Joe Handley Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 We just got a couple in at work and I'm thinking about buying one of them to kustomize, is the chrome trim separate from the body like the 1/12 '57 Chevy and Lindberg '53 Ford?

Yes, the trim is separate and the body is inletted for fitting the trim. I just got one today and am very happy with it.
MrObsessive Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 (edited) The '55 Chevy Hardtop is out?? Great!! We have a club meeting Saturday, and I hope our kit vendor has 'em. As far as the chrome, I think the buildup would look a LOT better if one would strip the chrome trim, apply it to the body before painting, and then BMF everything. You can clean everything up, including those mold lines/cut tags, and the final result won't appear so "heavyhanded". Edited November 1, 2007 by MrObsessive

Another benefit is that with BMF, all the trim would match.
MrObsessive Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Looks like the '58 Chevy will have separate chrome also............ It would be a good time to line everything up too while we're at it! I hope this one is soon to be here!
Joe Handley Posted November 1, 2007 Author Posted November 1, 2007 (edited) Good god that looks like it'll be one hell of a job on that '58 what would you guys recommend for filling the depressions in the shell for the chrome trim, especially where the quarter panel humps are on the '55? cruz Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Hey Bill, hopefully I can make it to the CPMCC meeting Saturday to talk more about the 55' I also want you to see my latest Corolla, I should finish it by tonight...........See ya!
MrObsessive Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 what would you guys recommend for filling the depressions in the shell for the chrome trim, especially where the quarter panel humps are on the '55? Good old fashioned body putty should do the trick.............My favorite is Dynatron Putty-Cote which is a two part putty. It's a Bondo product so it's readily available.................. I swear by it 'cuz it dries fast, feather edges beautifully, and have not had a problem with the putty drying out (as long as the can is tightly sealed ). Others may have their favorites too............I like to stay with what's worked for me for years!
Joe Handley Posted November 1, 2007 Author Posted November 1, 2007 Thanks Obssesive! I've been working on the 1/12 '57 CHevy as a lead sled and wanted to completely remove the trim, so I glued it in place and ground it down with a dremel leaving a bunch of craters in the plastic around the trim derpressions and tried puttying the '53 Ford years ago with disaterous results. I'm debating about completely removing the side spear or just the upper half that's i line with the hump I asked about. I was actually wondering about filling it with evergreen or Plastruct that's a wee bit thicker and smoothing that down instead.
MrObsessive Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I was actually wondering about filling it with evergreen or Plastruct that's a wee bit thicker and smoothing that down instead. That's actually a good idea..............When I split the roof on the Ford to widen it, I did fill the gap with as much plastic as possible. I then added the putty to even out the surface. What's nice about body putty/plastic filler, is there is virtually no shrinkage which leads to no surprises six months down the road after it's all painted and built!
Joe Handley Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 I've been thinking about digging up some bondo for the '57 to fix the craters and any dips from between the depressions and trim.
