Mrdarkmonkey96 Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) So I recieved this model from my uncle, who's a day driver for a trucking company. Figured I would go a little custom the first time, and then make one full bore, decked out to the gills. It was definetly a learning experiance. I took some notes on what to fix next time, and Already have Ideas. Also my first time attempting BMF Heres what I came up with.. Hemi Orange model master, wet look clear. The engine is painted with insignia yellow MM with some black mixed in to darken it closer to cat yellow. I admit, I half A**ed the engine, as the model is going to be in a case that is not easily opened... And I also skipped the interior.... no dash no seats, I just flat blacked the tub, and tinted the windows. Oh and the stacks are made from aluminum tubing. Hope the height and miter cut are in scale.. Still need the radiator, and the air cleaners, and the rear lights and KW decals on the mudflaps. As usual, I would truly appreciate the criticism, and input. If something is wrong, point it out please. I try to improve as much as I can. almost be overly critical This picture bugs me to no end. The wheels were awful to get straight. I must have fiddled with them for an hour and a half. on the next build Im either going to make a headache rack to put some hoses, and cover up the parts the cab snaps into, or putty them smooth. Im thinking I should give the wheels a light wash. Thank you for looking! Anthony. Edited January 18, 2014 by Mrdarkmonkey96 1
Mrdarkmonkey96 Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 also to anyone who may view this thread, What aftermarket parts do you reccomend for big rigs? Im looking for headache racks, big cow pusher style bumpers, full fenders, hoses for the trailer, etc etc. anything you use to enhance your models. Im more looking for stuff to improve the realism, not custom stuff so much, except for those full fenders. I think a kenworth would look killer, slammed and full fendered.
Jim B Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) I like it in the Hemi Orange. Looks good. As to your stacks, they can be no more that 13'-6" from the road surface (which in scale is 162mm). Oh, where are your air cleaners? Here is a list of several aftermarket companies: American Industrial Truck Models ( www.aitruckmodels.com/ ) - resin parts (also hosts Illini Replicas) Model Truckin' ( modeltruckin.com/store/ ) - decals (Jerry is a member here & a great guy) Plaskit - resin parts (Daniel doesn't have a Website, but you can email him at plaskit_resin@yahoo.ca) GW Trucks - resin parts (Gary doesn't have a Website, but you can email him at gwtrucks@yahoo.com for a catalog) P&P Resin Works ( www.ppvintagekits.com/ ) - resin parts Model Maker Shop ( www.modelmakershop.com/modelmakershop/index.php?XTCsid=df08c8lr8cf38ov5u7s3a28e41 ) - resin, P/E, decals Kit Form Services ( www.kitformservices.com/ ) - resin, P/E, decals GR Decals ( www.grdecals.com.au/ ) - decals & P/E Auslowe ( www.auslowe.com.au/ ) - resin, decals, P/E Melbourne Model Truck Accessories ( www.freewebs.com/mmtaer/truckparts.htm ) - resin, P/E, decals The Model Car Garage ( www.modelcargarage.com/store/pc/default.asp ) - mostly car stuff, but some P/E & detail items for rigs Scale Modeling by Chris ( www.scalemodelingbychris.com/ ) - mostly car diorama stuff, but some things could be useful Scale Equipment Ltd. o-man Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Looks great to me, but I'm no truck expert. I've got one sitting in a box waiting to be built.
olsbooks Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Well done! Just poke thru alot of the threads in addition to the great list provided above. There are all kinds of little jewels in them. Remember it does not always take big $. Heck, take a hurl into scratchbuilding with plastic. Get a "for sale" sign for a buck and try making a exterior visor. Might take a few times but if you got a hobby knife and a straight edge to measure, mark, and scribe, it is a great place to start. Maybe get a tube of filler putty and try building a simple seamless box which could house a wet tank, aux power unit, or storage box. Low cost of failure and high learning opportunity. Just my opinion... Again, well done. You definately can lay down a coat of paint well and do photography! I'm takin' notes How did you tint the glass? Looks really good. I am wracking my brain on trying to figure out how to do it.....especially want to do red and amber for light lenses for my 1/16 KW W900. Look forward to seeing more! Thanks! the next one for sure will have a visor. Im actually working on a 4x4 drag jeep, with some scratbuilding, to try and get the hang of it right now.. I appreciate the compliments on my amateur painting and photography! I try to BS my way into a half decent final appearence....( I actually took the pictures with my phone!) As for the tint, I just used model master, clear black window tint. I believe tamiya makes a similair product. for a colored tint you could try using duplicolor metal cast... Its a clear paint, thats all this stuff is.... Although I dont know if would craze, some of the duplicolor stuffs pretty hot laquer. Good luck!
Mrdarkmonkey96 Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 Looks great to me, but I'm no truck expert. I've got one sitting in a box waiting to be built. Thanks! Go for it! The kits great! its a fun and easy quick build.. The details not bad either for basically a snap kit, and there are so many ways to customize!!! not to mention its looks pretty sweet if you get a good gloss on it. just be car eful on the rear axles, I broke one of mine, not knowing that onces the wheels snapped on, they dont want to snap off..... the axles do.. I like it, get 'er done! Thanks! Im just waiting for some warm weather to paint the air cleaners.
Mrdarkmonkey96 Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 Looks really good. I like it! Thank you!

Mrdarkmonkey96 Posted January 29, 2014 Author Posted January 29, 2014 Looks good outside. I don't mean to toot my own horn, but yes it sure does. Thank you!

I personally think its the black tint on the windows that really accents everything.
olsbooks Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I agree with Anthony. It is a very sharp and well done paint job but the dark glass really makes it unique. Simply gotta try that. Nice job!

Simply gotta try that. Nice job! Thanks! the real motivation was I didnt feel like masking off the windows and outside to paint the interior, and risk messing up the glassy clear coat, so I said I'll just tint the windows, and not do the interior! (lazy I know) normally I do the interior first, then mask off the windows from the inside, primer paint and clear, but I forgot to this time... but hey, theres always another one.
ap40rocktruck Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 What about the air cleaners? kind of missing??? Ap40
