Harry P. Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Just use a YouTube mp3 site... Isn't that the same as downloading mp3s from Napster or Limewire back in the day? As in stealing? Not that I didn't do my share of it, so I'm not judging... but isn't this the same thing, intellectually speaking?

Yes, you are ripping the audio track from the video, I am not going to lie, I use a similar site , or maybe its the same site that Austin is talking about. You are just downloading the audio track. Edit I should add that it does not always work, at least with the one that I use, there some videos that the site can not rip the audio tracks from, as the up-loader of the video enabled something that blocks it Edit2 There are also a handful of add-ons, or extensions for web browsers, in my case, FireFox, that will enable you to download the audio tracks as well. southpier Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 sounds like complaining at a free lunch.... on another note (!!!), I've got a piece of flash or sprue stuck Under oNe of my sHift keYs and iT"s driving me - nevermind, I think it's ouT, nOw.

And so is using AdBlocker, or some of the other software that lets you download music. But I already HAD all this stuff, and I'm NEVER IN 100 YEARS going to buy any of the crapp that's constantly being shoved in my face, so I really don't give a rat's rear about the fine points of morality on this one.
Austin T Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Isn't that the same as downloading mp3s from Napster or Limewire back in the day? As in stealing? Not that I didn't do my share of it, so I'm not judging... but isn't this the same thing, intellectually speaking? Since your a sharp guy I would have figured you'd be all over it,especially after the part of my comment that you neglected to include in the quote. Like I said I'm not a strong advocate of using it (Not saying I haven't used it in the past, just not for all my music) but sometimes it's one of your only options when looking for a specific song. If you want a better way to do something similar SoundCloud and BandCamp have tons of free music(Not much mainstream or old stuff) put up BY the producers of it, both of those sites are my go to places for electronic music.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 sounds like complaining at a free lunch.... So, if somebody gave a free jazz concert in a park, and every 5 minutes, sometimes in the middle of a song, some clown came on stage shouting at the top of his lungs how great Tide, or Kia, or some off-the-wall mortgage company was, it just MIGHT kinda take the pleasure of the "free" concert away, ya think?
Harry P. Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Since your a sharp guy I would have figured you'd be all over it... I used to be all over it, back about 10-12 years or so. And the way I rationalized it then was that I was only downloading digital copies of songs that I had already paid for (as in buying the albums)... so I wasn't really stealing, just "updating" my collection of music to a newer format. At least that's what I told myself. But since then I've sort of had a change of heart.
Pete J. Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Actually, I find it interesting that you can upload CDs of albums that you own to iTunes so you can listen to them on your mobile devices like my ipod shuffle.
Austin T Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Still shooting at the wrong target, what I was trying to convey was that you used context clues to figure out what a YouTube to MP3 site was. I could honestly care less about the adventures of Harry the Pirate (The chances of this conversation not having a pirate joke were pretty slim to begin with, arggg) and your morals and ethics.
Harry P. Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 you used context clues to figure out what a YouTube to MP3 site was. Actually I already knew what a Youtube mp3 converter site was... I was just making a point.

At least that's what I told myself. But since then I've sort of had a change of heart. The way I see it is if you've actually bought ONE copy of the music, whether on vinyl, tape, CD, MP3 or whatever, you've paid for the right to listen to the music an unlimited number of times. If the playback and storage technology changes, and you make an own-use copy, or download one, to take advantage of the new playback or storage technology, I don't see how you've committed any moral breach...at all. The right to listen to a particular piece of music forever doesn't get used up just because the storage and playback technology changes. That's my argument, anyway.

So if I record a song from the radio to cassette, you know, 80s style, is that stealing?
Guest Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Seeing that we're talking about stealing music, here's one you can have for free, no royalties no worries.... Seems like a good time to give this a bump, I keep hearing a loud ticking sound in my left ear...... It was raining hard in Hilo I needed one more fare to make my night A guy up ahead waved to flag me down He got in at the light Oh, where you going to, my modeling building dude It's a shame you ruined your Dukes Charger in the rain He just looked out the window He said, "Sixteen Kahuna Lane" Something about him was familiar I could swear I'd seen his face before But he said, "I'm sure you're mistaken" And he didn't say anything more It took a while, but he looked in the mirror And he glanced at the license for my name A smile seemed to come to him slowly It was a sad smile, just the same And he said, "How are you Harry" I said, "How are you Gregg" Through the too many miles And the Hobby Town aisles I still remember you It was somewhere in a fairy tale I used to moderate the Forum We learned about models on the hood of a Dodge The lesson hadn't gone too far You see, he was gonna be a Kahuna And I was gonna learn to draw He took off to buy more models And I took off to find more ink There was not much more for us to talk about Whatever we had once was gone So I turned my cab into the driveway Past the gate and the fine trimmed lawns Then he said, "We must get together But I knew it'd never be arranged And he handed me twenty dollars For a two fifty fare He said, "Harry, can you make change?" Well, another man might have been angry And another man might have been hurt But another man never would've let it go I stashed the bill in my Aloha shirt And he walked away in silence It's strange, how you never know But we'd both gotten what we'd hoped for Such a long, long time ago You see, he was gonna be a Kahuna And I was gonna learn to draw He took off to find more models And I took off to find more ink.......
disabled modeler Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 A surprise bill to pay of 600.oo and they want it all right now....of coarse its the first time I got the bill from them....
Craig Irwin Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Doing some research for some old pickup trucks replica stock builds and it seems no one leaves them stock anymore.
High octane Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 No Craig a lot of guys me included, buy new or used pick ups and fix them to the way we want them. Bed-liner, tonneau covers, fog lights, graphics, etc. I need to use my brand new truck for work when I bought it, so I immediately had to have a bed liner, as the company gave me compensation for me using my truck.
Craig Irwin Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Nick, I'm referring to lowered, chop topped mag wheeled candy painted late model powered customs on air bags, completely useless for information on building vintage stock pickups.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 So if I record a song from the radio to cassette, you know, 80s style, is that stealing? Short answer: yes.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Doing some research for some old pickup trucks replica stock builds and it seems no one leaves them stock anymore. What kind of trucks are you after, and where are you looking? I just did a random image search on Bing for "1950 Ford pickup" and got a lot of hits of restored-stock or close to stock.

Another trick, if you're searching for photos of a stock vehicle, is to search for a restoration.. 1950 Ford pickup restoration. When I did that, this is just one of dozens of hits I got: http://www.oldride.com/classic_trucks/ford_f1.html A lot of times you'll find a detailed step-by-step photographic record, with a lot of good shots to use as references for detailing.
Tom Geiger Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Ha! My wife. she was upset at me about something. Just kept making faces so I asked. She was upset that she wanted to go out on Saturday Sept 20th, but she said she just noticed I put "something selfish" on the calendar for that day. Puzzled I go look at the calendar.... Yea, I put "Stick Day" on the calendar... that's the day the town will take branches! I told her I'd be very happy to give up stick day for something more fun!
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 (edited) Geez...a man who'll give up Stick-Day for his wife is some kind of generous soul indeed. I hope she truly appreciates you. I wouldn't trade getting 7 root canals for spending the day with any of the women I currently know. Edited September 4, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy
High octane Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 The number of contractor (siding/roofing) that have been in the neighborhood this summer trying to get homeowners to have a free(?)inspection, and put in a claim with their insurance company for a new roof and siding. It's getting old.

It's getting old. Yeah, they ran that one into the ground here a couple of summers back after a bad hailstorm. I was about the only guy on the block who declined the "free offer"...and the neighborhood rang with the daylight-to-dawn rattle of nail guns for months afterwards.
