Chief Joseph Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 can a resin part be cast .010 thick ????? or what's the thinnest you can cast It has a lot to do with the shape of the part and the type of mold you're using, but 0.010" is do-able. I've cast parts with details thinner than 0.010", but I'm using all the proper casting equipment & materials to get those results. You'll have a hard time doing detail like that without pressurizing the resin as it cures.
mr moto Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Also, don't expect much strength at that thickness. It won't be as strong as .010" sheet styrene. It will be very delicate and easily damaged.
Casey Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 It has a lot to do with the shape of the part and the type of mold you're using What Joseph said. Sometimes you have to find out what the limits are through trial and error.
dimaxion Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 That wheel is amazing! John You took the words right out of my mouth .. Is this a resin Part ? Thanx ..
Casey Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Is this a resin part? Yes, it is. The shape of each "spoke" is close to triangular in cross section, so that adds some strength, but when you get to the point of light being able to pass through the section, you've gone too thin. The flanges of these spokes are at the limit of what can be done, and again, the shape and structure of the spokes helps with stability, but you can only take it so far before areas are too thin to be able to withstand finishing and installation:
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 The sharpness of detail and the cleanliness of the castings on these, and the wire-mag wheels is outstanding. Are these your products, Casey?
Steven Zimmerman Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I cast a resin piece so thin once, it only had one side !....Dropped it on the carpet, landed with that side down....never COULD find it again.........
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I cast a resin piece so thin once, it only had one side !.... Man, truly only TWO dimensional ?? That's seriously thin !!!
Foxer Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I'd say look at some of Replicas & Miniatures' castings to see how thin you can really go.
