sjordan2 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Maybe if this site had an adequate search function...
ajwheels Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Nothing about an online modeling forum should ever be exasperating! (Unless you're a mod, of course!). Just ignore the stuff that exasperates you! If someone is asking what's the best glue to use, either just answer the question, or ignore it and let someone else answer. Why let anything here bug you? It's a hobby... we're here to have fun, remember? Now this should be pinned at the top of the main page.....................Oh yea, but nobody reads the pinned stuff..................never mind.................
Harry P. Posted April 28, 2013 Author Posted April 28, 2013 Maybe if this site had an adequate search function... I think the functionality of the search engine is embedded in the forum software and is out of our control. I think. Dave Ambrose would know for sure, and I know that he is just as frustrated with this software as anyone, given the constant site crashes and SQL errors and all the rest of it.
MAGNUM4342 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 (edited) Now this should be pinned at the top of the main page.....................Oh yea, but nobody reads the pinned stuff..................never mind................. Honestly, I think there are too many pinned subjects in some topics. Some of them could stand to be deleted as they are now moot. Like the "Don't answer mail from the forum". "Forum shutdown" and "Gamers". Really?! Gamers? Are there NO gaming forums at all? Edited April 28, 2013 by MAGNUM4342
Harry P. Posted April 28, 2013 Author Posted April 28, 2013 I don't see why we have a "Gamers" area, either.
MAGNUM4342 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 I don't see why we have a "Gamers" area, either. Don't take me wrong on this one. I'm not agame or gamer hater. I just have a difficult time wrapping my head around why there would be a thread devoted to gamers in a model car forum.

I have no idea why we have it.

Lownslow Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 didn't gaming kind of kill model building? actually it did the exact opposite theres a few people on FB building models of their favorite video game cars.
george 53 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 We have a WOODWORKING section here??? REALLY????
MAGNUM4342 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 We have a WOODWORKING section here??? REALLY???? Sure! But you gotta scroll really far down to find it! I guess that's why noone posts there.
Casey Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 The one thing I don't like on this board is when someone asks a question and a moderator takes that new thread and adds it to the end of some five year old thread on the same topic, that has 10 pages of inside jokes and missing photos. Nobody wants to wade through all that. And a newbie maybe won't find it and think you deleted his thread. Is the explanation of how to apply BMF from six years ago different than how it applied now, so different that it requires a new topic of its own? A lot of the redundant questions have already been answered, and some are even pinned in the TT&T section, yet people still post a new question. The answers aren't new, and they aren't outdated for the most part, so why discount what someone said in 2007 when the same answer will be posted by someone else in 2013? All that does is add more topics covering the exact same issue. Searching the 'site for the answer to your question is the best way to find out if the question has already been asked, and if so, what the answers were. It's not hard to scroll past a reply which provides no information or is no help in answering your question. That is a fact on message boards, and we can't force people to post only things which add new, valuable information and are truly on topic. The dehydrator and paint drying topic which is pinned is a good example. There are 13 pages of info and at least five different ways to use a dehydrator posted, yet once a month someone posts how to use a dehydrator to dry paint. The answers are already here, the question already answered. If there's no info to add to the dehydrator topic, please do, but how is it helpful to forum members to have seven topics asking the same question in the same forum section? Now, if you're thinking about a message list type forum where what's posted is gone forever after a month, then I can totally understand it, but on a forum such as this where posts remain and can be viewed even if they are from 2006, that line of thinking doesn't apply. Good tips, sound advice, and accurate information is just as valid in 2013 and it was in 2006. If the Q&A and TT&T sections are going to remain separate, I suggest they be clearly and specifically defined so that there is very little overlap, but whatever is decided, we'll make it work. As for the search function here on the 'site, it's not perfect, but I find clicking on the white flower/star thing to the right, which takes you to the advanced search function page, is pretty good at helping you find what you need using keywords. Using the search function would help a lot with redundant questions, but you have to have some experience here to know where the advanced search function is found. The search box is ridiculously easy to find, though, so that's half the battle.
sjordan2 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 (edited) The white flower is "Advanced Search?" Who would figure that out? And using it, I got only one or two threads specifically related to a spray/paint booth. Edited April 28, 2013 by sjordan2
Harry P. Posted April 28, 2013 Author Posted April 28, 2013 The white flower is "Advanced Search?" Some of the functions of this software are not exactly "user friendly" or evident.
Casey Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 The white flower is "Advanced Search?" Who would figure that out? And using it, I didn't get a single answer specifically related to spray booth. Try it inside quotation marks: "spray booth" gives results with that exact term/word pair. I got five pages of results, including a few topics which were clearly about spray booths. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it does work.
knarf Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 I agree! Makes as much sense as having a woodworking section here. I have no idea why we have it. what if someone's building a model out of wood???
bandit1 Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Simple Solution! Copy AF!!!....There ya go.... www.automotiveforums.com Notice they have so much yet you dont hear anyone over there bickering about any of this type of nonsense!? Notice they have things set up to where you would click on something like below- General Everything- Modeling- Aircraft/Military Boats Planes Tanks Automotive Big Rig WIP Under glass Light duty WIP Under glass ETC.... ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That way Each catagory will be at the top and for each catagory there is a sub and for each sub there is a secondary!...Get it? And maybe you can add Tips/Tricks & QandA to each one pertaining to certain things?...(Note that some tips and stuff work for both say Big Rig, Light Duty, Or even Aircraft and for that just add the thread to that section as well? And if you want to see it in action just visit AF!
CadillacPat Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 What if someone is just thinking of building a Model? Maybe a "Thinking Of" Section??? Or wait, What if someone is thinking of building an invisible Model. Members could be told there is a Section for Invisible Models while all the time there would not really be a need to create one. "It's there, it's there, you just have to keep looking" Please do not make anymore changes, I don't want the layout to get too anal. CadillacPat
blunc Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 The white flower is "Advanced Search?" Who would figure that out? And using it, I got only one or two threads specifically related to a spray/paint booth. I didn't know we had a white flower, I thought we had a security torx for advanced search.
