Ya I know what you mean Dave it sucks. I just was lookin on the Tube and just thought Id look uo the group b rally and I just had to post it I mean, you put a driver from NASCAR or INDY in one of these things and theyll be scared poopless.

Oh yeah! Rally drivers have bigger stones than any other race driver out there. I've spectated SCCA's North American version in Wellsboro, Pa., and while it's no WRC, it is as close as you can get around here. The good news is the Audi's, Cossies, Subies and Mitsu's are all present along with a smattering of more common and uncommon cars. I haven't been up for a couple years, but I've seen it 3 times and every time is impressive. The spectators actually get to see the cars up close and talk to the drivers in the town 'square' twice during the day of the race. I don't know what's more fun: driving to the stages , watching the cars fly by in the woods at high speed , eating at the "World's Famous Wellsboro Diner" (really), or camping in the pouring down rain (does almost every year!)

It's usually the first weekend of June every year. I highly recommend doing it at least once. It's a great way to get a big taste of the big boys close to home.

In my opinion I think that the Cosworth engines were the best engines ever built, I mean you could push out 500+HP with those things and they did that to the RS200, I mean, as an incredible piece of machinery, I would have to say the RS200 or the Audi Quattro Sport is the top!

I don't have anything against Ford(esp. Ford of Europe), but the true king was the quattro. The main reason is because until it came along, nothing else was even close to as competent as it was. If you ever get the chance to see/buy the video: "The quattro Experience" DO IT. The audio of the cars alone is worth it. It showcases not only the rally cars but the 87-88 IMSA team as well. I used to have a copy of it but lost it over the years to loaning it out.

Wow, I can't believe I didn't watch that until now! I am a junkie for audio of engines and this was a needed fix of the good stuff!

Out of all those cars that were running 4 cylinders, the MG Metros sounded the best. Whew, they are deeeep sounding for a 'banger! Of course, the Audi and the Porsche had the best sound. I really love the scene about 3:30 into the vid with the quattro on pavement, going through a little town uphill. Almost all of those backfire pops you hear sound like gunshots in person! Man, they just echo forever when you're in the forest waiting for them to go by. You sure do know when an Audi is coming!

It sounds like a 1600 or an 1800cc engine. Man, I forgot those Starlets were rear drive! That driver wasn't using the clutch on any of those full throttle shifts, ya know. That was a technique pioneered by the quattro drivers back in the 80s. Right foot to the floor, left foot operating the brake, arms rowing the wheel and the stick.... Wow! Serious as a heart attack!!! I'm sorry, other race drivers just don't have it. These guys don't usually go over 85-90mph(gearing maxes out around 115 usually) but, they are perilously close to lots of trees that don't give during impacts very well. All of this on roads that never see traffic moving faster than about 25mph because they aren't paved! Baja is about the only thing close and there aren't many trees in the desert.

Well said Jonathan, well said. Ya, that guy can drive and so can the Quattro drivers. Not many people can say they have that skill nowadays. I love Baja and CORR they are my favorite race series, along with rallying and SCCA type stuff.

The engine is a 4-cylinder turbo. You can hear the turbo chirp when he goes around a slow corner. He had a hard time trying to get back up to speed since the turbo was not spun up. Very cool little video. Thanks for sharing.

That would have been neat if Porsche would have raced that 959 more. But I doubt they could afford it. At the time that car was one of the most expensive cars in the world. I would hate to see the bill if they were racing it full time and crashing it. They did race the 959 at Le Mans though. I have a video of it racing on the straight at Le Mans and going 200+ mph. One of the tires popped and the car ended up in a bad crash. The motor for that car was out of the 962 Porsches.

the group b drivers were insane yet completely in controll of their turbocharged monsters. unbelieveable, watching them dancing inside the cockpit.

best of them had to be, IMO, walter rohrl. even in the opel ascona 400s, he was able to hold his own against the first wave of assault by the quattros. then when he finally signed with audi, he promptly went out and won the monte carlo rally. and the guy can drive anything. porsche built the carrera gt to his standards.

the best rally car had to be, IMO, audi s2 (the pikes peak car). like walter said, it was on loose gravel, doing 140+ mph, hanging off of a cliff, yet it was handling like it was on rails. amazing.

BTW brendon, i do not know if you know or not, but porsche did race the 959 in the paris-dakar rally in 1986 and won it.

too bad group died so soon. imagine where it would be today. i mean rally drivers today say they are out-driving the 300hp cars of today. they want more car. i agree. give it to them.

They dominated Paris-Dakar and came in 1st and 2nd, and pulled out an impressive overall 7th at Le Mans.

They had a lot of tire problems especially at Daytona.
