DrewCfromSC Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Ok im looking for some fine sanding paper or ploishing papers. Went to my local autobody paint supplier and found nothing above 1500 grit. Any ideas where to try? Have a assorted set of the 2X2 pads from hobby lobby but would like to get a few sheets locally. Trying to keep shipping costs down. Have not tried the autoparts stores yet like NAPA, carquest etc, but plan to after work tonight. Any ideas? Ive got some 1000 and 1500 grit sheets for trade if you need any. Drew C from SC
CrazyGirl Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Wal-Mart has 3M up to 2000 , and MicroMark has free shipping this week on the polishing kit , .
TheRX7Project Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 my local hobby shop has sandpapers up to 12000 grit. They're like $3 for a small sheet though.
slusher Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Hobby lobby has sanding pads of different grits perfect for sanding and wet sanding. Be sure to go to hobbylobby.com and print a coupon for 40 percent off.
Blown03SVT Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Wal-Mart has 3M up to 2000 , and MicroMark has free shipping this week on the polishing kit , . Buying direct from Micro Mesh is sometimes cheaper: http://micro-surface.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=272_4_75_81
Casey Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I would stick to buying Micro-Mesh polishing cloths, regardless of where you purchase them from. They have a cloth/fabric type backing, whereas an automotive wetsanding type sandpaper has a water-resistant paper type backing. The polishing cloths are more flexible and are designed for use on small scale vehicles, they wash and rinse easily, and a set (1,800-12,000) should last you a very long time.
southpier Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Buying direct from Micro Mesh.... thanks for that link; never heard of MM
ScaleDale Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I found this at Fred Meyer in the paint or auto department. Some auto parts stores have it too. I use it to lightly touch up paint between coats http://3mcollision.com/3m-trizact-performance-sandpaper-3000-grit-03064.html Dale
DrewCfromSC Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 good stuff! Thank you all. Im not going to tye up a bunch of space so yes ive got the micromesh order now, my local autozone only had the 3000 grit pads. Thanks again. Drew C
Blown03SVT Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 glad I could help! Micro Mesh was the original kit I bought in 2000. I have had it all this time. I always wet sand so they have lasted quite awhile.
Skip Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 I have been buying the 3m fine polishing paper at Wally World for years. I use them with the Meguiar's Mirror Glaze - Sanding Backing Pad E-7200 (2.5" X 5.5"). I cut them down with a sharp knife to 1-1/4" X 2" if you cant find the Meguiar's pads a regular household sponge would probably work. Then cut the polishing paper down to fit, using a straight edge and an x-acto knife from the backside of the paper. Most shops that carry automotive paint products should carry sanding backing pads 3m makes a similar pad. (If the link doesn't work, search "sanding backing pad" on the Meguiar's website.) http://www.meguiarsdirect.com//webstore/store/meguiarsdirect/product_list.do
