philo426 Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I was at a local car show yesterday and a guy had a nice mint green '65 Chevy hard top.Despite the BB 396 installed,it still had tons of room with almost nothing there!Changing a water pump would be easy and it seemed to have a lot more room than other '60s models.A far cry from all of the stuff the cram into modern engine bays but it is comparing apples to oranges!
bad0210 Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 that's what I loved about the chevy trucks.
Harry P. Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I have a '67 Impala 327. You can see daylight on each side of the engine.
Eshaver Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Indeed, I used to own both a 65 Chevrolet and then a 66 Chevrolet ...............
JunkPile Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 If you can't reach something under there, just climb in....instant access.
philo426 Posted September 23, 2013 Author Posted September 23, 2013 The '66 has the bar type tail lights the '65 has the round Corvette type.Best way to tell them apart!
tbill Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 lol, yes indeed. I had a 65 Biscayne with a small block, plenty of room for another one in there, also had a 66 chevelle with a big block, that was a little tighter, but still plenty of room to move around.
ScaleDale Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Street legal Chevy stocker from the Lucas Oil regionals last August. Amazing how much room is in there when you get all the junk out. Dale
philo426 Posted September 23, 2013 Author Posted September 23, 2013 Yep!Nice to be able to change the plugs easily.
pharoah Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 That's the way all cars should be. Sigh... Not any more.
Harry P. Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Yep!Nice to be able to change the plugs easily. My son used to own a late '90s Z-28. The engine was set back so freakin' far, you literally couldn't see the rear two pairs of spark plugs. To change them, you had to do some major disassembly in the engine compartment... yet there was two feet of empty space beween the front of the engine and the radiator. Worst engineered car I have ever seen. He's grown up and gotten a lot smarter since then... drives a Volvo S60 now.
kobuzz Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I have a '67 Impala 327. You can see daylight on each side of the engine. Pics?
Harry P. Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 The only photo of it that I have right now...
Harry P. Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Nice lookin' drop top. If you knew what kind of MPG it gets, you probably wouldn't think it's so nice!
Harry P. Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 About 25-30 gallons per mile! Not quite that bad... but not much better!
Tom Geiger Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 If you knew what kind of MPG it gets, you probably wouldn't think it's so nice! I had a 1970 Impala coupe. I sold it back when gas was still 50 cents a gallon because I couldn't afford to put gas in it then!
kobuzz Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Very nice! Love the full size Chevys. I had a 67 for a while. it was tons of fun..literally!
Harry P. Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Very nice! Love the full size Chevys. I had a 67 for a while. it was tons of fun..literally! That car is as big as some people's first house...
Art Anderson Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I was at a local car show yesterday and a guy had a nice mint green '65 Chevy hard top.Despite the BB 396 installed,it still had tons of room with almost nothing there!Changing a water pump would be easy and it seemed to have a lot more room than other '60s models.A far cry from all of the stuff the cram into modern engine bays but it is comparing apples to oranges! Of course, it helps when the car in question is nearly 7' wide! Art
philo426 Posted September 24, 2013 Author Posted September 24, 2013 We had a '66 Buick Le Sabre when I was a kid that had a huge trunk! You could put a 26"bike in the trunk and it had a full size spare!
Skydime Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 My son used to own a late '90s Z-28. The engine was set back so freakin' far, you literally couldn't see the rear two pairs of spark plugs. Worst engineered car I have ever seen. He's grown up and gotten a lot smarter since then... drives a Volvo S60 now. Mine had a secondary and useless alternator bracket that took a swap from a 5 minute job to a 45 minute job. As soon as I got it out, tossed it, and put over 160000 more miles on the car without a problem. Loved the car, hated working under the hood.
