Ponti Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 (edited) Has anyone seen these back in the day or watched vintage rallies today with these beast? Or does anybody go to hillclimbs or rallies now? Hate to say it YES, Have marshalled on vintage rallies and been to the International Historic Motorsport Show They have a rally stage set-up in the grounds and they throw the group B cars round. Great event you can chat to the drivers and get up close and personal with the cars. My favorite car of the time was the Metro 6R4. you tube Metro 6R4 Edited January 26, 2008 by Ponti
dub Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 and here is one for you sound junkies. it is pure music to my ears. Man that hit the spot!!! I can imagine that some of your scale creations would sound (and move) like this were they 1:1's. Thanks for the adrenaline! ;)
Brendan Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 BTW brendon, i do not know if you know or not, but porsche did race the 959 in the paris-dakar rally in 1986 and won it. Yes I did know. A friend of mine had the Tamiya RC car that we used to play with. Wish they would have come out with a model of it.
lordairgtar Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 What about figure 8 drivers? Seemed like a crazy bunch there.
Nick F40 Posted January 27, 2008 Author Posted January 27, 2008 i agree with you guys 100%. the group b drivers were insane yet completely in controll of their turbocharged monsters. unbelieveable, watching them dancing inside the cockpit. best of them had to be, IMO, walter rohrl. even in the opel ascona 400s, he was able to hold his own against the first wave of assault by the quattros. then when he finally signed with audi, he promptly went out and won the monte carlo rally. and the guy can drive anything. porsche built the carrera gt to his standards. the best rally car had to be, IMO, audi s2 (the pikes peak car). like walter said, it was on loose gravel, doing 140+ mph, hanging off of a cliff, yet it was handling like it was on rails. amazing. BTW brendon, i do not know if you know or not, but porsche did race the 959 in the paris-dakar rally in 1986 and won it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06o4FmENM1c too bad group died so soon. imagine where it would be today. i mean rally drivers today say they are out-driving the 300hp cars of today. they want more car. i agree. give it to them. Ya, those cars went 0-60 in under 3 sec. so, that's pretty incredible. Those Audi's were always monsters, especially at the hillclimb, my background is a Sport Quattro. That HEMI is music!
Nick F40 Posted January 27, 2008 Author Posted January 27, 2008 Another one for you to enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRO1TlLt6KU look at 3:11, I have only seen that in this video.
Nick F40 Posted January 27, 2008 Author Posted January 27, 2008 (edited) Cool, the lights look funny on the restored one That is neat though and I love the sound. That is a FANTASTIC video to demonstrate rally skill, I enjoyed it! thanks, Dale Edited January 27, 2008 by Nick F40
bob paeth Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I doubt that any type of racing can compete with group B for excitement. My question would be who had the most nerve ........................the drivers or ........................those stupid spectators standing on the outside curves. It would seem that the ban was to protect the spectators from themselves. bob
Nick F40 Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 yup, the RS200 incident was the big one and even the one driver said that at the after race tech inspection he would find half fingers in the air ducts and grill from people trying to touch the cars as they went by.
CAL Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 (edited) it was Henri Toivonen and Co-Pilot Sergio Cresto's, the Purtuguese Rally tragedy when Joaguim Santos plowed into a crowed of spectators, the death of Marc Surer's accident (also in a RS200) that killed his co-driver was the final straws for Group B. Edited January 28, 2008 by CAL
Nick F40 Posted January 30, 2008 Author Posted January 30, 2008 If only the spectators would have been under control. Most of them were trying to swerve to miss the people and that's how they crashed. Although someone would have probably complained about power. Does anyone know what kind of setup the S4 had, I mean with the turbo/supercharger, what the 2.2 bar boost is?
Nick F40 Posted February 2, 2008 Author Posted February 2, 2008 I like this. This has great footage! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyHYj-oo1wk
CAL Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 (edited) This is one of my favorites. Group C Derick Bell doing a lap at the "83 LeMans in a 956 - before the chicanes. Edited February 2, 2008 by CAL
Nick F40 Posted February 3, 2008 Author Posted February 3, 2008 Gotta love Group C. I also love the video of that 1977 Martini Porcshe.
stanleymsn Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 WRC is the real thing lets see if nascar drivers do what they do that takes a whole lotta skills!!!!
CAL Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 (edited) Gotta love Group C. I also love the video of that 1977 Martini Porcshe. The open cockpit Martini 936? Yeah thats a good one too. There is also a good one of Bell in a 956 doing a lap at Nurburgring especailly when Jacky passes - 7+ min They say it takes 100 laps just to memorize the track. 14 miles! 172 corners! "A twisty devil" at speeds over 190MPH. Another one I'd like to see a NASCAR driver try and tackle. Edited February 3, 2008 by CAL
Nick F40 Posted February 12, 2008 Author Posted February 12, 2008 NASCAR drivers couldn't even get it to the first straight, they're to chicken to go that fast on narrow roads, their sponsers probably won't let them or they'll have a caution because he got a little loose on the second bend. Nurburgring is hard to tame, especially in under 7 min. heck I stll don't know it in PGR4! If you think about it, it is basically a huge tarmac rally!
Nick F40 Posted February 12, 2008 Author Posted February 12, 2008 I know, I was just rattling your guys feathers! I would LOVE to go to the Green Hell!
Joe Handley Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I'd pay to see Jr Johnson and some of his fellow ex-moonshiners take a car set up for...ahem....deliveries....on some of the race courses just to see how their old iron compares to modern racecars

Nick F40--> your avatar reminds me of this: A signature I used for a while on a different Message board.... Thanks, and that is sick. Nick F40 Posted February 12, 2008 Author Posted February 12, 2008 ok, here's one, this shows the talent
Joe Handley Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Nick F40--> your avatar reminds me of this: A signature I used for a while on a different Message board.... That is an incredible pic! ok, here's one, this shows the talent Awsome video here! Don't see too many people driving two footed either! From what I've been told, if you do that while taking a driver's license test in Illinois, you automaticly fail the test!
Nick F40 Posted February 14, 2008 Author Posted February 14, 2008 Man, that sucks, I hope that doesn't happen to me!
CAL Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I wonder, as a driver, how do you ever get used to the stupid spectators?
