Mike Kucaba Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 This has been an interesting thread and it looks like a great compendium of information could be gleaned from it. I'd like to see where the various 250 GTO's that have been kitted over the years rate as to accuracy and what cars built from the box could be done. For instance, the Testor's/Italeri kit. What chassis number does this represent, how accurate is the body, and what could be done to accurize it. This could be done for the various other kits out there. Sounds like a lot of work, but might work up into a good magazine article? Maybe Huh Huh.
johnwitzke Posted July 18, 2012 Author Posted July 18, 2012 Do you know if 250 GTOs originally had headliners installed? I am not 100 percent sure on the headliner. Here is a photo of chassis 3505. Photos that I have seen of other GTO's it appears there wasn't a headliner. But I could be wrong.
johnwitzke Posted July 18, 2012 Author Posted July 18, 2012 (edited) Mike, With the exception of MFH who made different versions (although, my kit of chassis 3729 has the oil filler door on the right side and should be on the left side for this particular a right-hand drive version), most other kit manufactures seem to have taken the most common GTO design ques and produced a model. I believe that the Fujimi kit best represents chassis 3757, 4115, 4153, 4219, and a few others . Best advice is to research a chassis and modify one of the existing kits to resemble the real car. There were 32 1962-3 series 1 250 GTO's produced, one 330 LM GTO (chassis 4713), and another three series II cars during 1964. Edited July 18, 2012 by johnwitzke
Mike Kucaba Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 What or where are some good sources for this info, especially book form. I do remember that MRRN did some reference on these cars(I think). I have this Mag in digital form so I'll be looking at that. Thank you for your reply.
johnwitzke Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 I very good book is Ferrari 250 GTO - The History of a Legend by Anthony Pritchard. Publisher is Haynes. Looks at the 1962-64 racing history plus a detail of each chassis. I do a lot of reseach online too.
johnwitzke Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 (edited) Progress has been slow on building Chassis 3505. Other than the extensive rework of the body, here is an update on some of the parts I have been working on. The right hand dash and floor extension is from Historic Racing Miniatures. The door panels are photo etch parts from Hobby Design. Each of the rivets had to be drilled and set. Edited December 24, 2012 by johnwitzke
johnwitzke Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 (edited) Working slowly on this one. Engine is nearing completion. Next will be the chassis and wheels. Edited January 28, 2013 by johnwitzke
89AKurt Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 I have 4 different kits of this car, the Gunze, Italeri, Fujimi, and Protar. Now I know Revell also made one, but I bet it's not as good, but I still got detail parts yesterday designed for that kit. I'm coming back to read everything......

I believe the Revell one IS the Protar reissued.
