I found these roaming through a hobby shop. For approx. $5 each, I figured I'd give them a try. All I want to do for now is to create a surface to photograph models on.

Here's the black pavement one. Decently convincing as pavement.

The background is too sunny, I usually shoot past the sunny part of the day.

And the Gravel one also works for me.

Adding some vegetation to blur the edge and add some realism.

And some scale characters to make it look real. Okay, maybe not.

And how I did it. I found a sturdy box the right size and just sprayed the finish on it. The paint took over night to dry.

Then I flipped it over and sprayed the other side.

And a carrying case for my photographic sessions.

A bit of improvement over my old method of placing the models on the bench.

That's pretty cool! If I ever finish anything I might have to make one of those!

Note that as existing stocks of the Floquil-branded paint is sold off, these textured diorama paints will eventually become part of the Testors "Create FX" line.

This looks good. The black is better for this truck . That could just be the color of the model .

For something to try, you may try to put a few lines such as a parking lot on one side.

How rough is this stuff ? Could you spray a color over it to make a bed liner ?

I like that asphalt look. I am going to have to find some of this to redo a road surface I tried a bunch of years ago. I wonder where I can find some?

edit: never mind, Google is your friend even if it spies on you!

ive used some rustoleum similar paint but it didn't come out nearly as good looking as illustrated above.

ps: I'm told I look like john lennon a bit. maybe me and you can do a "lost weekend" LA style some time harry!

They look pretty good to me too. Might have to try it.

Thank you for the tip.

What method did you use to create the rust on your build?

Salt?

I use chalks. There is a set called "Earth Tones" that costs less than $10 and will last you a decade. I sand the chalk sticks to make dust. Then I have a two brush method... With brush one, I paint a bit of Testors Dullcote (I spray it into a small bathroom cup) on the intended area. Then with brush two, I dip into the chalks and depending on the effect I desire, I either paint with it, or press it into the dullcote. For instance, on a chassis, I will paint, then press the final details.

See pix at links below... somehow this board wouldn't let me post these (gifs)

I would also like to know if this would look good as a bed liner(rino lining)...or is it too coarse of a texture? Edited by zaina

I'd say it would be too coarse. It's real bumpy.

FYI guy, Hobby Lobby sells the Testors Create FX cans of this stuff in the same isle as all the diorama building supplys. I got a can of the green color, going to try and lay down a really thinned out coat of semi gloss black over it since they didnt have any black at the time.

I was just at Michaels and they had a similar Krylon product. I paid around $5 for the Floquil. The Krylon was $12 for a can about double the size. Use your 40-50% off coupon.

Where is it located at in Michaels? I just might head there tonight.

It was in the aisle with the rest of the spray paints. On the shelf with their other special effects paints. There is a Michaels Coupon for 50% off through today.

So i went to Michaels today and just didnt like the texture of the Krylon stuff, seamed too big for what i wanted it for. I did change my plans on doing an Asphalt driveway, instead im using this and doing a concrete driveway. It was 9.99 a can and i used 40% off coupon. I will try and spray some tonight and post up a picture.
