How Do I Widen Fenders

I want to widen the rear fenders on my 1965 Chevy Stepside. The problem is the way they are shaped Would probably make it hard. I thought about making th fenders straight sided. Any suggestions?

Hi there just thought I'd give you some advice here .If you cut the fenders in half with a saw or sorts and add some flat styrene pieces between the 2 halfs of the fender you'll get the width your wanting plus use some filler to do the finishing touches.Hope that helps.

I agree with George. This is a 32 Ford I widened that way and you can see in this pic how it was done. ... The idea would be the same o a step side fender.

Are the rear fenders in that kit seperate from the bed sides? If they are all you have to do is add some plastic strip to the inside egde of the fender where it meets the bed side and sand it to match the curve of the fender.

I think the best way would be to try and find a second set of fenders. On one set cut a wide section. Cut the second set as a narrow section, maybe just less than a 1/4 of the width of the original and mate those back together to create your widen fenders.

I don't know how close the kit parts are in size but the fenders used on the 1:1 55/57 Chevy Pickup are the same design as the sixties up until 1967. You might be able to find separate fenders from the AMT kits of the 55/57 stepsides that would eliminate have to remove the fender from the bedside, and they should be easier to find than the Revell fenders.

Great tip Steve,

but I think what the issue he is wanting to address is the character line that wraps around the fender at the top. If he is not confident in his skills he may be apprehensive about sanding the flat styrene to match the kit fender.

BTW, Thanks for sharing 'cause I want to widen a set of rear fenders for an upcoming '70 Chevy project!

Yea Glenn that's what I meant. I know I could do it but It would look awkward if I used putty. I have thought about making the fenders straight and not have that line.

Another method to widen fenders, or to create custom flares, is to glue .010" strip styrene to the inner edges of the wheel openings, letting it extend outward as wide as you want your flares to be.....

Then simply fill and sculpt to the final contours you want......
