I saw a new Chevy as a state police cruiser the other day and I didn't get close enough to notice what the car model is. I have never seen this car before though. I caught the front end with the bowtie and the rear lights that look like current Impalas. Anyone know what these are?

Nevermind, I found it...guess I had to refine my search

This new purpose built police car is similar to the old Pontiac G8 sedan from several years ago. Not sure if the public will be able to buy these new, maybe at an auction in 3-4 years!

The Caprice PPV has been around for a year or so..I've seen a few around. It's a variation of the long wheelbase Holden Caprice/Statesman, different roofline and rear 3/4 styling than the short wheelbase G8/Commodore The Commodore will be coming back to NA in updated form next year as the Chevy SS.

Although not offered to the general public new, I have seen a few brand new ones for sale on ebay. Or, you can wait till they come to the police auctions in a few years.

One dealer decided to buck GM and sell them to the public. GM caught the mistake so only 13 will be able to be sold to the public but GM made sure all future contracts read "not for public sale". So looks like the only way is to wait for the worn out ones to be retired from the police, fire and military.

I know initially they were going to have it so they all would have to be returned to GM at end of service but evidently that idea was not really feasable.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Unions had something to do with them not being sold to the public here unless they were produced here.

I doubt it..GM has sold many non-NA built models here before and will continue to (the Aveo, Catera, '04-06 GTO, G8, the current Regal (first year of them were built in Germany), the upcoming Chevy SS. etc). Probably more of a marketing decision...didn't want it eating into Impala sales.

I have driven the police version, and it is nothing short of a race car. Dare I say one of the nicest, tightest, best handling cars I've ever driven. And horrendously fast.

The Police Dept. here cancelled their Chevy order after 10 months and went to Dodge! Had them in less than two months!

Been hearing this same story from all over the country!

We looked at them for my agency. NHP loaned us a test car and we had some fun at the speedway. The bosses opted for the less powerful "admin" packages, but the state bean counters lost their minds even at that. Oh well.

Maybe, but boring as heck in the looks dept.

Nothing a Big Ole shopping cart wing can't fix.   Seriously though. If they aren't releasing this thing to the public, maybe there is something else in a four door rear wheel drive in the works.

The Chevy SS is coming..basically an updated G8.

The Chevy SS is sharing the Zeta platform that the Caprice PPV does, the new Chevy SS will basicly be the civilian version of the Caprice, shorter wheel base. The Chevy SS will be replacing the Impala in NASCAR Cup series

That looks one heck of a lot like a Malibu

Nope...this is a serious RWD car w/ a V8...the Malibu is a FWD 4cyl rental car.

It has some styling cues from the Malibu, which I can see them, dont care for the look to be honest, but like that its a RWD car

Similar headlights, but the proportions are completely different...in profile, it's basically the G8 with a new nose and tail.
