retroguy Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I've been using micro sol and no complaints,I saw testors and badger offer setting solutions. what do you guys use/why...
TooOld Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I've been using Testors with no problems . Mainly because my LHS had it when I was looking , and I buy as much as I can from him !
cobraman Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I use Solvaset. Have used it for many, many years. Works good for me.
Mike Kucaba Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I use a few of the commercial solutions, but made some using distilled water and vinegar.
bryan_m Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I use Solvaset. Have used it for many, many years. Works good for me. same here. solvaset works very well..... bryan
jcbigpaw Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I've used Model Masters Decal Set with great results. I just finished a GT350H Shelby and was really apprehensive about the hood stripes over the scoop but had very little problem.
The70judgeman Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I use Solvaset. Have used it for many, many years. Works good for me. That's what I use. Settles the decals in all the nooks and crannies. never heard of it,from where... You can get it through Walther's in Milwaukee, or a lot of hobby stores will carry it. Usually in the paint section.
blueoval92 Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 excuse me for asking this but what is the purpose of a setting solution? i have never used them and just plainly dont know what they do.
crazyjim Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 The solutions make a decal softer and conform to contours better.
blueoval92 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 ahh ok, does it do anything for helping them stick better?
crazyjim Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I don't use many decals, but when I do, they seem to lay flatter and better after using the solution(s). I've never done a test with and without the solution so I don't really know if they stick better.
Deathgoblin Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 ahh ok, does it do anything for helping them stick better? I was doing a set of custom decals for the Enterprise and the set came with instructions to use a solution of a couple of drops of white glue in water to help stick them down. I painted the white glue/water solution down first, then placed the decal, then painted with solvaset. The decals went on like a dream. You might try something similar.
blueoval92 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 im guessing that the color of the glue is thinned out to nothing when mixed with the water? also will the solvaset or any other solutions mess with clear coat?
MoparWoman Jamie Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 From what I gather of the stuff, the stuff is used on model cars that has a clear coat on them. The solution melts the decal down into the clear to a point where it makes the decal looks painted on. Once you apply the solution on the decal, don't at all touch the decal, as the decal will be that soft until everything has harden up (24 hours later mostly is good to touch the model).

Typically, white glues like Elmers dry clear, especially thinned as it would be in this case.
