Old Buckaroo
Howdy Dennis, I like the idea and the work you have done so far. Here is a pic of one I saw this summer. To me it has that old time "Bonneville Salt Flats" look to it.
Obivion
Oh yes i love that one. Especially the roof. Maybe i will try this with the next Volksrod i will build. Dennis
Obivion
Well I give it another try to post the pictures. Hope it works now...
Davewilly
looks very cool!
crazyjim
Now that looks excellent. Is the front end (suspension) too far forward? I like how the wheel wells look sculpted.
Obivion
I don't know if it is too far forward. I just did it like this because i liked the looks. When you look at the black one a few posts back i think then front wheels are a bit more forward than mine. The wheel wells are sculpted. I took the original fenders and cut off the outside. I glued them at the inside on the "wrong" side. So the outside of the left fender is glued on the inside on the right hand side. Then closed the gap with plasicard. It sounds easy but it took me hours to get this. And still it is not ready. Dennis Edited February 21, 2014 by Obivion

crazyjim
Great idea Dennis. I look forward to seeing more progress on your build.
Dave Van
Here is mine I built in 2010. The old Revell worn out kit. Need to build again with a modern kit......
Obivion
Wow Jim, at least your model has an engine in it. My biggest problem is to close the rear wheel wells because there is no engine Oh and still ik must look good... Dennis
crazyrichard
nice !! btw i think if you look at vw engines it would not be hard to scratch a engine that you see from the bottom , more like a plate that resembles the bottom of the vw engine .. they are quit simple in design
Obivion
Richard, the underside of the engine is there already. Only it stops at the lower line of the rear wheel well. That is the reason why i closed the rear wheel wells... Dennis
crazyrichard
oh yes but i thought you where talkingabout when those wells are closed and looking at it from the bottom .. so never mind me then haha
Peter Lombardo
I don't mean to jump on your thread, but since others have posted other VW RODS here, here is a model and a real one in the making, here is a VWROD I did a number of years ago and a VWROD that my son has been building for a few years nowThis rod has a 140HP Corvair engine that will be hanging off the rear end. The top has hundreds of welded pieces in it......You can get an idea from this shot......The car has a full slider roof and will get a 4 inch section to the body and suicide doors......maybe you can get a few ideas from these. Obivion
After a lot af filling and sanding I am almost finished the wheel wells. Now time to do the doors. What do you think? Shall I lift the lower door seams and make suicide doors...? After that time to think about the front and rear lights and put some primer on it... ningoth4
Your 2010 build turned out quite nice! Kevin
crazyrichard
nice job and i would ,eave the door seems , its not uncommon when a body is a bit channneled that when you open the door there is a raised floor .. also when you raise the doorline it might look weird and bulky ...suicide doors could be cool !!i would get rid of those molded hinges and keep the door flat and only put a handle at the front ... no new hinges ?? Obivion
Ok i am leaving the doorlines original. Suicide doors i don't know yet. Indeed Richard, maybe better than to leave the door flat and only have the handle visible at the front side... Dennis
mikelo
Great job so far! I like this style and have plans to build my own. You should see my take on this theme, along with a couple others, coming soon. I am interested to see yours progress. I started with the crappy pink one, so anything will be an improvement. I would say keep the door lines going all the way to the bottom, and if you are going suicide, try looking at the older versions that have the side vents. I think having both of those opening the same will look good. Keep us posted, Mike
Obivion
Mike thank you. So you mean to fill the hotizontal door line and extend the vertical ones all the way down. Hmm maybe that is not bad at all. And good luck with your project... looking forward to follow that one. Dennis
Chromecop
I really like the VW-rod You're building!!! When I built mine, I based it upon the same kit. I kept the stock inner fenders in the rear and stuck an Engine in there from an old IMC 1964 VW.
Obivion
Well, I think the body is ready for the basecoat this weekend. Today I did the following. Removed the doorhinges to make suicide doors. Still not sure if I should make new hinges at the rear side of the doors. I removed also holes for the doorhandles. I filled the lower doorlines and the vertical ones go all the way down now... Dennis
The Moparian
Can't wait to see how this turns out. I've wanted to build one of these for a while

bobthehobbyguy
I would leave the hinges off, they coukd be hidden on the real car. A handle in the front shows they are suicide style. Keep up the good work. bobthehobbyguy
