southpier Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 i belong to a metric ton of internet forums. all different subjects of interest, and i can realistically say that there might be more model building in my day if i spent less time on the internet. i know there's a load of criticism out there - about everything! - but specifically how this forum is run (read = moderated). i don't know if these guys get paid, but even paying jobs can suck the life out of an individual. it has to be a labor of love to wade through all the posts and try to make objective calls continuously. i certainly couldn't do it. reading a specific topic which got shut down, yes, i had added my two cents also, i can honestly say it was done with neatness, dispatch, and alacrity. what more could we possibly expect from these guys? i say "good job" men!
sjordan2 Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 (edited) As they say in British parliament, "Hear, hear!" And just to be both illuminative and obnoxious: Hear, hear is an expression used as a short, repeated form of hear him, hear him. It represents a listener's agreement with the point being made by a speaker. In recent usage it has often been re-analysed as here, here, although this is incorrect.[1] It was originally an imperative for directing attention to speakers, and has since been used, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, as "the regular form of cheering in the House of Commons", with many purposes, depending on the intonation of its user.[2] Its use in Parliament is linked to the fact that applause is normally (though not always) forbidden in the chambers of the House of Commons and House of Lords.[3] Edited January 5, 2013 by sjordan2
Harry P. Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Thank you, Joe. No, we don't get paid, moderating is a volunteer job.
bbowser Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I must agree. It's a thankless job and they do it well.
slusher Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 This is the best forum, l am a member here and scale auto. l really have been happy over here and when they close a thread down Harry gives the reason. l hardly ever go over to scale auto its really dead over there. They do a great job here....
JM485 Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I have to agree with Slusher, SA does not have a very friendly policy anymore. Not saying it is not a great forum, but it is definately one of the reasons I moved over to here. The mods here seem just like regular members, rather than someone lurking around only to close threads.
Guest Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 A major kudos to the mods here, and to Gregg for hosting the best car model forum on the web!

Just like so many other aspects of this hobby. An explanation for the post in question, even sent by PM, goes a long way. It an't easy watch'n over a bunch of hooligans, but someone has to do it. Thanks guys!
Tom Geiger Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I'm currently a member of this board and the Spotlight Hobbies board. As far as board bull and challenging the moderators -- how friggin tough is it to play nice and follow the rules? I've never gotten any warnings on either board. I'm not into drama. I can debate an issue without resorting to name calling. I have enough drama in real life. The hobby is my escape. I don't have a problem with either board's management or moderation. I like the Spotlight format of one forum with the latest on top. Every time I log in I immediately see what's new. I'm still trying to get used to the format of many subjects here. I find that some of the subjects don't get read as much as the others. I've posted in some with no reads for days. I do use the "view new content" button and am unsure of the criteria it uses. I find that if I view one post and go back to it, the contents of the page have changed quite a bit.
CadillacPat Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I think the majority of readers in any Forum visit mostly for the information. It weakens an informative site when it's flooded with emoticons, smileys, or the ever recurring one word replies,"Awesome" When correct and legit info is posted it makes people return for more. Some people visit to read and some visit mostly to reply. Check your View Counts and see how they out number the Replies. More people are interested in just reading and then going on to something else. It's still somewhat Social, akin to how some can talk for an hour on the phone and others like to get things said and move on. CadillacPat

CadillacPat this site is great, but weeding through the posts makes me crazier than i already am! http://z8.invisionfree.com/Scale_Racing_Lobby/index.php?

It weakens an informative site when it's flooded with emoticons, smileys, or the ever recurring one word replies,"Awesome" Some of us participate in the Forum for the camaraderie and friendships too. Part of that is acknowledging friends progress and finished work. I do agree that I don't like seeing that there are new posts in threads I'm following only to click on it to read "awesome". I always try to add something to the discussion if I comment, but a lot of guys aren't that vocal.
Guest Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I could care less if there are one word responses to someone's build. What I do not like is the use of text lingo.

I used to feel that way, but those single words of praise aren't for the benefit of the audience, they're to encourage a fellow modeler, and perhaps spur him on to even better achievements. 2000-cvpi Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Sorry, but somebody had to do it. I don't mind the one word posts, I am a member of a lot of forums and this one is the best run forum of them all. The texting in posts drives me crazy.
tubbs Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Sorry, but somebody had to do it. I don't mind the one word posts, I am a member of a lot of forums and this one is the best run forum of them all. The texting in posts drives me crazy. 1 word posts are allright, i prefer a little more, even if it is critical of the build. a little voice inside says one word posts are just to get the posters number of posts up. on the other hand, you look at "127 VIEWS" and only "3 responses", not too thrilling. . anyways, thats off topic..... like everyone has said, this is a great forum, easy to follow, and lots of subjects matter. you admin guys do a bang up job. KUDOS! ... and a little shout out to the posters and builders out there to keep this forum thriving!!!
Patrick2005 Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Cheers to all the Mods for keeping this place a great one to come back too!!!
