southpier Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 anyone have a good way to make a radiator core more detailed than kit supplied? top & bottom metalwork doesn't seem too difficult, but in between is no man's land. i've thought about wrapping screen around a plug, and have seen model railroaders drill stacked styrene strips and slide wire through, but thought there must be a better way. something i've never seen in aftermarket parts. thanks
Brian_B Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) I am not sure if this is what you mean.. http://protechmodelparts.com/carpartscatalog.htm part number: PTMC 8 Edited August 21, 2012 by Brian_B
southpier Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 exactly. now how do i get the screen to lay flat?
Brian_B Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 No clue at all. I just did a search on here and found a link to the mesh. Sorry.
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Instead of wire mesh, this is photo-etched specifically for radiator faces. There are other suppliers, and it lays flat. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10164574
Art Anderson Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 anyone have a good way to make a radiator core more detailed than kit supplied? top & bottom metalwork doesn't seem too difficult, but in between is no man's land. i've thought about wrapping screen around a plug, and have seen model railroaders drill stacked styrene strips and slide wire through, but thought there must be a better way. something i've never seen in aftermarket parts. thanks Actually, stacking thin strips of styrene for the fins, and wires to replicate the tubes is oh-so-close to how real radiator cores are made. roadhawg Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Check with Detail Master. They have photoetch "Radiator Face Panels" made for that. 5 or 6 bucks.
southpier Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 thanks for the etch connections. i had never run across anything commercial. Art: someone gave me a link to Chuck Doan's 1/16 tractor build, and i was just too intimidated to even contemplate the process. here: http://public.fotki.com/ChuckDoan/model_projects/tractor_for_the/ it's beautiful, but way over my head.
kobuzz Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 (edited) I use metal window screen. In large pictures it's kinda funny but regular size is pretty good. Edited August 22, 2012 by kobuzz
MoparWoman Jamie Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 You know guys, please don't take this the wrong way. But so far I have not seen a photo ech piece that even comes close to looking like the real thing at all. They all look like screen mesh is all. Go on google and look up a radiator core and look at what they really look like and then look at those photo ech stuff. Here is a thread with a semi radiator I am building for a project that I am working on. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=50471&st=120 Now the radiator in that project is like 1inch wide, and maybe 2inches tall, and I have 12 fins in that radiator. The 12 curly parts I hand curved done and like 1mm maybe smaller. If I could do this, then a company could as well.
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 (edited) Check out the Detail Master PE rad core material in this Midget build over on the 'workbench' forum..... http://www.modelcars...showtopic=62492 It looks like the real thing, much more real and correct than any screen. Screen DOES look great to represent screen, like shaker screens in front of radiators on dirt-trackers, in grille openings, etc, but they're two distinct looks. Pro Tech Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Brian, thanks for posting link. Joe, here is a radiator that I used my part number PTMC 8 (Detailing Screen) on. I just layed it over the kit piece, tacked it in place and made new framework. Charlie Pro Tech
gluebomb Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I am going to put my two cents in and say go to Detail Master. I don't have the part number, but if I remember when I get home from work tonight I'll post it w/ a picture. I have about 5 frets of this stuff and looks as real as real can get.
Pro Tech Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Oh I forgot to mention, price for the screen is $3.25 and can do approx. three radiators (front and back) so that works out to about $1.08 per radiator. Charlie Pro Tech
