/all132.jpg That and the article in Car Model (the annual, not the regular monthly) I'd sure like to see ONE built,as I never finished mine but did get a good start on one of the resin copies.
