Chuck Most Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Bill Coulter is there to cover the event, but I guess I never thought of Model Cars setting up its own display at the show.
Harry P. Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Not only the cost of airfare, but the cost of lodging and the cost and hassle of hauling all the stuff needed to set up a proper show booth. It can't just be Gregg sitting in a chair... there also would have to be some sort of booth and display. It would be a huge expense to put up a booth there.
mikemodeler Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 There could also be that cost thing- those booths aren't free! If Revell didn't spring for a booth, I don't blame Gregg. Kalmbach Publishing (Scale Auto, Fine Scale Modeler, Model Railroader) has a broader appeal for the whole show than MCM does. And if I remember correctly, Gregg's back is not up for that long distance flight.
Tom Kren Posted October 11, 2012 Author Posted October 11, 2012 My guess would be finances. Have you seen the cost of airfare from Hawaii to Cleveland? Aside from that, I used to live in Canton, so i've been to Cleveland. If you lived in Hawaii...would you leave it for Cleveland?? So my question Tom is this...why aren't you there photographing and reporting to us? going sat will be there allday and will take pics
Guest Johnny Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Because it's Cleveland would be reason enough. Personally I think they made a mistake moving there.
crazyjim Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 If anybody is going, could you stop by the Iwata booth? They might have a banner with a build of mine and Fatkidd's on it. Sure would like to see pics of the banner - and say hi to Tom Grossman too.
Harry P. Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Because it's Cleveland would be reason enough. Personally I think they made a mistake moving there. It's probably cheaper for them to do it in Cleveland. That's my guess.
crazyjim Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 But the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is there! WHY???
LoneWolf15 Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Because it's Cleveland would be reason enough. Personally I think they made a mistake moving there. Wrong ! This means we only have to drive for two hours to get to Cleveland rather than the six to get to Chicago ! Lmao ! The cost of the show are quite a bit cheaper in Cleveland as compared to Chicago also . For those attending , Kathie and I will be there in the Lone Wolf Custom Painting booth . Stop by and say hello !
aarondupont Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Cleveland's not so bad a place! Born and raised there. I've lived in alot of places in the military. But still returned to live in Cleveland. The show is here due to pricing. My friend at Walthers said it was cheaper for them to put the show on in Cleveland. They were astounded at the size of the IX Center. Travel around the city is easier than Chicago, NO TOLLS. I build masters for State Tool and Die in model railroading. We were not invited. Maybe we're not big enough to be on they're radar. Yes we would have the added expense of building a simple booth. Three people run the business, so the shop would have to close for the duration of the show. But then I'm retired and would have loved to do the show. I'll be there all day Saturday. I'm more interested in model car stuff. But will be spending time at the Walthers booth and Depot Trains booth. If you stop by Depot Trains tell them Aaron sent you. A couple of my model railroading buddies are coming in from Pittsburgh. So we'll be hanging out together. I'll probably be wearing a silver/grey golf shirt with Railroad Industrial SIG and a vessel pouring molten steel embroidered above the pocket. If you see me stop me and say hey! Enjoy the show! Aaron Dupont
Guest Johnny Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 It's probably cheaper for them to do it in Cleveland. That's my guess. You mean considering when it was here they couldn't move a chair unless a union laborer was paid. Plus fees, taxes and anything else they could think of to make a dime off it? Chicago and the Burbs are losing everything little at a time.
Deano Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 And its in Cleveland But, but ... in Cleveland you could meet Howard the Duck! Errr ... maybe not.
Tom Kren Posted October 12, 2012 Author Posted October 12, 2012 YES IT WAS CHEEPER AIRPORT IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE IX PLACE IS HUGE AND WE HAVE THE BROWNS OH SCRATCH THAT LAST THING LOL
mikemodeler Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 It has been stated before that the unions have made it difficult for shows in the Chicago area. I understand their rules, I just don't think they are relevant when you have a show like iHobby that does not have the deep pocket exhibitors like other shows do and you have to pay $100 for an union electrician to plug in an extension cord. I think maybe Revell has struck upon something by not attending the show and using social media to announce their 2013 lineup.
Guest Johnny Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Okay, all joking aside, am I the only one that finds this just a little bit...tacky? Sorry Jacen, but it is what it is. It is the reason some locals here that used to attend every year will not go.
Harry P. Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 According to a press release from the Hobby Manufacturer's Association: HMA Show Committee Chair Douglas Blaine (Bachmann Trains) said that the return on exhibitors' investments was "crucial" to the decision to move iHobby to another venue. Translation into plain non-PC, straightforward English: Chicago was too freakin' expensive.
Harry P. Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 There was only one reason for the move, and it's spelled $$$$$$$.
Casey Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 I think maybe Revell has struck upon something by not attending the show and using social media to announce their 2013 lineup. Bingo. Remember when we used to wait three months for the kit news to appear in a monthly magazine? This past Saturday night we got the news within hours of Revell showing up at the Toledo NNL, with pictures of everything. I'm sure it has to do with money in part, but a quicker, more direct method of communicating with your potential customers will win over an older, slower method every time.
