Kaleb Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I know it's been covered before, and I have not found it. I did a Search for it with a lot of different results. I usually use krylon BBQ black for my semi gloss. It did really well until they stopped carrying it. I switched to krylons semigloss black. I use it one time with excellent results. I use it again and it comes out watery after a good shaking. Are there any other cheap semi gloss black paints that I could use?
58 Impala Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I like using Krylon, I've had good luck with that brand of paint. I like that its not too thick and gives excellent coverage. I've never had a problem with it being too thin. Really for the price (I buy mine at Wallyworld) it is one of the cheapest and best spray paints out there.
Fat Brian Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I use the Walmart gloss black in the blue cans, it says gloss but it has a nice satiny sheen. It doesn't cover the best and takes a few coats but it still does better than Krylon for me, it always crazes or wrinkles on me.
retroguy Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I use rustoleum and have no complaints,I also use their satin blk and other colors by them...
Kaleb Posted December 2, 2012 Author Posted December 2, 2012 I've considered the rust but wasn't sure about it. Because I compared their high heat to krylons high heat and there was no comparison.
kobuzz Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I like the BBQ black also. Used to be everywhere and now the only place that carries it is O'reilly's. I started to stock pile it just incase they stop selling it too.
slusher Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 I use the krylon flat black at hobby lobby in the short cans, it always dries to a semi gloss or satin every time. l have used it for years and the 40 percent coupon helps. Krylon works great for models...
Kaleb Posted December 3, 2012 Author Posted December 3, 2012 I will have to check that Walmart can out, it's cheap enough. Second one I will try is that Krylon. One reason I like most krylons is that they come out smooth.
Daf57 Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 (edited) I'm pretty picky about the semi-gloss blacks and so far I've been happiest with the Rustoleum Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2x - but I decant it. Out of the can it's to much too soon. Has like a fire hose nozzle and obliterates instantly. Out of the airbrush it's very good and has a nice semi-gloss. I mix it with lacquer thinner - that may help. YMMV Daf Edited December 3, 2012 by Daf57
DON-T2 Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Lowes carries Valspar in satins, I have not used the black but have used the red for 60's - 70's era headers and it works great.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I use Krylon 1613 (Satin Black) which is really close to the right sheen for fenderwells, firewalls etc.
