MeatMan Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Hey guys, I want to make a grille for my project but I'd like to build one from scratch as I'm approaching my budget limit for this project and don't want to buy too much else. I've looked at screen but think the holes are too big. Any ideas? The attached photo shows where I'm going. I will make cutouts for fog lights and open up the space between them in the piece I put in there. Thanks in advance.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 (edited) I saw a guy once use the screen from an old electric shaver (yard sale $.50) to make a pretty cool grille insert. There's also PE brass screen in various designs and sizes made for model RR applications that's pretty cheap for as much as you get... The holey aluminum perforated material used for lightning protection on composite aircraft structures (like Cirrus and Lancair) has good sized holes and spacing for a model-car grille, so if you live close to an airport where they work on small airplanes, I'm sure they'd give you some scrap. Heck, I'll send you some if you want. Edited September 29, 2013 by Ace-Garageguy
Shardik Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 A couple more good souces for fine screen are tea balls (wire mesh clam shell balls used for preparing loose tea) and permanent coffee filters.
1930fordpickup Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Splatter screens for the frying pan can have smaller holes . It just depends who made it. Check out the discount store for the cheap ones.
blunc Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 I have heard there is really fine screen inside transmission filters...if you can get yer hands on one and open it up...
MeatMan Posted September 29, 2013 Author Posted September 29, 2013 Thanks guys, great ideas/suggestions. I'll widen my search.
