Agent G Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 No one's going to lose their job over this, but it will strain the county budget to the limit. Fleet and salary are the two largest budget items in any police agency. There's no telling what police equipment is salvageable as well. Lights, sirens and radios aren't cheap, and laptops, if equipped, are very expensive. The actual car is the easiest to replace, it just takes $$. I'm surprised they only estimated $250,000 in damages. G
Harry P. Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I'm surprised they only estimated $250,000 in damages. G From the newspaper story: (Sheriff Kirk) Martin estimated damage to the vehicles at more than $300,000. Not only were their roofs and hoods caved in, 'the radios are ruined, the radar detectors, the cages in the cars... We're going to have to get the jaws of life up here to pry the trunks open and see about the rifles and shotguns,' Martin said.
Agent G Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) That estimate also sounds a bit low. Wow, MoRon did some damage didn't he? Now think about this, who's patrolling the county? State troopers? Sure, all one of them per shift, If that. When they aren't on the freeway. G Edited August 6, 2012 by Agent G
Danno Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 That estimate also sounds a bit low. Wow, MoRon did some damage didn't he? Now think about this, who's patrolling the county? State troopers? Sure, all one of them per shift, If that. When they aren't on the freeway. G Hey, Showgurlzguy, I saw in at least one report that several other agencies were loaning spare patrol cars to the county to use until they could get permanent replacements up and running. Now there's a thought for you ... Mabel hasn't heard about all this hub-bub but she calls the Orleans County Sheriff ~ ~ ~ and a Sheriff's car from two or three counties away pulls up in front of her house! Might double their contact time on calls for service as they have to explain where they got the car ...
Agent G Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Now that would be akward. "Ya'll steal that car?" G
Danno Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 There you go! Hey, buddy. Ain't you a lonnnng way from your donut shop?
niteowl7710 Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Well once the "windfall" comes in from the insurance payout, lots of decisions to be made. Stick with the Ford and their new Taurus Interceptor, or go to Chevy or Dodge. Might as well consider a redesign of the graphics too since you have a blank slate of your entire fleet to work with...
Agent G Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 You have a point. New CVPI's aren't available any longer, so what will they buy.............................. Heck it took us 30 years to change graphics the last time. G
Harry P. Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Actually only 7 of the fleet of 11 were wrecked, so they have 4 left. My guess is they match whatever they still have.
Funkster Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Now thats one way to get rid of them slow Fords, and buy 7 of the new Dodge Charger squad cars. (lol)
Jon Cole Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I read that the officers didn't hear anything, as it was a hot, humid day, and the window mount A/C units were humming away in the station.
Harry P. Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 The "official" story on that is that the building used to be a bank, and the vault is still in there... and the vault deadened the noise outside. Kinda hard to figure, though... the vault is only in a certain portion of the building, the rest is just regular construction. Something in that story isn't kosher.
martinfan5 Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 Do spike strips work on tractor tires? I am sure they might work a little bit, but in order for them to use the spike strips, oh I dont know, I think the officers would have to be OUTSIDE first so they could use them I read that the officers didn't hear anything, as it was a hot, humid day, and the window mount A/C units were humming away in the station. The police station is in a old bank building
niteowl7710 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Actually only 7 of the fleet of 11 were wrecked, so they have 4 left. My guess is they match whatever they still have. As pointed out above by Wayne, they ceased production of the Crown Victoria back in 2011, so unless they intentionally buy used vehicles, it's impossible to match them to the fleet exactly. Any "spare set" of vinyl will not fit any of the current platforms. Existing graphics might be made to fit the new Taurus, but heck if you're that far into a graphics program, might as well start from scratch.
Longbox55 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 It would depend on just how big the spikes were. Considering that the lugs on an average tractor tire are about 2" thick or so, plus another 1/2" give or take of tire carcass after that, the spikes would have the be pretty tall and very stout to actually punture the tire.

Depending on where the city/county gets there vehicle's from, they still could get more CVPI's, just because Ford stopped making them, does not mean that they can not still be bought. A lot of states/county/citys have been stock piling them, so it just all depends if there are any CVPI in fleet inventory
Agent G Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Spike strips are not designed for this. Cars and trucks yes, big azz tractors, no. Jonathan, LV Metro has stockpiled CV's for about a year now and they realized it was a mistake. They now believe it would have been better to change the fleet early on, financially speaking. NHP bought a bunch of Fords late in the production run, and changed the graphics again. They were phasing Chargers into the fleet, and saw a chance to amend the graphics. It will be the third time in the 5 years I've lived here that the cars have new markings. Funny thing is though, they went back to the future with the same old star and diagonal stripes like decades ago. G

Wonder if Orleans County can get some nice new CVs from LVPD at an advantageous price? While I certainly wouldn't have expected the deputies to be standing around on guard detail or pulling other gross over-reactive acts, that this was allowed to happen, to me, anyway, just smacks of lackadaisical. That's something, if I was the Sheriff, I don't think I could deal with well. A/C units, vaults, etc., at least to my way of thinking wouldn't muffle a big, loud tractor and seven cars getting turned into skate-boards. Charlie Larkin

Charlie Larkin Having seen a few police policy manuals in my time let me assure you there is no section covering "Attack by Tractor"...
Agent G Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Wow, That must be up north, because I've never seen anything but a Ford Crown Victoria or Dodge Charger down here. Northern Nevada drove Chargers as early as '07, and rode BMW motorcycles. Down south it's Fords and Harleys. Those are the "new" graphics though. G
Casey Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Having seen a few police policy manuals in my time let me assure you there is no section covering "Attack by Tractor"... I'm sure I'm not the only person who thought of the movie "Tank" starring James Garner(?) when I read this article.
Agent G Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I was actually reminded of the San Diego incident where the culprit used a tank stolen from the National Guard. The PD called the Marines at Camp Pendleton for asistance, as they had no way to stop an M60. The whole incident ended before the Jarheads could get to town with anti tank weapons. Thank Goodness. The other one that comes to mind is the farmer in Kansas who welded plates to his bulldozer and went ape poop in town. They filled the now armored cabin with gas and he finally stopped. Every now and then something occurrs that just scares the heck out of ya. G

The Taurus PI was at the funeral for the Utah Highway Patrol Trooper who passed away after falling to his death during a SAR operation near SLC, so yeah I would guess that's an I-80 corridor NHP unit.
charlie8575 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Having seen a few police policy manuals in my time let me assure you there is no section covering "Attack by Tractor"... I can see it now...."For when the locals goes loco and resort to the strangest things." Charlie Larkin
