bobthehobbyguy Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Hard to believe the vette wiring was done by a shop. Would not trust that shop to put air in my tires.
FASTBACK340 Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 gotta love fixing prior 'hack jobs'. I work in a chevy dealership and in the 'good weather' I get the 'old cars' when they come in. it's amazing how messed up some things are after 30-50 years of improper repairs, lol. I'd love to get a job where I could adjust to not working flat-rate I've done the dealer-dance since I was in my late teens. I got an early start with Porsche/Audi and just stayed with it until Infiniti. Granted, when it was "good" I would earn 55-80 hours pay on a 45-50 hour week. Nice money, which was good when I was restoring the `Cuda and putting the house together. I'm approaching retirement in 10 years…. I'm kind of liking the idea of settling in at a slower-paced, quality shop and doing really cool stuff with really cool cars. This job is a big deal for me, this is a NICE place! And as for the "blood money" I'm missing, it's just not there anymore. Those easy-money days are over at the dealer level….. and I'm glad I cashed-in when I did.
tbill Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 ya, I hear ya. still manage 50-80hrs in 40, good weeks are when transmission jobs aren't on my lifts, the powertrain warranty is a flat rate killer I find it funny that by the time you know what you're doing and have bought all the tools to do it all, you're burnt out from it.....plus the constant training.......never ends.....and in the dealer environment it seems the more ya know the worse off ya are. and then throw in some high voltage cars.................[spent a ton of hours doing training for the Volt, and now we don't sell them or service them...go figure...]
FASTBACK340 Posted March 25, 2014 Author Posted March 25, 2014 I had been Hybrid certified by Nissan for both product lines. Never saw ONE come in the shop…. People stayed away (thankfully) in DROVES. And the funny thing is it's Toyota's system! Same system they use in their golf carts, er… I mean "cars". The warranty time for replacing an entire headliner in a G37 convertible is .7. In flat-rate language 7 tenths of an hour, which translates into not quite 45 minutes. The headliner…. In a convertible…. Clean,Clean, CLEAN work, no finger prints as the headliners are beige-ish/white. Loose-Loose….. Takes at least 2 hours to do it right. And yes, the more you know, the worst off you are. Your in Hell everyday while the know-nothings rake in the easy work. I'm done with it. Today I spent all day pulling a radiator out of a Corvette and getting a barn-find Camaro running before it gets dismantled. The Camaro is a `69 Ragtop in the Pace Car colors with the checkered houndstooth interior. I'm not sure if it's a real-deal Pace Car or a replica, but it IS getting a ground-up resto. I'm really liking the new gig. REALLY liking it…..
FASTBACK340 Posted March 29, 2014 Author Posted March 29, 2014 My Wife pointed out a conversation my employer was having with a friend of his about that being "in the works…" on their Facebook page. I hate almost ALL those type of shows. Wouldn't THAT be the irony with this job! I hate to post this, but next Wed. & Thur. they will begin filming a test pilot for a pitch to a network. I found out this past Thursday that my shop came "THIS CLOSE" to landing a show on The Discovery Channel 4 years ago when they were in the midst of restoring the GTO for the Marine that was killed overseas. The shop is getting a second chance and I get hired on three weeks before THIS goes down! We're a large organization with about 20 people on a daily basis and the clientele is top-shelf. And the cars are drop-dead beautiful. Who knows…. …and I really don't like most of those shows.
mikemodeler Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 John, Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad and in this case maybe as the "new guy" you can work in the background while others get their faces in front of the camera! If you are doing re-wire jobs and pulling radiators, that can't be as interesting as some of the other stuff. And if you do end up on camera, at least you are getting paid for it and not losing money like you would if you were still at the dealership!
FASTBACK340 Posted March 29, 2014 Author Posted March 29, 2014 I had asked about that and I was told we are ALL going to be INVOLVED. At first I thought the same thing, I'm the new guy. Instead it looks like it could be "interesting…" to say the least! And as for doing ugly work, I'm the new guy. I understand, but at least I'm not being ridden like a pony. It was waaaaay worst, believe it or not.

Tom Geiger Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) Wow John! You will become one of the main characters in no time! Start growing your Aaron beard now! And then I can tell folks I knew you back when you were a mere mortal! Edited March 29, 2014 by Tom Geiger
1930fordpickup Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Please do not go all Hollywood and stop building the little ones.
mikemodeler Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 When I got this one I thought it was "interesting". John, Straightening out a wiring loom is not as interesting as engine or body work to the cameras. Try to enjoy it and who knows, maybe you will be signing autographs at the NNL East in 2015!
