jjsipes Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 (edited) Looks like I will be needed to dig through my pile of unbuilt kits to find an AMT Roadrunner or GTX for a donor chassis. This is my latest score off of Ebay. Never had one before and I am thrilled to have it now. It did come with the wrong decals (I believe they are from the 64 Petty Plymouth kit not this one) but, thats ok as the decals probaly wouldn't be any good anyways. It apears that a few parts may be missing but, once again thats ok since the parts I am interested in are there. Can't wait til I get time to build it (if only I could talk my wife into taking care of our daughter for a few weeks by herself, ha ha). Edited February 22, 2012 by jjsipes
2000-cvpi Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Nice score. I really like that kit and I don't normally build NASCAR's.
bbowser Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Nice score, hope you didn't pay through the nose for it. Look forward to seeing it in progress or finished (hopefully both).
jjsipes Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 (edited) Pick up an AMT 69 Plymouth GTX last night for a good donor chassis. The Johan kit chassis has everything molded to it, exhaust, rear axle and springs and the front suspension as well. I was looking for omething that has a little more detail hence the AMT chassis. Will build the rollcage directily on the chassis as well. Edited February 25, 2012 by jjsipes
Slim Louis Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Good luck with it, I will be watching closely! I have mated a 64 Dodge to a Lindberg chassis and plan on doing this same build, with the same AMT chassis.
1zebra3 Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I have several of this kits and would like to build the petty bird so I will be watching this build.
dh85ss Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I have 4 built ones in my collection and some parts in my garage i need to find , seats, motors, int buckets and i think a chassis if anyone needs some parts pm me and i will look for them
Funkster Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I need a wing for mine as it got lost over the years.

jjsipes Posted February 29, 2012 Author Posted February 29, 2012 The 69 GTX Chassis will fit the superbird? Yes it will. Have started to work on it a little and it appears as if the wheelbase is perfect from the AMT GTX/Roadrunner to the Johan Superbird. Width is great as well. Need to do a little more before posting any pics.
dh85ss Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 just saw one of these BIRDS go for $26.00 plus s&h on e-bay yesterday little too much for me.
jjsipes Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 Heres another Ebay score that I recievec this week. I got 2 Richard Petty 1971 Roadrunner builts that I will strip and rebuild. They are missing a few pieces and a few are broken but it's a cheaper way then to pay the price for unbuilts. The nice thing is that the bodies are not painted, they were left in the blue that they were molded in. The other one does have the red painted on it for the STP colors but I will strip it.
Truck parts Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Looking good guys, and thanks about the information on the wheelbase.
route66modeler Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 hi, i think the old mpc southern stocker pontiac, buick and mc kits use some of the same susp parts your petty r/r uses. steve
RancheroSteve Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 (edited) Has anyone tried dropping this body over the Polar Lights (Buddy Baker) Dodge Charger chassis? Edited March 22, 2012 by RancheroSteve
MAGNUM4342 Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Has anyone tried dropping this body over the Polar Lights (Buddy Baker) Dodge Charger chassis? Doesn't fit. I would use many of the cage components to build one of these cars but in no way would I ever use the horrid Polar Lights chassis.
tomwal Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Hi! I bought this model on ebay from USA. The wheels were too small, the decals were dust and the wheelopenings where wrong, but it is a SUPERBIRD. It also stand much too tall in the front. I grinded away the exhaust, fixed the wheelopenings, added details to the suspension, made a quickfilleropening and detailed the engineroom and interior. Ihavn´t put on the sponsordecals yet because I want that "right out of the store"-look. I built the daytona back in 1971 out of an MPC box. That one was for real and I built i right out of the box. Now I become happy every time I look at those two "winged Wonders".
