Chuck Most Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Got this AMT/Ertl promo from Mr. Rodney Badger, and decided to have a little fun with it. I've long toyed with the idea of sliding a Revell J2000 chassis under one of these, but don't have one of those kits handy. But I still thought I do a Pro Street/drag Storm as a curbside anyway. So this model will represent a weekend drag racer converted to rwd and V8 powered, or maybe we can pretend it still has the stock FWD drivetrain, and somebody just put a stick axle and big tires out back and slapped a scoop on it to mess with people. I've wanted to do something like that in 1:1 since forever, but that would be a bit too much money and effort just for a joke! Anyway, here's where things stand as of now- The scoop is from an AMT '66 Nova Pro Street- filed down a bit to fit the Geo's hood. I also lowered the car in front by drilling the axle holes up higher, and cutting away the tops of the molded-in fender liners to clear the tires. The entire rear third or so of the chassis plate is gone, and I cut away everything in the interior tub from the backs of the inner door panels rearward, but I left the upper perimeter intact to retain the snap tab that fits into a slot behind the rear bumper, and so the glass unit would still have something to sit against. The hood pins are from Detail master. I am not sure if I'll radius the rear wheel openings yet, but depending on how low the rear of the car will sit it might be mandatory, then it will only be a matter of how much. Other than the hood and the possible reworked rear quarter panels, I am also leaving it the stock color. Not sure at this point if I'll bother with an interior or just spray the inside of the tinted glass unit black (this making it a true 'slammer') and not worry about it. Guess we'll see.
Bartster Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Love it!! looks like a great slump breaker, lol. l should consider doing something like this!! Thanks for the inspiration. Bart.
Intmd8r Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I love this idea. Anyone who's ever rode in a Geo Storm knows that therer isn't enogh room for two adults, let alone a V8 conversion . I look forward to seing more as I love the originality of this build and had no idea a Geo kit even existed.
Chuck Most Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 Decided to black out the window unit, and radiused the rear wheel openings.
Draggon Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Hey Chuck, in the 80's there was a feature in Car Craft or Hot Rod mag on a front driver converted just like you were thinking. Still front drive, but with a tubbed back end and huge tires.
RodneyBad Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Looks a lot better already. Rear wheel wells look soo much better.. Exhaust like MadMax? Zoomies? Bring on Storm..
Casey Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Exhaust like MadMax? Zoomies? That's the one I was thinking of which was in Hot Rod or PHR in the early '90s. Nothing says late '80s/early '90s Pro Street exhaust like a set of Supertrapp "disc" mufflers.
RodneyBad Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Well I think this was too Easy for the MadMan.. I think I can come up with more challenges for him...
mikelo Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Well, I can't see any pics here at work, but I know it can be done and look good too. Here is my buddy Sean's he did a while ago. It is a slammer though. http://www.svensworldofwheels.com/geopage.html Mike
Guest Darkside Customs Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Chuck, you are a sick, sick individual... Can't wait to see more
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Another entertaining build, Chuck. I've got one of these I've been thinking of bashing into a Metro, then building it as a tuner with Honda or MR2 guts, mid-engined.
Chuck Most Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 Nothing says late '80s/early '90s Pro Street exhaust like a set of Supertrapp "disc" mufflers. Same thing I'm thinking, and I KNOW I've got a few sets of those laying around. Another entertaining build, Chuck. I've got one of these I've been thinking of bashing into a Metro, then building it as a tuner with Honda or MR2 guts, mid-engined. For a Metro, you might want to locate a Suzuki Swift (I think I've seen a few of those as kits- Fujimi, maybe?), as the Storm was Isuzu-based. Doing one as a mid-engine tuner would be very cool though, no matter which kit you started with.

I'm aware of the parentage of the Geos and as far as I know no appropriate Metro or Suzuki Swift kits are available. I'm wanting to do the gen one. The body lines of the Storm are close enough to make a decent starting point for a Metro, and someone has already done the conversion and made resin copies. I've been unable to find one, or any other first gen Metro, though I've been looking off and on for several years. I did come across a reference to modelmartin who is a member here having used one of the resin converts to do an altered drag car. It's a perfect team mate for your build. http://www.teamswift.net/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=47437
mountaindewd Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 (edited) Neat idea, Chuck. I have always liked the idea of miniature slammers. I have a CRX w/a modified Coronet chassis I started about 12 or so years ago that never got fully finished. As far as 1:1, I always wanted to do this with a 70's Honda Civic 2 door Edited July 28, 2012 by mountaindewd
Casey Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Joel Dirnberger(sp?) from MN was the person who mastered the Geo Metro in '90 or so, and he may have cast them himself, too.
mini trucker Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 ^^ i believe his was a convertable if memory serves me right
