robertw Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I have built a pair of floor to ceiling corner shelf units on either side of the door into my basement "man cave". Each unit is about seven foot tall by seven foot long with about seven shelves per unit. The shelves are a combination of the prefinished 12" wide wood shelves that you can buy at any big box home store with a glass shelf in between each. Sheets of clear acrylic panels attached to the front of each unit keep the dust out. While these units are certainly not furniture quality it doesn't really matter since few other then myself use this room. They also hold a lot of models and promos, in excess of 250 at the moment, which are on display and in a relatively dust free environment. It always seemed to be a shame to put in all the effort of building a model then hiding it away in its original box.
Deano Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 My first response was "Black Cats! Lots of Black Cats!" But, truth be told, I haven't done that since I was 10. I have a few on display (usually the newest builds) and the rest are packed securely away.
Ramfins59 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 My finished builds go into glass display cabinets in my model area down in my basement...
Foxer Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 When I was a kid I built model battleships, then floated them in the bathtub where they were attacked by enemy planes. None survived! At the time, war movies were still the rage. That Chris Craft I built about 12 was never armored enough to survive the enemy in the skies over the pond.
GeeBee Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 All my finished models go into custom made acrylic cases, but I need to find another solution as I'm running out of room to put anymore ...
greymack Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 Hey guys how about wrapping them up in bubble wrap and putting the models in a rubber mate tute.
rmvw guy Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 IKEA Billy book cases with extra glass shelfs and glass doors, about $150. I just counted 62 models in one unit. I have 5 units on one wall in my garage, not all filled yet. I think they work best in white. I also am lucky enough to have a heated garage, and I practically live in the garage.
lordairgtar Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 This is what i have for display. I was at a friends house and he had his models all displayed in nice cabinets, so I bought mine.
XJ6 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 All my finished models go into custom made acrylic cases, but I need to find another solution as I'm running out of room to put anymore ... I like your choice of Builds...nice to see these subjects built.....Very Nice..... Cheers Don aka XJ6

dragcarz Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 ]My wife is an Interior Decorator, and she likes our house to reflect this, its important for everything to have "THE LQQK". This is'nt a bad thing and most of the very cool things I have in my office/ model room have come from her. One of my display cases is my favorite. It came from a store in a small town here in Illinois. Its a true antique with original top, front and side glass all very wavy. The glass shelves were missing as was the rear sliding doors. I'm no carpenter but I did Manage to hobbel out two new sliding door made of beadboard and MDF. I purchased new glass shelves from a local glass shop. Being an antique it has no provision for lighting,so I positioned the display case under two can light in the ceiling. I dont hardly have $200.00 in the whole thing and it houses my collection of 1320 Diecast, and 28 plastc builds, as well as old AMT and Revell parts packs. I also display vintage AMT Kandy Kolor spray cans as well as an assortment of Glue tubes in various stages of emptyness, lastly, strewn about is race track ticket stubs from drag races I"ve attended over the years .
Mercman Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Most of my collection I divided up between my 2 kids. I told them to come over had everything on a table, and told them to start picking. What was left I sold or traded off. I still did keep about 25 built ups though for myself. My most recent one was the Witch model I built this summer. A neighbor at the lake thought it looked neat, so I gave it to her. I can get it back for contests when needed though if I want. Also I have a couple of diorama's on permanent display at the LHS in the window. The one has been there for 20 years now, and people still comment on it.
